... I simply point them to Snow Leopard Server and in some cases assist them in obtaining it...

At least we agree that snow leopard server is better. It's easier to install as a vm than snow leopard, it doesn't have the "suspend" problem - and it has a few extra cool apps that are not in snow leopard. And as you pointed out, it is much cheaper thesedays.

Hi, I'm looking for your advice based on your experiences using Snow Leopard (or server) in a virtual machine, which one works faster to leverage a Late 2013 iMac running Mavericks:
1) Parallels
2) VM Fusion
3) VirtualBox
What versions do you use?

Thanks

VMware Fusion is better overall, in my opinion, because it's got more enterprise-oriented features and provides more raw computing power.

When virtualizing OS X, VMware is far better than Parallels (interaction between guest and host).

Very interesting and wordy thread. After reading trough most of the legal vs. illegal use arguments, I've got to agree with Michael's assessments. Since the EULA doesn't explicitly or even vaguely discourage using SL in a VM, no agreements are violated by such use, provided the user meets the other prerequisites (legally obtained copy running on Apple machine).

Just my 2¢ that no one asked for... :D

Thanks jychua95 and Fangio for your comments.

Scan I get the iMac full screen resolution for the guest under VM ware Fusion?

Ironically, I have now discovered that this thread starter followed me over to this forum while he was on suspension from the Apple Support Communities to give himself a nickname and start this topic specifically to lure my advice and then continue his unfounded attacks on me from the other forum!

It takes all kinds! ;)

About this step:
"Step 5: Parallels should now commence the process of installing Snow Leopard Server into a file that will be named Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server.pvm and will be located at ~/Documents/Parallels/. This process will take up to five or ten minutes."

Does it stay in the Gray Apple Logo screen for the 5-10 minutes?
How big is the .pvm file?

In my initial attempt I am stuck at this step and more than 15 minutes had passed already. The .pvm file is only 42.2MB?

It seems frozen to me. Please advise. Thanks!

I started testing with Fusion and the installation was fine. However I am not able to run old games that require 256 colors and screen resolutions of 640x480 and 800x600. Have any of you faced situations like this? How have you fixed them?

I'm now installing Parallels and going to try VirtualBox too.

The video display settings for these configurations are my main concern.

OS X hasn't supported 256 colors and 640x480 in a long time. This isn't really a limitation of Fusion or Parallels.
Edit: have you installed Parallels Tools and VMWare tools on each respective platform?

I did for Fusion. I am still installing Parallels.
Snow Leopard handled it pretty well in my Late 2008 MBP.

Finished installing Parallels, and the Parallels Tools and the first round of Mac OS X updates. And now the Display resolution options are plenty including the ones of my interest!

Now I am installing the games to test them.

Well Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds doesn't work yet:
This is the error message I get.
How can I change the quantity of colors?

Well so far none of the 3 games I wanted to play work in Parallels.

Are any of you using Snow Leopard Server to run old games?

This is really a Parallels issue and should be addressed to then on their support forum. Let us know if they resolve it for you.

What is the name of the other game that does not work?

In general, I do warn gamers that use of Snow Leopard in virtualization in an attempt to regain access to Rosetta is often not successful for games. But always worth a try! :)

It would be great if it can be fixed.
So far I can't play any of these:
Star Wars Galactic Battleground
Star Wars Battlefront
Lord of the Rings Return of the King
