No 32GB RAM option? I'm disappointed with this to say the least, and the touch bar really didn't impress me. I'd rather have a touchscreen.

And the Dell XPS 15 has 32GB option AND a touchscreen, and still cheaper.
Yeah but its a dell ;( and it has windoz good luck with that :)

This is a major value add to a portable computer and it will be interesting to see app developers employ it to simplify even complicated app uses. The concept of contextual controls is a major source of leverage to simplicity and power both. I will be a late adopter, but watch this product mid-cycle.

FFS Emojis? is that really what the pro line up has come too??
Been a reader of Mac Rumours for years and years, I've have read through comments often but never had the inclination to comment. So flipping disappointed with this today, was looking at upgrading my 2013 Macbook pro in Jan...why remove Magsafe? I'm very used to paying the extortionate apple tax but why so little so ***** expensive, doesn't make any sense!

I agree that this thing Apple seems to have with emoji's is ridiculous, but I do understand it is my age showing more than anything. I wouldn't say I'm disappointed in the update today, because I wasn't expecting some huge leap forward.

I'm getting my work done just fine on my early 2013 rMBP 15" (maxed out version), so it's not like I'm suffering because my ssd is 3 versions behind in speed or the screen isn't as bright or has as the same wide color gamut. But I'll gladly accept a ½ pound weight savings and less volume. It's kind of like how I've seen the iPhone 7. Great update, love the gloss black, water resistance and dual lens camera, but my 6S+ is working great, so no real reason to upgrade at this point.

Pricing seems to be right in line with where the MacBook Pro's have been. As the old adage goes, you get what you pay for. If I can get 3 to 4 years of daily work out of the laptop, the cost is nothing - just like IBM seeing Apple computers costing less per device than a competing PC over the life of the unit.

My thoughts:

It is much too small. Look at the size of a physical key compared to the Touch Bar. Such a pain to use.

It is in the wrong place. It is so awkward to be constantly reaching over the keyboard to use these buttons.

Touch means that you have to be constantly looking down. This goes directly against a large pat of the functionality of using a laptop or desktop; the advantage of only needing to look at the screen is dashed by the Touch Bar.

It seems that this misguided Touch Bar is an apt metaphor for the mess that Apple is in at the moment. Apple used to represent focus under Steve Jobs. Laser-sharp focus. That was his mantra. Yet with this Touch Bar, one is constantly losing focus by glancing down at the keyboard then glancing up at the screen. That seems to represent the lack of focus that typifies Apple under Tim Cook.

One or two others have mentioned this: I think that if they wanted to introduce additional touch functionality, they should have used the existing trackpad and created some icons around or in it. There is a large amount of space around the trackpad, and it is more natural to use that space for touch. That, to my mind, would have represented an organic development of the trackpad, and been a better application of touch.

Apple is a mess of predictable, confused and usually delayed products which are ever increasing in price. At this point I'm willing to believe Apple are simply testing the market to see what the maximum people are willing to pay is.

The Touch bar is probably something I would use for a week and that forget that it exist. Like Siri or 3D Touch.

Right now my finger is moving on the trackpad within a couple of square inches and does everything I want (except typing of course) - why would I want to move my finger up to the Touch Bar to do the same things ? Why not simply make it a Touchscreen then ? I already have to move my entire hand, might as well give me full Touchscreen functionality then.

Yikes Apple, seriously.

"You have to look down at your keyboard now with the Touch Bar!"

And? I type 125 words p/m but I still have to look down if I use any of the function keys. Who the hell has muscle memory for 'fn + f6' - But now with the touch bar I only have to tap once, and you'll only have to look down until you get used to where the buttons are there as well. Jesus, have some foresight.

"EMOJIS WTF!?"

Really? That's all you see? You can't be that shortsighted to think THAT is worth your time to complain about. There is so much customization and usefulness in something like this, they are SHOWING you the emoji's because that's what the AVERAGE person gives a **** about. If you are a true pro user then you should be able to see the potential of what the TouchBar will be able to offer you.

Ha I never used 3D Touch on my 6S and went to an SE. Don't miss it at all.

If you are a pro user your MBP spends most of its time tucked away while you use an external display, external keyboard and mouse. So not much use for the touch bar in that instance.

Well you've made it very easy for me to shut both statements down in one fell swoop.

You ≠ everyone

Was going to wait for this, but needed a new laptop asap and pulled the trigger on a previous gen MBP instead. Glad I did.

If Apple keeps this up, my next laptop will definitely be a PC.

If you only buy a Mac every 4 years, why is price even a concern?

At 15" model costs $1.60 per day to own and use for 4 years. You have to be kidding. This place is infested with non-pros, wannabe-pros, and people like to play one on the internet.
I make most of my money with my work provided iMac at my work. I use my personal rMBP for freelance and personal projects. I also live in the midwest so my income is at least 60% lower than most designers and developers on the coast and in major cities. Lastly, school loans, two kids including a newborn, just put a huge down payment on a house, and just replaced my 1998 junker with a new car paid in cash, and we're remodeling the basement for my wife's daycare. Clear enough? Price isn't even the real deal breaker for me—it's the fact that I can't even pay them for more RAM. 32GB and I'd be good. The cost-benefit analysis just isn't making sense for me if I'm going to be replacing it in another year or two. I'm also saving up to switch camera systems from Canon dSLR because I'm tired of their crap to Sony mirrorless which is going to be pretty expensive, though I can bridge the gap and maybe keep some of my L glass with EF mount adapters at the cost of autofocus speed. So yeah, lots of concerns.

I have to say that I am very disappointed in this release. Apple has yet to update the specs of the larger iPad Pro. It is the only product I would consider purchasing at this moment if they upgraded the cameras on it to at least the same specification as the 9.7" iPad Pro. Apple should also consider moving the rear camera to the middle of the iPad.

I do not think I will be upgrading to a new mac anything soon. The ASUS 501 looks like a better deal. Why did they not upgrade the display from "Retina" to 4k already?

Love the freakout and the peanut gallery regarding a piece of hardware we've only seen in contrived demos.

And the emoji whining too. Gee... adding emoji keys to messages? You're right, for pros they should have included shortcuts to: "WHAT!? NO KABY LAKE!?" and maybe "RTFM" or "Apple is really losing it."

I would be ordering today but... gonna wait till I can buy it outside of Apple. I've generally purchased new laptops from MacMall.

Touch Bar? sure looks great.

but, have you seen the touch screens on the windows pc's? its about time Apple steps up and offers touchscreen as well. not just on an bar
I let friends use my MacBook Air all the time. My screen has a bunch of fingerprints from them trying to use its touch screen. After they adjust to the UI, I always ask them which experience was easier and more intuitive, your Windows PC or this Mac PC. 90% of the time they say Mac. So it is not all about a feature checklist or specific hardware specs. Hasn't been for over 5 years now.

They are mostly locked into the Microsoft ecosystem, just like iPhone users are, so not many switch at this late date. Apple could lean into that and make notable progress. The Keynote today emphasised how all small business MS products are on the Mac, notably Outlook. Run some ads without criticising MS but showing the benefits of Mac and full access to the MS ecosystem. Apple wants to replace Dell and HP, not MS. For goodness sake make a POS system and an appliance Mac (Mac-Mini industrial w/PCI slot, serial ports, click or screw to lock required) to replace all the headless PC's out there. Apple has the tech to make it about 4-6x the volume of an iPhone 7+ to fit the ports and card. External PCI card slot with dust sleeve??

If Apple could transition that user base to wireless systems as equipment is replaced it could add enough business to move the needle, unlike the watch.

Yeah I've seen them and I for one sure don't want one. A touchscreen works great on an iPhone or iPad, but is terrible on a notebook or desktop computer. I don't want to have to constantly wipe down my display and have gorilla arms from having to touch the screen all day either. Besides, Apple already makes the 12.9" iPad Pro for those that do want that sort of thing.

Don't see the reason why they want to blend the touch ID in with the touch bar.
It looks ok from a distance, but once you see it up close, it looks kinda tacky.

It feels like those family vans where they try to blend the door rail in with the windows.
It sound good on paper, but doesn't look good at all.

Its a valid point. For the machine that is at the heart of your business/work/life...$1.60 per day is nothing.

Feeling like I'm watching a UNICEF commercial when I hear, "For just a $1.60 per day..."

They seem to be charging us $500 for that toolbar, so it better be the best dang toolbar the world has ever seen.
