ROFL!

Three years? The way things are going soon buying a mobile phone will be as big a commitment as signing a mortgage.

Three years is pretty much par for the course in Canada. I just finished a three year contract. And as much as I like the iPhone, I won't be getting into another one. I worked out my actual usage vs different plans over six phone bills, and I'll save $25 a month with a virgin mobile. See ya, Rogers! And Bell can jog on too.

They won't understand though, they still can't figure out where I'm getting my tv signal from. Every three months or so, I have to explain rabbit ears to a Rogers rep!

3 year service agreement?!...what?!...are they having a laugh?

I can barely stomach 18 months, in fact i cant, which is why i'm on a sim only tariff.

3 years...No freaking way!!!

I'd rather mail letters and send telegraphs.

While I was ok with people in the forums realizing our shame (that being ridiculous cell phone rates/terms & conditions) now that it has been posted on the front page it is more embarrassing.... look at all of the people who are completely shocked by a 3 year contract! If these data rates are true I'd sign a 5 year contract with Rogers if I had to... that should show some people how desperate we are for competitive pricing.

When I started my last three year contract I didn't even realize that it was unusual. I know more now.

Three years is an absolute joke! I simply cannot understand why Apple would want to give an exclusivity deal to a carrier who will tie it's customers in like that. Nor can I understand anyone who'd agree to such a long contract, but that's just my opinion.

THREE YEARS MAN!!!

Ridiculous!

Maybe it's not an exclusive deal. It's just... there's no one else.

I'll be signing with either Rogers or Fido [same animal, different nomenclature] because there is no other choice, and nor do I see one on the immediate horizon. The wireless auction shows no signs of an new national GSM provider. So if I sign to a 3 year contract, and there's no other way to go for 1.5 to 2 of those years, then the period where I'm really locked in [in a contract but there are other carriers] is less.

Someone remind me again how and why the CRTC allowed Rogers to buy up Fido?

Remember when it was Rogers AT&T? I heard AT&T left out of frustration because of CRTC's foreign ownership rules prohibiting foreign companies from buying up Canadian telecoms. But they let Rogers get away with murder! Let all the American telecoms come back and we'll see how smart Rogers management really are.

Three years is unbelievably harsh! You need to hope they offer good upgrade deals as most mobile phones just don't last that long (at least mine never do).

Is three years typical in Canada?

Yes, and apparently the telco's wanted 4yr plans!!
I couldnt believe it when i first came here.. people just take it as is.. Joe Average think its the norm here, and wont look at new phones until their contract runs out. Each to their own

This thread is hillarious. All the Canadians are OVERJOYED that this is even a possibility in Canada, and everyone outside Canada is saying how horrible this is! Nobody seems to know just how bad we have it (cell phone wise) in Canada. This will be the greatest news in the history of our cell phone networks if it turns out to be true.

3 year contracts and $10,000 - $15,000 monthly bills for iPhone users are not uncommon here. $30 for unlimited data would make me VERY happy!

$30 data + voice plan == too expensive.

I foresee either:

- smaller than expected sales OR /AND
- large amount of unlocking

I'm still in disbelief that CRTC thought it was be good for Rogers to have a country-wide GSM monopoly! Just unbelievable.

$30 data + voice is the absolute BEST CASE SCENARIO! Anyone who was expecting it to be cheaper than the US plan is nuts considering Canada's history of having the most expensive cell plans in the world.

THoughts.

Hmm .... from that supposed data sheet.

1.6Mbps is NOT the cealing of Rogers Data. I know because my SE K850i branded by Rogers peaked over 2.2Mbps avg of 4 times. Its' ceiling is 3.6Mbps to 7.2Mbps ... surely data cards can take advantage of close to the outer peak.

Also it seems that ONLY the data pricing is modeled specifically to the Iphone!

UNTIL Rogers unrestricts grey market phone users from enjoying such data rates in line with the rest of providers in North America (Bell, Telus, AT&T, West, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile) etc then there is NOTHING to sing praise on this. Too many Canadian "analysts" (call them anal listers), or news article writers keep saying Rogers pricing model is perfect. Yet its NOT.

@Stella, I'm so with you on that! CRTC's decision to allow Rogers to purchase Fido and not Telus or another provider within the country was a BAD decision for all of us.

Present data rates are so restrictive. I jumped on getting the SE K850i 1st 30 days it was offered and immediately got the Vision plan ($7/mth) On Device (Subsized by Rogers ONLY restriction ) to fully enjoy it. Then they launched the Nokia N95-4 (8GB) and that was a great offer; yet expensive. Many functions that the end user SHOULD be able to dial that is the core of a GSM network: Rogers removed. I'm seriously peeved about that because I had specific dialing sequencies for routing calls to a voice mail (based on criteria), find out the original number a user is calling from (regardless if it was forwarded to another number B4 calling ur cell).

So is it possible to just buy the iPhone itself and pay something like $400 as oppose to the $199 + the plan?????

nice to hear that they might be dropping their ridiculously high prices... but $30 is still too much for what i'd want to pay!

I personally just want to use a voice plan with the iphone. The reason I don't want the current gen iphone is that in case somethin happens to my iphone, either Rogers or Apple can cover it here in Canada. Really, 3G and GPS are bonuses, but not much else :)

Anyways, I googled DECF (Data Early Cancellation Fee) for rogers, and came up with this:

http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=9631782&postcount=1

So potentially, you could sign onto your 3 year voice+data...pay for a month, then cancel your data plan for a maximum of $100. Wouldn't this be a solution for those in my boat, or just prefer not to have data plans?

Note: SInce this 30/mo data plan is new, the DECF might be more. So we should just wait and see. Still though, @ 200 DECF, I'd still go for it.

Yes, in Canadian terms its good. However, this package over 3 years - very very expensive.

A data option for half the price for say, 100MB would be very good value, in place of the 'eat all you can' $30 rumoured price. Yes, I can dream!

My Canadian friend is visiting me in NYC now, and when he told me the typical rates that Rogers charges, I just didn't believe him! I thought NO WAY could any phone company charge that much -- that it was impossible!

Damn -- I guess I shouldn't have called him a big ol' liar. :(
Still, he'll be very happy to hear this news!

Agreed.

You don't know a lot about the world, do you. We DON'T have it bad in Canada with regards to mobile phone rates. We never did. We always had poor data plans though, but that's true outside of only select countries. Our high prices for internet access is on par with most other countries. It's unfortunate, since that's the biggest reason to buy an iPhone. However, prices are bound to drop.

3 years sounds long but in reality but don't forget the phone companies do build in the upgrade cycles as well.

For your normal consumer, you can flip to a new phone (on a new contract) generally 1.5~2 years into your contract.

If you have a good relationship with a corporate rep, you can upgrade to a new phone even after 1 year with minimal hassle (also with a new contract).

So 3 years doesn't necessarily lock into the same hardware for 3 years, just the carrier.

Also, they do allow flipping between plans during the contract period as well.

Agreed.

somewhat agreed.

now the only thing im concerned about is that im not eligible for an upgrade and no other pricing. i dont mind signin on for another 3 years, but if there isnt a price i can pay they won't give me the iphone? thats ridiculous cuz i dont mind paying an extra $100 or $200 + contract. still frustrated and waiting to see what happens as we get closer to launch.

I currently use an iPhone on Rogers with no data plan (100$ for 200MB/month for consumers, or 100$ for 3GB to 5GB for enterprise on a 3 yrs contract, no thx) and the 30$ would be incredible... as long as it's not this "unlimited" or their "100$ for unlimited" which was capped to 25MB (yes, MB) from 2 years ago.

While it is nearly identical to the AT&T copy, it doesn't necessarily mean its fake.

arn

Exactly. Remember when all those carriers announced that they would be carrying the iPhone "later this year"? You think they, all 10-20ish carriers, coincidentally chose to use the same phrase? No -- Apple is working behind the scenes to standardize iPhone information, as could be happening here.

Sorry, I lumped "data rates" in with "cell phone plans" considering we're talking about the iPhone here, hardly means I don't know a lot about the world.
