Just got off the phone with retentions. They had been saying all week to call back today to get the final word on what my options are, as an existing customer. They have absolutely zero permission to waive the cancellation fee. However, if I do pay the cancellation fee, then I will get to apply my Fido dollars ($100) against the taxed price of the phone at the 'regular' price. There was no mention of an activation fee.

I was also told that this might change in a month or so, once they get the launch done and cleared. They said that once the initial rush is over, they will likely revisit their handling of existing customers. He said repeatedly, that he would not recommend that I pay the cancelation penalty right now and instead wait for a month or more and see if anything changes. Unfortunately, he acknowledged that this might mean missing the window for the $30/6GB promo...

i have a 16GB Black.
Lined up at 8:30 am, was 6th in line. I was at the store for more than 2 hours because the rogers activation site was down. Then iTunes registration was down. And I DID choose to upgrade and add the $30 6GB plan. Total cost: 349 + 35 activation fee. But I do get a "$50 rebate" added on to my bill.
Overall, for what its worth, it is.

Ok, I didn't do the iTunes activation (still not working) but my phone works? CONFUSED!!!!

what will your final tally be per month without all the starter fees?
I tried to make sense of it online but if you choose the highest plan you cant do the 6GB option without talking to anyone from Rogers.
Just want to know what it will be at final monthly.

Per month, i have an old Voice plan for $30:
50 + 50 minutes
Unlimited evening & weekend
100 txtmsg
caller id
Plus i added the $30 6GB
Minus $6 (10% VIP Saving)
Plus $6.95
Plus $0.50
= $61.45
+ 13% Tax = $69.44

ordered a white 16gb phone through rogers a couple hours ago. kept my same $35 voice plan (with the voicemail/text/call id package i have) and added the $30 6gb data plan. if i take off the data and go to a lower priced voice plan i have to pay back $50.

what does the $15 visual voicemail package include? if it's texts and caller id like i have a may switch up that part.

i had to pay $450 for the phone but i feel it's fair because i used my hardware upgrade last month for a walkman phone - i knew it could cost me on an iphone but i didn't think they'd be subsidized. oh well.

a more senior level rogers guy told my girlfriend bell opted out of the apple deal because they demanded $700 bucks for each 8gb phone and wouldn't let ANY be sold for more than the $199. on the $30 data plan they wouldn't make their money back on a 3 year contract - rogers just wanted to have the iphone. (plus of course bell would have to invest in 3g technology.

so they just charged me more than steve jobs "list" price - better than refusing me the phone - the guy said my cancellation fee would have been $400.

it's been a fun week seeing this evolve - i wish everything in life were cheaper for me and that others paid me more for stuff but all the "robbers", "ass rape" and "signing your life away" comments seem silly and juvenile to me. lets hope this is the level of stuff we all have to complain about for years to come.

Hey thanks ;) Now how about a brand new user without upgrades and using old plans.

YES please! Someone new to rogers?

Though you can probably do the math yourself!
For an "Ontarion" the cheapest "Rogers" plan would be:
-25$ voice plan
-30$ 6GB Data Promo
-15$ Value Pack (VVM, 2500 text, Caller ID, Who Called)
-6.95$ SAF
-0.50$ 911
-13% tax

= a whooping 87.52$ (70.57$ without the Value Pack)

Well I could not get my iPhone even if I drove about 1h30 because the server was down and he could not get my information in the system. He told me it would take more that 3 hours more before everything was back up and I already had been at the store for 5 hours. He kept my number and told me he would call me on the next iPhone shipment that is expected next week. I was kinda happy but pissed at the same time, first I called them up and asked them is they had one in stock and they kept it for me untill I got there. I got to play with the one they had on display. And when he opened the box, he didn't open it with the iPhone picture up but on the side and the phone fell directly in the concrete floor, the phone had no scratches on it but you never know what might have happenned internally. I told him he could sell the phone he had openned for me and I will be back for the next shipment so I'm gonna get a non dropped phone.

So you used a hardware upgrade last month and they still sold you the phone for $450?

I'm not hardware upgrade eligible since i started a contract 8 months ago. I have been told repeatedly that I can not get it for any price. How did you manage to get it at all, let alone for the reasonable price of $450?

I don't know how he got it... but it's been a year and a half since I got my last upgrade, and I had to pay 350 for my 8GB phone, and when you include the upgrade fee and taxex that becomes $430

I just thought I'd give everyone an update. I. Was second in line this morning to purchase the iPhone. I was able to get the 16gb black version but was not able to activate it in store. However, when I got home it worked effortlessly for me. I called fido to inquire about disabling both 3g and edge accessibiltiy. She had to put me on hold and when she came back she said that they are indeed able to disable it. This means no access to the Internet while I am not connected through wifi and also no unexpected charges for data! I just thought I'd let everyone who is thinking about not gwting a data plan, you can disable all access to the Internet except for wifi. She said it may take a few hours to work so I will check it tonight and let everyone know.

So if you call to get this disabled and they say it's not possible make sure to get them to confirm. It does work!

good question - i don't really know. i had talked to a couple of phone reps this week and last and they said the computer said i was eligible. a sales guy laughed and said no way - so i thought i'd give it a try today.

the price, he said, was computer generated based on my past revenue data. since i have all four rogers services and my monthly bill is quite large i guess it helped.

Cool good to know. And they didn't give you any trouble, you were able to sign up for any voice plan without a data plan no problem??

I would go back or call CS and see if they have a different story. I have been told my multiple CS reps that I could cancel my existing contract, since I am not eligible and the then buy the phone at 'regular' price. I would be adding $200 + tax to the price because of my cancellation penalty. That is Fido though and there seems to be an inconsistency between the two brands..as well as between reps. Your cancellation penalty might be much higher. I think have seen some reports Rogers ECF is as high as $400 + tax.

took the plunge...

I dove in and sat on my cel for 1.5 hours waiting for Rogers to answer.
Ordered the 16GB Blk.
For you Manitobans out there:
250min - Unlimited 6pm to 7am Eve/Week.ends
= $10.00
yes ten bucks :)
add 6GB ($30) and VV package (I need the 2500 txt option) of $15.
total = $55
not sure all the other fees but it its still lower than my prev.
I was qualifed for hardware upgrade.
maybe that helps lower the cost.

Good luck to everyone out there!

How much does the iPhone cost when you are qualified for an upgrade? I'm qualified and thinking about getting one. I'm just wondering if the iPhone plan takes over my current plan or if I can just get the phone with my current plan.

Is there ANY reason to choose Rogers over Fido?

I know that when the smoke clears in a week or two, we will all know what the REAL cost of the plans are and what features are really included, etc. So while I wait for that information to be discovered, I want to resolve the question of whether there is any good reason to choose Rogers over Fido.

My present phone contract with Bell Mobility expires in September [pretty nice timing:D] and my wife and I will likely choose another couples plan. Ideally, I would pick up one or two iPhones with one or two of the 6G $30 specials at end of August [although I expect it will be replaced with a better package by Christmas, but I digress].

The Fido network covers my area sufficiently, and with only a 25 cents per minute charge to access the rest of the Rogers network, I am not too concerned about national network access [Just out of curiosity, does Rogers charge roaming within Canada or is their whole national network accessible under all Rogers accounts?]

So my burning question: is there any good reason to go with Rogers over Fido, or is Fido just allowed to exist in markets until Rogers finally pulls the trigger and closes it down to finish the corporate takeover and destruction of a vulnerable competitor with a superior product?

not a 100% sure but it was a little lower than the 299+35 admin charge.
after sitting on the phone for 1.5 hours my hearing was a little impaired.
I sure hope it was lower and that I am getting the 250 for ten bucks :p

I think Rogers will keep the brand around. It adds to the illusion of competition in the marketplace and gives the a 'discount' brand to match Bell and Telus discount brands, Solo and Koodoo.

form what i've read here the roger's cancellation fees seem way higher than fido.

just talked to a rep today - wanted to change my old voicemail, caller id, text package ($12) to the visual voicemail package ($15). he said i couldn't because that was only for the iphone plans (i kept my old plan and added the $30/6gb plan). he said to add vvm and caller id ($8 + $4) and texts would only be data on the iphone. is this true? no text plan is needed, just data?

if you don't have a data plan and send a text you are charged data rates? thanks.

also, i think the eligibility rules are being applied differently for rogers and fido.

make sure to talk to customer relations, retentions or the iphone dept.

texting has nothign to do with your data plan, data is one thing text messages is another.
