Well we were going through the “soccer mom” period - and so were most of our friends and family - for almost 20 years.

I don’t know whether that “soccer mom” concept is as widespread as it used to be 40 years ago. In practically all families that we interact with both parents work demanding professional jobs and share the domestic load and this means any of them can be driving kids around in whatever car is better suited for this on any given day. “Dad’s truck” or “mom’s SUV” are just labels, dad will be driving the kid hauler as often as is necessary.

Also, some people stick to leasing and this means a different car every 2-3 years. After a certain age most people are no longer excited to learn a new interface every time.

I agree that I probably travel and use rentals more than an average person. But again, I am trying to explain why CarPlay is inportant to me.
Totally fair point. I do think Rivian is correct that this will be resolved with deep AI integration, but you are correct that it isn’t currently.
CarPlay is just device mirroring, having ai agents with across device context sharing would appear like magic compared to CarPlay. Akin to the difference between an iPhone and blackberry
Even Tesla buckled and is reportedly testing CarPlay.

And the roadster will come out next year and the cyber truck will ford rivers…. I will believe it when I see it

Well there's also such thing as a familiar interface, not uploading all of my contacts and meetings into car manufacturer's grabby little hands, not having them monitor who I call or what locations I go to when I travel, being able to use home automation or add items to a shopping list while driving (when my mom stays with us she can never figure out the thermostat controls so I have to change the temp from another state lol). But yes, at some point I can see AI getting good enough for all of that, although it still doesn't resolve the privacy issues.
And the roadster will come out next year and the cyber truck will ford rivers…. I will believe it when I see it

Well, Tesla is no longer the only game in town. They need to compete against actual competition. Plus, Musk damaged the brand to some extent. Adding CarPlay is one of the things they can do to still have potential customers consider them at the top of their lists.

To some extent you have to believe half of what is in print and none of what is said, sorry to say. But v14 lite was delivered. And Tesla’s sales are stronger than ever. Teslas brand image issues are back to the usual EV nonsense. Actual competition to Tesla is starting to appear, but the price of that competition is still lofty. People still need and want an affordable EV vehicle.

But I think CarPlay will arrive.

Lowest Q1 sales since 2021, third straight year of declines, actually. Hard to say where the bottom will be.

As the EV market contracts, Tesla is cleaning up even with falling sales.

Yep, from April Europe and China are coming back strong. But true to internet debating tactics, nuances in the article were glossed over.
And then this: https://www.notateslaapp.com/news/4389/tesla-smashes-q2-2026-delivery-estimates

I seem to recall someone promising a $25k EV 🤔…who was that?
I hope Tesla pulls their heads out of their rear and makes some new cars. The model 3 and Y sell very well, but they have reached a saturation point. They need new models if they want to continue growth.
FSD is getting better, but Elons insistence that cameras are all it needs is faulty, Waymo is superior in safety and if they start licensing their algorithms to OEMs, what does Tesla have?
Tesla may add CarPlay, but again… until it happens, I wouldn’t count on it.

Does anyone offer a $25K EV? Certainly not rivian.

I dont know check the link in the post above. Not sure they reached any saturation point.

Normally I ask for a citation but a least Tesla’s FSD was not crippled by a little ice storm as was Waymo’s. Terrible.

Can’t say for certain, but at some point I believe CarPlay will arrive. 😀

Yes. A little company called Slate. Rivian took the high end approach that Tesla did so they are at their model3/Y stage. They’ve already hinted that they have a R4 and R5 in the works so you never know. Can’t hit 25k at the volumes Rivian is currently shipping.

I dont know check the link in the post above. Not sure they reached any saturation point.
Have they continued to grow? They had lower profits on cars in 2024 and 2025, the volumes are also lower. Hard to maintain growth when you don’t have anything new.

It’s widely accepted that Waymo has high safety and better autonomous driving. Don’t know where you’ve heard otherwise

Maybe, you think once has CarPlay the floodgates will open and all the people that refuse to buy an ev without CarPlay will suddenly buy a tesla?

Slate is like the Cybertruck was and Roadster is. You can't buy one. Not to mention we do not know Teslas plans for a lower price EV. Tesla got rid of it's halo cars to focus on bigger picture corporate initiatives. That takes guts, my friend. And whether Rivian gets there...who knows?

Tesla had a booming first quarter. I posted the link. If you're worried about margins and profits, don't be.

People claim a lot on MR and yeah so once Tesla offers Carplay I think it will sway some people. Significant? I don't know. Model Y is still the best selling car in the world.

better is subjective
Today Robotaxi launches without supervisors in Miami. Also today, Waymo paused their service seemingly due to the rain.

your article points to Tesla crashing into a fixed object. Yet Waymo crashed into a telephone pole with 5 lidar sensors going at 8MPH. Please explain how lidar is needed in any autonomous vehicle when a production vehicle crashed into something that lidar system was specifically designed to avoid?

Slate is orderable today, people have driven them and they will deliver in 4th quarter. When is Tesla’s ? Oh right Elon backtracked on the $25k Tesla.
Yes they have.

Tesla had a booming second quarter after a sluggish first quarter, and their margins have been shrinking amid the need for them to reduce prices to attract customers
I can come up with far more embarrassing incidents involving Tesla FSD and taxis, what we do know is that mile per mile the Waymos have fewer incidents.

CarPlay is irrelevant to the conversation. That’s my point. Tesla model y doesn’t need CarPlay to be the best selling car in the world. how can that be if everyone demands and requires CarPlay?

Skip to 19:00, he will show the main reason why nobody needs CarPlay for Rivian and Tesla.

someone saying "what we do know is that mile per mile the Waymos have fewer incidents." is false.
Waymo doesn't give non-RO miles data so we have no idea what the mile per mile is.

and if your vision algorithm doesn't accurately detect things, then what? Teslas have done full stops in the middle of the freeway because they thought a shadow was an obstacle. The waymo at least has the data to have contention... tesla has to make decisions without data at all. Cameras also get covered by dust/dirt, sun shines on them etc... the camera is not enough.

I can’t get one. Until the population can get one and get it delivered in a reasonable time frame, it’s vaporware.

Still eating everybody’s lunch. Just admit it they are back.

I don’t need some YouTube video to explain why I may like CarPlay in my next car or why multiple MR posters claim they will get a Tesla when CarPlay is available.

So you are saying it’s better to have an entire fleet incapacitated with lidars and sensors than a one off incident with fsd? Just not seeing the critical thinking there.

ok, but these exist, and people have driven them. they will release this year. meanwhile tesla blew it on the cybertruck instead.

Time will tell.

I don't need to convince you personally. the point is clear. most people just want good maps, good streaming services, some phone integration and they're good. No need for CarPlay. this is at least 90% of all the "I need CarPlay crowd"

I like to see that Waymo is taking safety seriously, rather than telling people FSD is full self driving and killing a bunch of people. Lidar isn't the problem.

It's pretty funny when these manufacturers have to try to explain why carplay ISN'T needed. Goes to show the influence of the product and Apple. To address your points.

1. What do Slate and the Roadster have in common? They are both coming soon.
2. You can interpret the data anyway you want and spin them any which way on this forum, but the numbers are telling.
3. You need to convince the hoards of people who want Carplay and won't buy a car without it.
4. I like to see that Tesla can make a change in the back-end and fix an issue without physically recalling thousands of vehicles. Faster, safer, better.

As far as I am aware no Tesla running FSD v14 has come to a complete stop on the freeway over thinking a shadow was an obstacle. Cars that have other sensors also would have to stop (in city driving) if the cameras are covered because those cameras would be needed to read traffic signs and lights.

That's actually from radar causing false positives.. Which they disabled from the update and that problem is practically gone.

Meanwhile Waymo stopped between traintracks and arm https://www.wavy.com/news/top-stori...hicle-stops-in-between-train-tracks-stop-arm/

Waymo driving along train tracks

1. What do slate truck and the roadster not having in common, The Slate truck exists and people have seen it and driven it. and the roadster apparently is going to have rocket boosters or something?
2. The numbers are mixed at best. Tesla had down quarters 3 out of the last 5. let's not get ahead of yourself.
3. again, thinking you want CarPlay, and realizing that you can have good maps, stream music, and most of the other common CarPlay uses, is easy.
4. as can waymo, its a software issue, and the recall was voluntary for the safety of riders. ie they felt that until the software fix was tested and verified they didn't want to risk anyone's safety.

Its clear that y'all are very pro-Tesla, but the reality is waymo has more driverless hours under its belt than tesla, they also publish more safety data, redact less in incident reports, and are generally more cooperative with regulators and incident investigators. You can recreate the Waymo safety data because they use publicly available data. Elon just pull numbers out of a hat, trust me bro.

don't get me wrong, tesla FSD v14 on the latest hardware seems genuinely great. I can say that when I had my 2021 model 3, newer model 3s and Ys always seemed to work better. FSD for me was always a mess, couldn't get 6 blocks without taking over. friends with multiple teslas have agreed. I'm sure that Telsa will continue to iterate and make great autonomous driving software. But relying on cameras because they're simple, and not having any redundancy is what we call putting all your eggs in one basket. sensor redundancy matters. there will be contention in both ways. but the software and AI will get better.

Think they have more in common than no.

We're not ahead of ourselves. You can interpret the numbers any way you want. Won't change the stock price, profits, expansion, net revenue, etc.
3. again, thinking you want CarPlay, and realizing that you can have good maps, stream music, and most of the other common CarPlay uses, is easy.
Can't insert your opinion for the masses. Only what you think or believe about Carplay. Time will tell if Rivian and GM and others is right or wrong.

It's clear, you are pro-Waymo and don't get me wrong. It's a great system, just not as scalable as easily as FSD(supervised). What was seemingly perfect a lot while ago has started to show chinks in their armor with no amount of sensors helping. Scalability matters and the compute AI that Tesla has invested in will get much, much better much faster imo. Us debating it won’t change the future. We’ll see.

pro-facts actually. you seem to be ignoring it.

They started the project 5-6 years earlier and somehow Tesla is catching up quick.

Waymo only publishes RO miles. Safety data is based on riders riding the car which does not include all the times Waymo crashed without riders.

Elon just pull numbers out of a hat, trust me bro.

Yet, see above.

But relying on cameras because they're simple, and not having any redundancy is what we call putting all your eggs in one basket. sensor redundancy matters.

Literally false again. All cameras overlap. A single camera can fail and the overlapping views take over. That's redundancy.

And sensor redundancy caused Waymo to crash into a telephone pole, something you have yet to respond to.

We can agree to disagree here. Let’s return to the topic at hand.
The fact remains that Tesla has the best selling car in the US. Without CarPlay, they also enjoy one of the highest satisfaction rate with their infotainment system.
So… CarPlay isn’t needed for anyone to be successful, which means it isn’t necessary.

Every time I talk with people who say that lidar isn't an issue and that lidar is needed can't seem to provide any substance when I bring up Waymo's failures that LiDAR is designed to protect against.
