I dove in and sat on my cel for 1.5 hours waiting for Rogers to answer.
Ordered the 16GB Blk.
For you Manitobans out there:
250min - Unlimited 6pm to 7am Eve/Week.ends
= $10.00
yes ten bucks :)
add 6GB ($30) and VV package (I need the 2500 txt option) of $15.
total = $55
not sure all the other fees but it its still lower than my prev.
I was qualifed for hardware upgrade.
maybe that helps lower the cost.

Good luck to everyone out there!

Does anyone have any idea if that would be possible in Ontario??? I'd love to get an iPhone, but I won't be able to afford the 60$ for the plan + 30$ for the data + 15$ for the decent amount of text messages & minutes + 7.45$ for the sytem access & 911 monthly fees. 55$ even before taxes and system access and 911 fees is a possibility for me though. Will appreciate any informaton on this thanks.

If you're already a customer of Rogers', I would suggest calling Retentions. Just tell them you want to cancel and they'll pretty much do everything in their power to get you to stay. That's what I did, and I got a pretty good plan. Not $55 all inclusive, but it's better than what I was getting before.

If you're not a customer, you should call them up and see if they have any promotions. The cheapest plan I can find on the web is $25, so with the $30 data and $15 VVM, you're still looking at $70 + SAF and 911.

Also, Fido might be a bit of a better choice for the perks (per second billing, evenings starting at 7) if you don't need the Rogers coverage.

Edit: the $15 VVM value pack includes 2,500 text msgs. From your post I couldn't tell how much you were looking for, but I'd think that was a decent amount.

I just thought I'd give everyone an update. I. Was second in line this morning to purchase the iPhone. I was able to get the 16gb black version but was not able to activate it in store. However, when I got home it worked effortlessly for me. I called fido to inquire about disabling both 3g and edge accessibiltiy. She had to put me on hold and when she came back she said that they are indeed able to disable it. This means no access to the Internet while I am not connected through wifi and also no unexpected charges for data! I just thought I'd let everyone who is thinking about not gwting a data plan, you can disable all access to the Internet except for wifi. She said it may take a few hours to work so I will check it tonight and let everyone know.

So if you call to get this disabled and they say it's not possible make sure to get them to confirm. It does work!

yes they can, tehy can put a block on your data account, i have this on my 1st gen iPhone, thsi way it only connects when I am getting free wi-fi, which i pretty much always am wherever i am except for work, also when it wanst disabled it would sometimes go into edge even though i had wi-fi at home now that really pissed me off...

[Just out of curiosity, does Rogers charge roaming within Canada or is their whole national network accessible under all Rogers accounts?]
On the postpaid (contract) Rogers service:
When traveling within Canada, you can always place outgoing calls to the local area at the local airtime rate.

The "local area" travels across Canada with you; if you leave your home calling area, then calls back to your home calling area will be charged at long distance rates, and calls to the city in which you're currently located will be treated as local calls.

As soon as you leave your home calling area, though, you are always charged a long distance rate to receive any incoming call.

People calling *you* from within your local calling area are always charged their applicable local rate, even if you travel outside that local area. People calling you from outside your local calling area are always charged their applicable long distance rate, even if you happen to roam into their area.

For example, if you're home calling area is Fredericton and you're visiting Vancouver, then your outgoing calls from your phone to any Vancouver number will be treated as a local call. Your friends back in Fredericton will be charged local rates to call you, but you'll be charged long distance rates to receive their calls. If you call your friends in Fredericton, you'll be charged long distance rates to place the call, but (all other things being equal) they'll be charged their normal local rate (if applicable) to receive the call. Incoming calls from any Vancouver-based phone to your phone, will be charged as a long distance call for both the receiver and the sender.

Also, Fido might be a bit of a better choice for the perks (per second billing, evenings starting at 7) if you don't need the Rogers coverage.

Is this still a concern? I spoke to Fido CS and they said the network coverage is now exactly the same between Fido and Rogers. Their networks are now fully integrated and a Fido customer gets the same, full access the the Rogers network that a Rogers customer does. Both brands have a add-on option for 'extended' Rogers network access, but this provides access to coverage in rural and remote areas and is a separate charge for both brands.

When Rogers first bought Fido, there was a $5 charge for Fido customers to access the Rogers network, which was BS.

Such ********... Ontario has the worst plans in all of Canada... how would I go about getting a plan like that... I have been Pay and Talk with Rogers for about 2 years now.

They are slowly expanding the Fido coverage, but there is still the 25 cents/min or $5/month charge to use the "expanded network" areas. Look up their coverage maps on the Fido website (work block so I cannot link it)

Oh, I was unaware of this. I was under the impression that Fido's coverage was less than that of Rogers'. I didn't know about the rural coverage charge being applicable to both brands. But the per second billing and earlier evenings are still popular features for those with limited minutes wanting to make the most of their plans. If I wasn't already a Rogers customer, I would have gotten the iPhone with Fido just for that alone.

Understood. The question is what is classified as the expanded network. Originally, this meant any area not covered by the original Fido network. But, after Fido and Rogers finished integrating their network, I was told this is no longer the case. The expanded network is now defined as rural coverage and is a billable option (either $5/month or $.25/min) to both
Fido and Rogers customers. Fido CS told me that Fido and Rogers customers now have exactly the same network coverage and the fee to access the extended network applies to both.

Well I believe he was wrong... just look at Rogers coverage maps... no distinction in the "Expanded Coverage Areas" where as on Fido's there is...

We be lucky!
I was a bit scared on friday when I ordered my iPhone over the phone, because I heard rumours of a requirement that there has to be a $30+ voice plan to work with the data plan, but nope, I was able to keep my cheap voice plan and other goodies!

Mine phone has the voice, data plus an oldschool value pack that I dont want to change, unlimited texts for under 7 bucks, 1000 Canadian LD minutes and who knows what else I have, its going to be high 70ish/month, but its still less than what my parents are paying for my spoiled sister's pearl on MTS!

Cool good to know. And they didn't give you any trouble, you were able to sign up for any voice plan without a data plan no problem??

Yes, all was well. Except my voice plan is under 30 dollars a month and so they charged me an additional 50 dollars for the 16 GB iPhone so it came to 349.99

when did they say you'd get your phone? i just called them and they said they couldn't take any more orders over the phone...

I called today for a 16GB phone and they said to call back in a week or two 'cause they're out of stock.

That sucks... I called on Sunday night, waited FOREVER on hold, but ended up ordering one. Got the shipping confirmation today. The only question I have is, where do they ship from? Rogers or Apple? Cause if Rogers... I may get my iPhone TODAY :)

i ordered mine fri. and ups tried to hand it to me yesterday (mon.)
i'm in toronto, and i won't be going for any long walks this afternoon. ;)

very fast.

Very very disappointed

What can I expect, walked into Rogers store today to get some answers ...

With my corporate $25 plan ....

16GB would cost me $350 to start
$25 for my voiceplan which already includes free voicemail and call display
$30 for the 6GB dataplan
$15 for the Visual Voicemail pack.
$7 extra for evenings after 6pm, with the $30 data plan, you cant get the $20VVM plan
6.95 Rip Off fee
0.50 911 Fee

Total of 84.85 a month! Ridiculous.

Could someone explain why having the GPS using the satellite would cut into my data usage. I know that the iphone uses A-GPS. But if I was connected directly to the sat, why is the data plan being used?

Becasue the maps aren't saved on the phone, but it uses Google Maps... hence data
