I like Apple's plan on the NFL games, it's a great marketing idea. I read about it on yahoo news the other day, and submitted it here, and they said that there's going to be more than one recording for each game. It suggested local as well as national accounts of the games, and also highlights. They said that the full game reports will be around $10, while the highlights will be in the range of $1-$5. I'll probably buy the full NFC game, but it really does seem like a great idea, although it won't really show through until next season.

If your favorite team is, say, the Eagles, and your stuck in California, you probably won't see their game. However, the next day you can listen to it on your iPod, and it'll be just like home. If they're business men, they could download it and listen to it on the plane ride back. It just seems to be a great idea to me.

Yes, waiting on 10.3.8. Should be good.

Anymore "holy Cow" thoughts on iPhoto? I heard it's good, but whatcha got?

Maybe pats win, maybe not. I don't think so though. I'm not playing, so I have nothing to do with the outcome of the game. it's a great excuse to drink some beer on a sunday.

Steve, steve, steve..... Bring it on tuesday. I want to fall out of my chair!!

iPod

I personally don't get the NFL on iPod. How many times do you actually record a game on TiVO to watch later? Once I know the result and see/read the highlights, I'm done. Is this a way to gather in the sports lunatics to Macism? Interesting visual... guy, painted all blue, with a iPod. I guess they wouldn't have to use the shadow effect on their commercialls in the future.

have a great weekend everyone!

X.3.8

Let's hope that X.3.8 graphics card drivers and openGL improvements will improve my GeForce 6800 Ultra. Not that it doesn't do a good job compared to everthing else, it's just that it's under achieving with the current drivers (why don't NV write thier own drivers like ATI?)

Can't say I've seen any of the networking problems on .7 that some have mentioned, and as for safari taking 2 hits to load a page, that was on .6, .7 cured that. X.3.7 was a good update for me, but I'm looking forward to more updates 'cos of the graphics improvements.

Nvidia doesn't write their own drivers because its almost pointless.

OpenGL implementation is done through an Apple implemented library that filters the driver driven hardware for use on the system.

Nvidia can't alter that OpenGL implementation, so they'd be flying pretty blind.

I have been asking myself that same question. Once you know that outcome, why would you watch/listen to a recorded game?

logic pro updates are badly needed and the logic lists are going nuts over it. we are trying to consider the path that FCP took as the logic path is probably going to be similar. the recent update was a little help, but it's core functionality of things like adc that will be critical to audio pro's. i'm looking forward to more audio application announcements and updates with logic pro and tiger.

Yeah, I'm surprised there wasn't a big announcement at NAMM. That would have been a perfect opportunity.

My issue with iPhoto 5

in the previous versions of iPhoto I was able to right click on a pic and select "open in external editor." But no more. I have gone into the preferences and set Photoshop as the external editor, but not the default for double clicking on a pic. The bizarre thing is the option is there in the contextual menu, it's just grayed out. There doesn't seem to be anything I can do do make it active. Any suggestions? This seems like a bug.

Off topic - two words: Corey Dillion. Pats by 10. Easy.

On-topic, can't wait to try iLife '05 which was delivered by Fedex to my house today (I'm at work). Anyone know if it "updates the library" in iPhoto, like previous editions.

Cheers,
hughdogg

Yeah, it updates the library. I got mine today and loaded it at lunch. I can't wait to get home tonight and work with it!

the new mac minis shipped with iLife '04 installed, but iLife '05 was also sent along with the new minis...

so i'm guessing it will come with iLife '05, but whether or not it is pre-installed i don't know.

I placed an order for a 12" powerbook back on the 16th. Soon after I ordered, my ship date became an estimated 7 to 10 days. Now the order info says that my Powerbook should ship "on or before 02/01/2005" - which is a Tuesday for those keeping score.

this is very good news. Thanks!!!

8A351 won't install from OSInstall.mpkg like previous builds and I don't have a DVD burner. Guess I'll have to put it on my iPod and head up to the Apple Store to burn it.

I am relatively new to Apple products. Could someone explain to me what the definition of the “Halo Effect” is? And I also am seen the in some post that mentioned “Freescale Processors” I thought Motorola made the G4 not Freescale?

iLife 05

I just received and installed iLife 05 on my dual processor 2.5Ghz PowerMac G5 with 8GB of RAM. Between constant application crashes and the inability to import photos from my CF cards that worked fine with iPhoto 04, iPhoto 05 reminds me of my old MS Windows days. Almost every mouse clisk (if iPhoto doesn't crash) results in the spinning dial for several seconds.

Great features (when it runs) but a huge step backwards in reliability, stability, and performancce that I was previously spoiled with on my Mac. The minor iTunes upgrade appears stable and I have not tried the other iLife apps as most of my source material is in iPhoto.

It doesn't appear the iPhoto library is backwards compatible with the 04 version so make a good backup before installing iLife 05.

The "Halo Effect" is a matephore used to describe the good vibes windows users get with their iPods transfering to an interest or desire to purchase an Apple computer. Freescale is a reference to Freescale's AltiVec technology which is part of the G4 processor.

Not even M$ would release something like that, I ain't got my iLife yet so I'm open to critisism that I don't know what I'm spouting about, but I can't see this being how things are.

Are you sure you installed after doing all the pre-install stuff (permissions etc)

My guess is this will be very few peoples experience, but backing up your photo library is always a wise move and routine for me before an upgrade, as with your tunes and an itunes upgrade (not as though we get one this time)

If I remember rightly some experienced problems when upgrading to 4.0/4.0.1 etc, there was a fairly simple way to correct the corrupted library, but I can't remember how it went now, perhaps someone will remind us all.

Are you sure about this???

I thought the halo effect was something to do with Steve being an angel and protecting us all from the evil empire until the day that hell freezes over. Isn't Freescale a nuclear power plant and reprocessing facility in the north of England.

Actually, Freescale refers to the company Freescale, which was spun off of Motorola. It now manufactures the G4 processors and derivatives/new versions of them.

The spinoff company may have been named after "freescale altivec" technology that Motorola created for the G4, I don't know so I can't say.

I'm going to have to go to the Apple store to play around with iWork before I buy it. Microsoft Word (and Safari) is the only program that crashes on my Mac, so it'll be nice to get rid of that crap.

I haven't been using Safari lately, just Camino, so I don't have to worry with that ;)

But yeah, Office 2004 (and X too) just... sucks! Word kept crashing, until I figured out it was the spell checker's fault ;). I write mostly in Portuguese, so that functionality is useless to me. The thing is, I forgot to disable it as I always do with every version of Word...

MSN Messenger 4 used to crash, too, but now I'm using aMSN, so, there's another piece of M$ software I don't have to use ever again! (btw, I have also dumped Hotmail in favour of a Gmail account, even though I set up a Passport with it, to use the Messenger protocol  )

Oh, there's these two other programs that also crash every now and then... CorelDraw 11 crashes a lot, just like the Windows version, and usually when performing the same kinds of actions (yes, it's amazing... It's such a perfect port, that they seem to have ported the bugs as well :D). Freehand MX also crashes, although less often. It used to crash when I tried to select a specific font, which I found to be corrupted. I deleted it in FontBook and everything was fine then, but the little bugger still crashes sometimes...

But heck, bring 10.3.8 already! The app launching times should be faster, IMHO. Even though I bumped up my 20'' iMac G5's ram to 1,25GB and everything in the system now works so much smoother, I still thing that there's room for improvement on the speed front.

I don't have all these apps but I have some and have no problem with them, I don't like office, it's far too cluttered for my liking, but whilst I don't like it I've never had any problems with it crashing.

With all the crashes you experience, I'd seriously look at your system, you shouldn't be getting them. The only crashes I ever get are appleworks, about once every 3-4 months and X-plane almost every time I use it, but then I'm always adding stuff to x-plane, and usually putting the stuff I add in the wrong places.

Try Diskwarrior!

iLife 05

Well, I'm not sure what pre-install things I was suppose to do but I did follow the directions and I am not new to computers (although fairly new to Mac OS X).

I reverted back to my M$ days and re-installed iLife. We'll see how it goes but so far, it appears the crashing problems happen mostly when importing Raw photo images.

I'm very open to suggestions and I am as surprised as anyone else would be with these problems.

BTW, the only other app that has ever crashed on this system is MS VPC v.7 and I don't really need any Windows apps on it anyway. Overall, it is rock solid!!

Thanks!
Sam
