Downloaded the app, did some test locations. Nailed my own home, but has my parent's house in Florida about a 1/4 mile down the street from where they are. Ironically, Apple maps nailed both of them perfectly. Not trolling, just reporting. The one thing Google maps needs is to access my contacts...I shouldn't have to search for every single location that I already have in my contact list.

Report it and it'll be fixed tomorrow.

Apple maps is "STUPID"

I live in the US (I haven't encountered any Apple map issues) and don't need transit directions so I'll probably stick with Apple maps. I did download the new Google maps app though since it's free and it's great to have options.

Apple Maps has issues..... This is blatantly obvious....

It is kind of "amazing" how some people's hypercritical focus on errors or shortcomings suddenly vanishes when the Google logo appears on an app.

Seems like a weird business move for Google. Apple was paying them to use Google maps. Google refuses to include turn by turn and Apple drops Google and now releases their own free app with turn by turn. So now they arnt getting paid at all. Unless they plan to monetize the app with ads or something in the future.

I'd love to see the look on Tim Cook's face..

The man had the balls to admit their software wasn't good and even offered users a special maps section in the app store.

Hopefully, he's pulled it up on his iphone and b!tch slapped all those people who convinced him Apple maps was good enough for release. Although, I guess fireing Forstall is a pretty good b!tch slap.

It's sad when the best thing about an iPhone are the Google apps. Google Maps is light years ahead of Apple Maps, Chrome is infinitely better than Safari, and Google Search is leaps and bounds ahead of Siri. My next phone will be an Android.

finally here)))
but, for Apple maps there is a new challenge, but they couldn't catch up with previous (obvious) ones

Haha just noticed something pretty funny.

It has Google+ built into it.

If you go to a popular location (e.g an Airport) and slide up to look at details, you can look at photos. You can tap the persons name, and a Google Plus mobile window pops up.

Also notice a rather cool thing. If you visit a weblink, you have the option of opening it in Chrome instead of Safari.

Does do voice turn-by-turn on iPhone 4

- Google's blog post on the app notes that Google Maps for iOS supports iOS 5.1 and higher, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. Apple's turn-by-turn voice navigation does not support iOS 5 and those two iPhone models.

Well, I haven't read through this whole thread to see if anyone else has noted this, but I have a iPhone 4 (not 4S) and it's running iOS 5.1.1 and I do have voice turn-by-turn. I actually didn't expect to get it, but lo and behold the thing starts talking to me, giving me turn-by-turn through my car's audio system (I have my phone bluetooth paired with a 2008 non-nav BMW...OEM audio). I've also tested this out outside of the car, just putting in a close-by address and walking in the general direction of the directions, and Google Maps chrips right up and announces turns.

Pretty cool, and I'm happy. :)

I think that's the idea. If Google shows iPhone owners what they can give you by default on their OS, you just might switch. BTW, there's a new Gmail app out that's pretty nice as well. I use Gmail, Chrome and Google maps and sign into all of them with one account. Chrome is awesome on iOS.

Traffic data seems way more reliable than Apple Maps too.

For a test/proof/example, on both apps, look up 'Heathrow Airport' - its one of the UK's biggest and busiest airports, and is the third busiest airport in the world.

On Google Maps, it shows clear traffic data on all surrounding roads.

On Apple maps it shows nothing at all.

I wonder how long it will be before Apple decides to grace us iPhone 4 users with turn-by-turn Apple Maps, after all. Maybe even Siri.

It's working too.

Google listend to pissed off customers with Android 1,2,3 being very slow and fragmented on many devices. They tightened up the requirements to make handsets more powerful, and unified the OS to give a much more natural user interface flow.

The "Android is a rip off of the iPhone" bollocks really has no place anymore as the two are VERY different these days, going down very different paths.

Whilst I did buy an iPhone 5, it was a very close call between the 5 and the S3, and the only reason the 5 won was because I already had an Android handset for development, and needed a newer iOS handset to work on.
