$11,000 to buy in. Ouch. Knowing these systems are going to be sold out for a while, maybe it's time to buy some Apple stock.
I wouldn't if I were you. The stock started going down hard during that keynote, especially when the Mac Pro price was announced. Investors know it's ridiculously overpriced. I think Apple might've gone too far off the deep end with pricing this time. The base model configured at $5999 is insanely, ridiculously overpriced. I have many friends in the tech world who could easily afford this, as could I, and none of us would touch it for fear of ridicule at this point - that's how crazy it is. Apple thinks they can price anything and have great PR but those days are coming to an end, I'm afraid.

Yes the 2%, because at those prices actually, only the rich 1% will be able to afford it.
Especially the 1,000 monitor stand. What an obscene joke.

Pffftt pocket change for some people I know who will recoup that cost with one job. This is for professionals who do high end work.

Plus as a client is if you walk into their offices to negotiate a deal and you notice all the staff have $1000 monitor stands, you know you are going to be screwed if you give them a contract. Good heads up I reckon.

AN iMac Pro gives you a xeon 8-core, 32 gigs of RAM, a fast gpu and 1TB SSD and a 5k display for $5k.

The new Mac Pro gives you LESS and WITHOUT the display for $5999...

Apple's gone insane and arrogant. What a disappointment for the pro users

====================

Is the iMac pro as configurable as this new Mac Pro?

Honestly, I love the design. Each time I see another picture, I fall into love with it.

I'd love to quit my job and turn photography from a hobby into a profession and make this my main machine. It's incredible!

I'm just seeing the spec page and in the 24 and 28 core part it says 'Support for up to 2TB' but in the memory part it says 'up to 1.5TB'. I wonder witch one is right, not that I'm getting any of them, just wondering. lol.

Well there are only 12 slots for 128GB DIMMs, 1.5TB makes sense; if there are 256GB DIMMs then it would be supported still.

No. I think a client who walks into such office already knows the quality of their work, their clientele and was referred to them by others in their industry. At that point price is not the main concern.

Anway, I could have sworn she said the 13 inch MBP would run that beast over TB3. I will have to go back and re-watch, but I could have sworn she said it. I think a loaded 2017 iMac will drive it.

Well, my 2018 MBP doesn't actually struggle for under most conditions with my LG 5K. It's fine for most daily tasks, but there are moments when I'm culling a few hundred photos in Capture One Pro in full screen mode and flipping through RAW files one after another to figure out which one I like the best. That's when I hear the fans kick on and the browsing will eventually slow down and I suddenly realize, "damn, that's a lot of pixels in front of me."

It's partially because of my MBP having difficulty sustaining an extended culling session that I like to do my culling directly on my laptop and only go to the external display when I'm editing. So I love my 5K display, but I can't really use it for some of the things I really want to use it for.

I'd love to be able to drive both screens at the same time without any hitch, but even with the Vega 20 model, it struggles at some tasks. We're kind of at this weird moment in tech where our technologies have advanced faster than their ability to communicate with their counterparts. When the problem with the link between display and the computer is no longer a thing, I'd hazard to guess that we'll see a lot more competition and much lower prices across the board. Until then, owning a 6K display is going to be an aspirational thing for me.

If I recall, people went batspit crazy when they announced the cost of the trash can pro. I think it was $2999. This is double that. Lol.

Yes hello, I'd like to take out a loan and second mortgage on my house so I can get.... this apple display stand, thanks.

some perspective for the people are complaining about the price

https://www.boxx.com/systems/workstations/s-class

A company that can't even create a web button that is the entire box...I don't trust this comparison.

The fact that Apple only includes 256gb SSD is crazy! A terabyte of really good SSD can be had for under $500.

And when adjusting for inflation, it's half the price of a Mac II (another pro workstation, back in 1987, that finally gave people slots etc. instead of all-in-one systems).

How does the base price compare to the most recent previous upgradable Mac Pro, aka the 2012?

Wow. I used to think folks on Mac forums understood technology. Guess I'm mistaken. Some of you do, but holy cow, the rest of you?

Do you know what a workstation is? Do you know the difference between Xeon and Core CPUs? Do you even know what ECC RAM is?

Apple has built a kick-ass workstation here, at an incredible price (it's about damn time). This is NOT an iMac Pro sans display. It's in a completely different category. This Mac finally competes with the likes of HP and Dell workstations, and bests them in many ways (i.e. gobs of Thunderbolt ports, 10Gb ethernet, "Afterburner" accelerator card option, MPX module options, etc.).

Run on over to hp.com, and custom configure yourself an HP Z4 (single socket Xeon CPU box) with identical specs to Apple's entry level config (or as close an equivalent as possible) and then ask yourself if you have any clue how much workstations cost!

I did that very thing... Matched up each component to exact or near exact items in new Mac Pro. The result? HP Z4 = aprox $7200.00.

Time to educate yourselves.

Worse yet, in 5 years when we're wondering when the next Mac Pro is coming out, it will still be $11K.

This is coming out just in time before the great recession hits!

I actually really like that stand. It reminds me of the "lampshade" iMac G4.

Of course he is.. he went to Bed Bath Beyond kitchen section for his inspiration!

I don't think think that's as crazy at it appears because onboard storage is not going to be the primary way of storing data for many of the buyers of a machine like this. It maxes out at 4TB. They're probably going to be hooking this up to an array of external drive bays.

iMac Pro has Xeon and ECC memory. It has 10gbe, the same number of TB3 ports. Buy-in for the new Mac Pro w/ monitor is $11k base. iMac Pro base can be had for about $4400. It's nearly 3X the price.
