I love the fact Apple made this Mac Pro. I just wish they had a cheaper entry level option at $3/4K price with 1TB/64GB RAM.
The prices are just too insane high.
The display is incredible, but $7k with stand and nano tech is ridiculous. They could have an option @ 5K display at $2500 with stand/nano.

Around $13k to get a MP/Display combo is not a feasible option for most Pro's.

Agreed. They really overshot the entry price point. After years of waiting, struggling pros are left with non-ungradable iMacs.

While it is a nice machine, it looks like Apple conceded an important segment
of the pro market to Intel/Linux boxes loaded with NVIDIA GPUs. Given the growing
importance and popularity of Deep Learning, Machine Learning, and Data Science
in academia along with the growing number of people being trained in these topics,
Apple is alienating these people based on price as well as the choice to go with
AMD GPU module.

For half the price, I could outfit a pretty crazy high powered Linux workstation with
NVIDIA's top of the line GPU.

I understand their goal, but they are missing the mark on the $4K-$6K complete (including monitor)
market. Remember the aforementioned Deep Learning, Machine Learning, and Data Science
people currently training and or in school will make decisions on machines to buy when in
the industry. It appears Apple may lose out on this market.

$11K-$12K is too rich for this market.

Are they going after the large corporate pro market and abandoning the small shop?

It wouldn't seem this would be correct. This is a Core/Xeon comparison, and it looks like Intel is just charging quite a bit more for the Xeon without a clear reason.

After subjecting myself to Linus for almost ten minutes, he never did say anything about the Ryzen being better than the Xeon W, just mentioned ram limits. I’m not saying you don’t have a nice system, it’s just not a fair comparison.

Those black cheese graders are at least $1500 less than the new MacPro. Is the Apexx S4 comparable to an entry level Mac Pro?

Unless I land some intense music or video work, I can't say I need one. Kinda makes me want to land some intense music or video work! IMO they really overshot the entry price point. After years of waiting, struggling pros are left with non-ungradable iMacs.

It would have to be extremely intense to warrant the Mac Pro. Overkill for me as the iMac pro is all I need.
I will also add that if I was in the market I still wouldn’t buy it as it is phenomenally ugly.

I thought I was a pro user and could justify a Mac and Apple monitor towards the 10k mark. I would expect to get a decent amount of RAM, 1TB of SSD storage, and a good graphics card and a monitor to match...

Well no, not even close. 10K will only get you the Mac with those specs, maybe. Then you gotta pay another $6K for an Apple branded high end screen. Granted it’s specs are amazing, but it’s ridiculous for real world use.

Apple has f-n lost their damn marbles. As a creative professional I can’t even get health insurance at a decent cost. Do you really expect me to spend the equivalent of a Camry with options on your rework of a decades old cheese grater Mac Pro? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful cheese grater, but you are f-n out of touch with reality.

Once again, an outrageous price for a “premium” product. Not sure why the frickin’ display needs to be so damn expensive. I’m sure it’ll be nice to look at in the apple store.
The 23-inch Apple Cinema HD Display from 2008 and which I am using today was priced at $800 then.
The Mac Pro cost $3,200. Then there were taxes, AppleCare, shipping …

Pricing for this Mac Pro is okay.
It's using a server grade board with loads of expansion options, which alone would run you about $2500.

The issue with it is that it makes the base model completely unreasonable. Nobody in their right mind would run an 8 core with 580 graphics on something like this. This board is designed for the high end versions with 20+ cores, 512+ GB of RAM and multiple PCIe cards installed. Just look at the 1400W PSU to get the picture, the base model would work with a 500W PSU.

If you actually think about buying the base model, you should consider if you a) really need macOS and b) really can't just buy an iMac or iMac Pro.

I have no possible reason to own such a machine, nor could I really afford it. But I sure do want it anyway.

I don’t think Apple dropped the ball on this new Mac Pro, I think they dropped the ball on the mid range. They need a mid range desktop tower that has expansion capabilities beyond thunderbolt 3. A mid tower with BTO options of i5, i7 and i9 and just a couple PCI slots starting at $1599 or even $1999 would be perfect. They have done it in the past with the B&W PowerMac G3.

People say it's ugly, but ya gotta expect we'll soon see other makers of desktops and peripherals offer similar "lattice" designs. Personally, it first struck me as rather odd, but it's growing on me. Definitely has a striking look. Using the outer case of the MacPro and new display as a heat sink seems a pretty efficient use of materials and weight. At least it's a move back to function over form, whereas the trashcan Mac seemed the opposite.

If available in SpaceGrey it would look professional and the lattice design would compliment it, rather than look like a grater.

What a STUPID product. Apple is BLEEDING actual prosumers, and working pro marketshare. This is a product for people who have much more money and will be stuff they don't actually need. Anyone who is a pro and is busy MAKING money, will not WASTE their hard earned money on such an overpriced product.

Apple needs to focus on the MIDDLE market, where the real pros live, where the small pro photographers, music producers, video editors, movie makers are, not making their product like be either expensive but low powered laptops for lawyers, or $10,000 monsters for the guys who have their own personal jets, to purchase one of these just to surf the web.

Once again, Apple is a dead company walking and the Mac world is on it's death bed because Apple can't produce a decent product line. They should have a mini-tower by now for the pro-sumer market but they are total idiots.

AN iMac Pro gives you a xeon 8-core, 32 gigs of RAM, a fast gpu and 1TB SSD and a 5k display for $5k.

The new Mac Pro gives you LESS and WITHOUT the display for $5999...

Apple's gone insane and arrogant. What a disappointment for the pro users

====================

No, their pricing is fully aligned with competing workstations from Dell and HP, even a bit on the cheap side in fact.

The problem is that Apple had never attempted till date to address high end computers, contrary to what many Apple users seem to be thinking. Apple had only been targetting mid range. Now they come up with a real high end offering, and people realize that they have been completely ignorant of the existence of the high end workstation segment, where prices of 30,000~50,000 US$ for a desktop are totally normal.

It's a bit like Canon 5DIII users discovering the existence of Phaseone or Hasselblad, or Sigma users coming accross Zeiss cine lenses... ;)

Back on the pro, what I find annoying is the lack of USB 3.0 ports, but I have zero issues with the pricing, regardless of whether I can afford it or not. The base price is normal.

Cheers,
Bernard

If you need, for whatever reason, a cheap configurable desktop, then Apple has nothing in store for you I am afraid.

On the other hand an iMac or an iMac pro will cover many needs for a majority of creative pros.

The people who need the kind of power delivered by the Mac Pro are the high end video guys and all the engineering applications... oops... I had forgotten that most don't have a mac version... :)

This screen should be ignored all together. It is only targeting 0.1% of the super high end video market. There are much better and cheaper alternatives for the remaining 99.9% of creative pros. Apple literally doesn't want us to buy that screen. The price of the stand is a very clear message from them.... well... it's probably the same for the pro btw.

Bernard

Damn that's ugly. That's some real Dell and Microsoft quality design there. Look at those feet.

I literally exclaimed in disgust when I saw this. Apple has really lost it’s touch...in more ways than one.

Well, this machine is designed to be hidden below a desk, or in rack mounts at the back of a studio.

I personally like the industrial design, but I think that less than 0.1% of potential buyers will see their purchasing decision impacted by styling. It's simply irrelevant.

I don't see much talk about the Apple Afterburner, but it's the most interesting thing here. I wonder who will use it. CPUs aren't getting much faster anymore, so people are turning to specialized processors (aka "accelerators," bad term IMO).

My hunch is Apple has the advantage here. PC makers have long clung to the "x86 + RAM + Windows/Linux" stack, while I think Apple has made more careful decisions and restricted everything in a way that should make these new processors more effective for non-specialized users.

The old Mac Pros (2006-2012) were sorta that option if you're ok buying used, but not for much longer it seems.

So wait let me get this straight.

A $6000 workstation computer WITH NO HARD DRIVE OR OPTICAL BAYS?!?!

WHAT. THE. ACTUAL. FJEISIDHCHCHKA

And a max of 4tb SSD?

My 2009 Mac Pro has 24 TB of HDD and two BDRWs inside it right now. What the hell am
I supposed to do with all that? Spend ANOTHER $2000 for some ugly third-party expansion chassis? The whole point of getting my Mac Pro originally is that I HATE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES.

And after waiting YEARS for the replacement... THEY GIVE US THIS CRAP?!?!

I’m going to commit suicide now. Bye

Very impressive. About the only limitation I saw (and probably the reason it appears a little smaller than the old cheese grater) is it doesn't have support / space for Hard Drives (4TB in SSD's is the largest internal configurable option it looks like - gotta guess that would be an eye watering price).

According to the specifications, the dimensions of the new Mac Pro are almost exactly the same as the cMP. The reason is appears a little smaller than the old cheese grater is because it's sitting beside a 32" monitor.

Its gorgeous but I wonder how many of these they will actually sell? So many power users gave on Apple a while ago. Not sure if they will ever return.
I was indirectly connected to a lot of creative pros when I lived in LA near Hollywood. I heard the industry switched to Windows cause Macs didn't cut it anymore and moved to the US state of Georgia for lower costs/taxes, LOL. Indeed, if you watch the end credits of big movies nowadays, you see the Georgia peach at the end.
