Sharing some more of my observations over the last few days. Returned my F4KL Shanghai week 52. It had the slightest yellow tint over about 3/4th of the screen with about 1/4 of the screen on the right side holding portrait way was the brightest white I've ever seen on an iPad. It was enough of a difference to drive me crazy. It also failed the retention test. The screen surprisingly appeared to have a greater contrast.

Now onto today, I bought a DLXM Foxconn week 6 (February). It has a very, how to say it, creamy white screen, across the entire device. No yellowing anywhere. It also passed the image retention test with flying colors. It has a very subtle light bleeding in the lower left hand corner (portrait) that is hardly noticeable. One thing I've noticed, is that the blacks don't seem as dark as they did on the F4KL iPad. Kinda like the contrast was cranked down a notch.

So what have I learned? I have seen about five or six iPad minis with retina, and more than half have had their issues. Of the three I have had over the past four months, the one I have now is my favorite. People think I'm crazy when I find these little nick picks, but To be honest the iPad is a $500 machine and it shouldn't have any flaws when purchasing one. Some obviously have flaws. So get one that you are going to be happy with.

So get one that you are going to be happy with.

And do not look for flaws, or you will probably find one ;-)

Of all I've read and see, flaws/limitations include:

- Yelow/magenta tint somewhere accross the screen
- Uneven brightness accross the screen
- Image retention
- Dead pixels
- Dust under the screen
- Interlacing
- Washed out colors
- Blue tint on the edge/corner
- light bleeding

And a big % of rMini are impacted by one or other of these imperfections.
You just have to find one you're happy to live with.
Does not search for perfection or you'll come to frustration, exchanging iPad after iPad.

Of all these problems the one I currenly own has only IR, otherwise the screen is beautiful with very even colors/brightness all over the screen and a very solid contrast. Watching movies is a pleasure.
I love my rMini.
IR is nearly not noticable in real life use. You've to search for it.
So I keep it. Anyway, if I exchange, chances I get a same or worst screen are high, so...
Btw, two of my colleagues have rMini with the same kind of screen I've, and both have IR. But they never noticed it (I did the test without telling them).

Just my 2 cents ;)

I have a slight pinkish tint on bottom of the display which was visible on white background and turning on reduce white point with 7.1 really helped a lot. Its almost not noticeable now, much much better than before.

Just wanted to share this, its worth trying on your iPad as well.

It may help... But as the "reduce White point" affect all the screen, it's efficiency will be limited...
Btw iOS 7.1 is a great upgrade !

Got a DLXM production week 6 (February 2014), Foxconn. Strong yellowing around the home button, no IR, sending it back. Will re-try in summer, if I don't get used to not using and needing iPad anymore. :)

I've given up on the Mini and have an Air with an uneven screen. It was the best of a bad bunch but I'm through with iPads - done this dance too many times and my next tablet of this size will be Android.

I'm now on my 5th iPad mini retina 32GB space grey wifi + cellular, and this is the first without any problems.

The others had light bleeding, uneven brightness, yellowing and a screen that wasn't positioned exactly in the middle of the iPad

Can you tell us what letter your serial number starts with?

Looks that you got an iPad with the other screen brand.
This one is nearly perfect (I've one) but it usually suffers of Image Retention.
Did you did the Marco test to check ? Just curious...

If no, don't do it, IR is not visible during 99,9% of real life use: you've to test or search for it...
Just enjoy your Ipad ;-)

I finally received a replacement that I'm content with (my third replacement), it is pretty much uniform across the screen though some small bleeding in the corners that are really not visible during normal use.

Here is the information about the unit:

Nice Name: iPad mini Retina (2nd Gen - ??)

Colour: Space Gray
Production year: 2014
Production week: 6 (February)
Model introduced: 2013
Capacity: 32GB
Memory - flavour: xx
Factory: F4 (China, Shanghai - Pegatron-Protek)

all i know is i walked in to best buy yesterday and saw the New Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4.. from afar the screen instantly caught my attention.. That screen is a BILLION Times better than the ipad minis.. Higher Res, Higher PPI, WAY BRIGHTER, WAY BETTER CONTRAST, and just blows the mini's screen out of the water.. made my mini r screen look like crap. And it was COMPLETELY even!! Say what you want about samsung but they make the best displays.. it sucks apple stopped using them as a source.

I didn't and I wont - exactly due to your point. :)

I have a rmini with a dlxm serial number that has a great display..it is an even white color and no yellowing anywhere...passed the jason dead pixel test too ...it did fail the marco image retention test but thats fine with me cuz i will never notice image retention and i can exchange it for a new rmini towards the end of my 1 year warranty Cuz apple swaps out for ir. But i will prolly keep this one cuz i may get a yellow monster if i exchange ...

+1

same for me, great colors, even screen... ;-) And also: no dust under the screen... ;-)
I've this rMini since 3 monthes and for now IR is a non-issue in real life use...

Btw, IR is not new to iPads (mini and iPad 4 are also strongly affected). It's a limitation of some screen brands.
But on the rMini, you've to search or test for it...

INMHO millions of people use iPads (of various models) with IR and never noticed it (or so briefly they forgot about it).

Ironically, on the rMini, screens with IR seem better in nearly all other aspects...

We probably should use wisdom, stop to search for faults, and just enjoy our iPads !

Just wanted share my experiences on this.

I bought an rMini 128GB Silver cell/wifi in late February. Used it for a few days and checked the forums for another matter and came across this and similar threads. Had not noticed this problem on my iPad before reading this but now I checked it and yes, it had a slight yellowish tint on the bottom of the screen and had more of a cold color scale in the upper half. All this was very subtle but once I've seen I started to get irritated about it... Other than that, there is no book spine effect or almost no back light bleed (even checked it in a pitch black room to be sure).

The other day I visited a few stores and thought I would check out their rMinis. First store had only one rMini and the whole screen was offset, when held in portrait mode there was no thin black border on one side... Hmmm this is not how it should be. I then visited another store where they had three Silver rMinis on display. Two of them had severe back light bleeding from the bottom of the screen. And I really mean SEVERE... It was like there was a ramp of small LEDs lighting up the bottom one-two centimeters of the screen, and this was VERY visible in bright store lighting! They also had bad yellow tinting AND the top of the screen was rather pinkish... Checked the third one they had and that was better than the first two but by no means acceptable.

I guess this is a real lottery and I should consider myself lucky to only have some very minor yellow tinting... I don't know if they put returns on display (this would of course be a really bad decision) but if the failure rate is this high the chance of getting a good (or even acceptable) one is not that high.

Sorry to say but Apple must really have dropped the ball on this one...

They actually still do use them...
