What Does "won't be visible on Intel machines in March" Mean?

I have this gut feeling Apple is holding back on features not implemented yet on purpose.Just like they held back on OS X running on Intel.

If Apple were to release some of those "secret" features to developers now Microsoft would have it too and possibly add similar features at the last minute.
I also believe Apple and Microsoft are working together on some stuff.

Vista Jan 30th
Leopard shown at MWSF and released in March.

Rosetta won't be visible on Intel machines in March.
I agree. But I don't understand the last sentence. Would you please elaborate on what you mean by "won't be visible on Intel machines in March"? You mean new machines released then or the '06 crop vis-a-vis ultra fast Rosetta inside Leopard? Or something else?

Macworld reports that based on their benchmarks, Apple's Rosetta PowerPC emulation technology for Intel Macs has seen up to 30% improvements in the latest version of Mac OS X (10.4.8). Rosetta is the technology that allows Intel Macs to run PowerPC applications (such as Photoshop and Microsoft Office) which have not yet been released as Universal Binaries.

Apple released the Mac OS X 10.4.8 update on September 29th, 2006 and incorporated a number of improvements.

Meanwhile, Apple is continuing work on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and provided developers with a new seed today (Build 9A303). This latest Leopard build provides ongoing performance improvements and bug fixes, but continues to have a long list of known issues.

While Leopard is officially expected to be released in Spring of 2007, there has been some questionable speculation that Apple may be targeting an earlier release. Apple's Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) release will certainly draw comparisons with Microsoft's upcoming Windows Vista release. According to the BBC, Vista will be available to retail customers on January 30th, 2007, while corporate customers will be able to get the newest version of Windows starting on November 30th, 2006.
How much closer does that 30% get us to PPC apps running on a C2D as fast as a G5?

I love how MS managed to maximize their publicity by setting two major release dates... Corporations aren't going to deploy Vista in November, they're going to start trials on it, which is what my company would call "Beta".

I hope Apple doesn't hurry up the Leopard release just because of the Vista timeline. A hurry up release is sure to drop features or sacrifice stability. Apple can set their own schedule here-- they've already shown they can deliver much more reliably than MS has managed.

With Vista going to computer manufacturers now, I highly doubt that it will be pushed all the way into the summer. Although it is Microsoft, and this IS Vista, but I still don't think it would happen. MS would release it anyway and a crapload of updates following if necessary.

I think Leopard is farther away than many speculate. If Apple really wanted to release it right in January, you would think they would want a bigger hoopla to build the hype, which would have to happen almost immediately. Even then, you would think as neared completion we probably would have gotten a rumor or leak concerning the supposed top secret features by now. While I have nothing but gut feeling to go on, I think it'll be *really* previewed at MacWorld with a release, maybe March or April, possibly into May.

And that would make more sense. Let Vista's dust settle, let the bitching commence, maybe even a couple highly publicized virus or spyware incidents, then swoop in with Leopard, showing that even after MS had 5 years of development to rip off OSX, Apple is still ahead of them. That would give time for hype, and give Apple the press coverage. Not only is it likely, it makes sense.

For Summer read Winter in the US and for Autumn read Spring in the US.

2GHz G5 iMac Has Only One Core = 2.16GHz x 2 C2D Cores

Macworlds photoshop test put a 2.16 Ghz iMac Core 2 as equal to a 2Ghz iMac G5, which is pretty impressive.
Not in light of the fact the G5 is only one core while the iMacIntel has two. :( Seems to me like it's more impressive one 2GHz G5 core holds it's own up against two C2D cores running faster.

But I agree it's better to have two cores than one no matter what. (Buying 8 ASAP in a Mac Pro). I'm kind of a core HOG. :) Make that AM A Core Hog. :p :D

C2D MacBook Ain't Changin' 'Til Way Past Leopard's Release

Darn guys, do you think it would be smarter for me to buy my core 2 duo macbook after the leopard release?
Only if you're gonna wait for the first hardware refresh after Leopard is out, unless $129 is gonna ruin your life then if you buy this hardware now.

i.e. the MacBook C2D hardware is not going to change before Leopard is released next Spring. I think it's highly likely the next MacBook refresh will be several months beyond Leopard's release. Ability to engineer and deploy Santa Rosa improvements won't be possible before late June-July '07.

So unless you are so miserly that you can't afford another $129 then, I think you should buy it in January so you can save another $79 on iLife '07. :)

anyone know where a list of known leopard issues can be found?

They are included in the seed notes. If you have legal access to the seeds you will have access to the issues. This list is covered by an NDA so should not be publicly discussed or posted.

I'll be looking forward to Leopard whenever it does come out, but I'm going to the Apple Store today to pick up a new MacBook. My G4 400 Powerbook  is on its last legs.

(of course there is also a possibility of walking out of the store with a MacPro, MacBook Pro, & iPod (Shuffle, Nano (every color), Video).
Damn Credit Cards!:D ;)

I would be surprised to see 10.5 before spring 07.

Is that northern hemisphere spring or southern hemisphere spring? :p

I don't actually expect it before March '07 either. All this "announce in Jan to steal Vista's thunder" nonsense is simply wishful thinking. Vista has no real thunder to steal, anyway. I don't think you see throngs of people lining up the night before outside of CompUSA stores to buy that thing. Microsoft will make its share of money off it, to be sure, but it won't be the event that say Windows 95 was.

Rosetta improvements:
I cannot believe how well Rosetta handles Photoshop and Illustrator CS2 on these new Core 2 Duos. My buddy brought his new 20" iMac over Sunday night so I could show him some little maintance tips and so I could show him how to partition the drive out. (His first Mac ever! I was so proud of him, almost like seeing your son grow up and become a man:D ) We put his Adobe CS1 on and tried it out.... Holy Cow his CS1 was almost as fast as my CS2 on my Dual Core 2.0 GHz PM G5!!!! This has come a looooong way in such a short time period. Also, I have tried out the Quad MacPros at the Apple Store with Photoshop and they run just as fast as my PM G5. I can't wait to see what happens when Adobe CS3 is UB.

As for Office....... what in the hell are people bitching about the Rosetta performance for???? It's Office people. I have not noticed hardly ANY difference in running Word and Excel on my MacBook compared to the PM G5.
Maybe I'm not concidered a "power Office user", but it runs as I would expect a Microsoft app to run.

Leopard Release:
I don't think Apple will push the release up at all. Apple never follows the intentions of others, if they did the 8 Core Mac Pro would be out already.

But I already know what is going to happen, Vista will come out with it's iLife-clone and reviews will rave about how great these new features are and we, who have been using iLife apps for over 5 years will be relegated to a footnote in the news pieces.

I'm glad that the "Get a Mac" ads have been out for the last year. It gives us some credit in the world. I love the Office commercial, how the PC is surprised that we can run Office. That is soooooo true in the business world. No one realizes that Office was actually created and ran on a Mac years before Windows even came out.

My guess is .5 will be released when they are good a ready. Vista will be sucking the air out of the room for a couple months so Leopard would be lost in the heavy panting.

I don't know what .5 will bring (other then the announced features) but with all the work Apple did to get it on Intel I wouldn't be surprised to see a portable version of the OS on a cell phone (with all the pertinent apps) or ipod like device as well as portable home folders.

Anyone else remember when w95 was released? It took MS almost a year to start generating real sales. Most of that was due to the learning curve of the interface fears. Vista is a much larger leap GUI-wise and the new Office is even a larger jump. It is going to take a few months maybe a year before we see large Vista sales...prime time to convert people to something else.

I think it's pretty damn impressive considering it's emulated.

Not even sure how much benefit the second core confers in an application like office anyway. What it means is that the top of the range mac now available runs the application as well as the same place/priced machine from 1 year ago, make of that what you will.
