The new Touch Bar is really cool, but the price and lack of upgradable RAM beyond 16GB is what kills it for me. I don't buy a new Mac every year, or even ever two years. It's more like every four years. I'm sure I'll love editing hundreds of 100MP RAW photos from the Sony A9II in the year 2020 on 16GB of RAM. It baffles me that we can't even pay to upgrade it on a machine that I've spec'd out at $3500. Also their SSD prices are still a bit crazy, and I people were saying that they're not even using Intel's newest processors? Is that really correct?

I think I'm going to hope that the next iMac update doesn't suck and just keep my mid-2012 rMBP.

Magical?

Jokes aside, if I was in charge, I would have made the entire trackpad be a context-sensitive screen. Use of know-gained while developing iPhones and iPads would have made the process relatively simple to implement. That would have justified the price increase. Maybe.

This product release screams short term strategy to retain profitability without considering the long-term implications of pricing beyond reach a significant proportion of current mac owners.
I guess its good that you're not in charge then, since that idea survives about 8 seconds of scrutiny.

FFS Emojis? is that really what the pro line up has come too??
Been a reader of Mac Rumours for years and years, I've have read through comments often but never had the inclination to comment. So flipping disappointed with this today, was looking at upgrading my 2013 Macbook pro in Jan...why remove Magsafe? I'm very used to paying the extortionate apple tax but why so little so ***** expensive, doesn't make any sense!

What else are you going to use that bar for when you're in the messages app? Also why do you need MagSafe if you have 10 hours of battery life? Don't get me wrong I love MagSafe but my mbp battery only lasts 2 hours. Honestly you just sound like an angry person.

If you only buy a Mac every 4 years, why is price even a concern?

A base 15" model costs $1.60 per day to own and use for 4 years. You have to be kidding. This place is infested with non-pros, wannabe-pros, and people like to play one on the internet.

ports aside, do you guys think it's worth the difference between the touch bar version over the "normal" new 13" pro?

Yeah you are right Tim, it's just 20 Cents per hour if you work 8 hours a day! WTF! You should have tripled the price!

I totally agree, it's a ****ing joke. I was considering buying the 15" version before seeing the prices, but it's way beyond common sense. In Switzerland they are asking for $2,720 !!
Wtf...

I'm gonna buy the 13" but I'm getting real sick of apple, between ****** iPhones and ever-expensive mbp... and pricing policies made just to take advantage of people. $1,000 price difference to get the larger screen (well, and some specs they force down your throat).

I just hope the RAM is upgrable because I don't wanna pay $250 to have 16gb

It's worth it.

Just spend the money, buy it, and you'll never complain about it.

The only people that ever complain about tech products are the people that don't spend money to buy the expensive version.

MR forums has turned into a major cesspool of complaints. Every comment has been positive from people that have used it. The people that haven't are crying foul.

The people Apple invite to those things are people/media they know will love the thing regardless of whether it's crap. People who give negative opinions are usually no longer invited to Apple keynotes. It's not an unbiased opinion, it's Apple fanboy journalists.

Tim Cook at the 2022 Apple event:

"Last year we introduced the AppleCar with these beautiful static Rose Dust wheels and incredible Deep Black tires... This year we made them functional: Yes, you didn't misheard, now they actually rotate so you can start your car and also drive it."

The touch bar will be one of those things that people are skeptical about until they use it, and then when have that moment of realisation they use a device without it.

Happened to me with 3D Touch.

Ha I never used 3D Touch on my 6S and went to an SE. Don't miss it at all.

If you are a pro user your MBP spends most of its time tucked away while you use an external display, external keyboard and mouse. So not much use for the touch bar in that instance.

I like the touch bar idea. It seems like a good compromise between having something dynamic and visual to manipulate with touch, and not getting fingerprints all over your nice screen. I am looking forward to seeing how people end up using it with their favorite shortcuts in xcode or excel and the like.

That said, demoing it with emojis is really tone-deaf on Apple's part. It shows they really don't listen to feedback showing people associate emojis with tackiness and amateurism. They're fun and colorful for sure, but that is not the right first message to send. They should have led with how it will look in final cut pro x, then how it will look in xcode. Those are the users Apple needs to impress. Then show word, excel, mail, safari, etc. to show us worker-bees how this will help our day-to-day work.

For example, having a shortcut to trace-dependents or trace-precedents in excel would be awesome for me. It's not sexy, but who cares? By leading with emojis, they lost the respect of the audience.

Prices in the UK have definitely shot up.

Even the Macbook price has gone up in the time the new ones went on sale.

That's Brexit and the drop in the pound I guess.
