Image retention but quiet even screen

I need advice whether to keep it or exchange it.

my rMini do have image retention but the screen looks even (except for the fact that the left corner of the screen looks liitle bit yellow)

how does my screen look?
Is the bottom part of the screen noticably yellow?

You should find a pure white background if you want to check for this kind of thing.

picture revised!

It looks fine to me. I'm sure some folks will see shadows or tint. The important question is - what do YOU see?

If you use it normally (trust me, you won't be staring at white backgrounds too long) and it doesn't bother YOU, then your fine.

If you see shadows and tints and image retention, and it bothers YOU, then exchange it.

It's hard to see a picture of a screen and make definitive statements. It depends on your camera, lighting, our screens, and our eyeballs. What's most important is what you see with your eyes.

That's my advice. :D

I decided to keep my rMini that displayed retention around 1 minute or so. I thought I'd be bothered by it but it really is a non-factor. For the most part it's a problem that you have to go out of your way to create. If you have a nice, even, non-yellow screen I say hold on to it and don't let go.

If you have OCD, then return, and return, and return, and return, and return, and return, and return, and return, and return, and return, and return.

Will screen retention get worse over time? I keep asking this but no one wants to answer lol.

What? Its not OCD. Screen retention shouldnt be happening on a $420 device. I have it on mine, when i do the test and im debating if i should exchange it when best buy gets more stock in.

What im wondering is why the retention is most noticable when doing the checkerboard test but its never seem outside of that?

Do you have retention only when doing the checkerboard test? Or have you gotten it at other times?

This is why Apple has the generous return policy; to draw them out and get their MR account info.

Because most answers would be guesses. :D

In general yes, it is possible. But these are new technologies and it's hard to say.

If you plan to keep your iPad beyond the warranty period (or AppleCare), it is possible the iPad could fail this or any other number of things. The track record of the iPad is positive, but not perfect. There are no guarantees beyond the warranty period.

I don't think it can get worse. This is image retention, not burn in. It's something many displays have, and for sure they now these have it.
This is not an issue in fairness. Tints, that's the issue. Look for the most even screen you can find (an absolutely perfect even screen is really hard to find given that QC is so bad) and keep it.

As far as image retention goes.... Open up a book in iBooks, black text and white background. Now read at your normal pace and then turn the page when you need to. Does the iPad retain the image of the previous page?

If not, then I bet image retention will not be an issue during normal use.

I was all worried about this for when I get my rMini within the next few weeks. Then I ran the checkerboard test on the iPad 3 I've been using almost daily for a year and a half. It has IR after 3ish minutes and I've never, ever noticed it. Ha! So, this is no big deal at all and I'm not even going to bother with this silly test when I get it.

If you notice it retaining actual screen elements for any app you use, even once, and it legit bothers you, just recreate it at an Apple Store within the next year (or two with AC+) and I'm sure they'll replace it.

Thank you for bringing some common sense to this discussion. :)

I thought I'd post this here, too (in addition to the "yellow tint" thread):

The iPad Mini /w retina I received today has a perfectly even display, but there is the FAINTEST image retention using the IR test page. It's so faint with the extreme IR test that I don't think I'm ever going to see it normal use.

It's a keeper. Serial starts DLXLQ - meaning it was manufactured last week, i.e. it’s from a very fresh batch.

The odd thing is, I ordered it from the online Apple Store on November 22nd, it shipped in two days directly from China, and it arrived today. That’s a day short of ONE WEEK from order to delivery (to Finland). Amazing.

As for the display issues, apparently Apple are using two display technologies with the retina iPad Mini: IGZO (IPS) and a-Si Backplane (FFS). See the specs table at:

http://www.iclarified.com/35866/ret...ent-significantly-outperformed-by-competitors

This could explain why 1) some suffer from uneven screen tint with no image retention, and 2) some have perfectly even screen coloration but show image retention to varying degrees. Luckily, mine has so faint IR that I can live with it, even though I’m quite “OCD” when it comes to display quality.

On another note, compared to my iPad Air, the iPad Mini’s colors are indeed a bit subdued. In all honestly, most people won’t notice it unless they have the iPad Air (or iPad 2/3/4 with better gamut) and Mini side-by-side.

+1

I just did the test with my iPad 3 - and yes, after 5 minutes I had some IR.
Like you, I also did not notice anything in the past 18 months.

It got worse for me on two screens for my iMac, but that was different screen tech, I don't know about these rMini screens.

-------

My rMini suffers with image retention really badly after 5 mins. I'm going to talk to apple support now and ask if I could swap it next year when stocks are more plentiful and possible the kinks are ironed out in production. I'll let you know what (s)he say. ;)

Edit - Shows IR after only 60s

Read the page twice would be a better test, incase you get distracted when reading, but yes, this is a great test for real-world use. :)

So I've spoken to apple support. They would replace the screen if it got worse within the one year warranty. Unfortunately I can't get AppleCare+ because it won't run the diagnostics.

And so now it looks like I need to travel 30 miles to the nearest applestore to get it replace. God damn it.

So you have the diagnostic bug as well? I opened a thread about that. I am still waiting for a solution from Apple support. And changing my device, whose screen seems fine, is not an option for me!

As my screen has bad image retention, I might try risk it.
As for the bug, did you try restore and everything? I don't want to wipe my iPad if that does work.

Mine suffered with the diagnostic bug when trying to set up AppleCare+ when the rMini arrived on Wednesday. Apple customer support were adamant that there was an issue with the iPad, said the only option was to replace. The 'suspect' one is being picked on Monday and the new one (out of china, in transit at the moment) is scheduled for delivery on Monday with AppleCare+ provided by Apple included.

I've been told to go to the store to get apple care, they didn't even suggest it was faulty to me (because of the bug). Looks like you'll be getting a later back mini then. Do rub detol in the wound if it's a perfect screen, won't you. :D

I've run the test for 5 minutes at full brightness. 32 gb, silver, wifi, DLXL and not the single faintest sign of IR.
Even screen tint and no light leak.
Couldn't be happier.

Picture or didn't happen :D I'm curious if you could post a pic in a dark room and a black background with full brightness. I thought there is no rMini without light leak!
