Stupid cowards. Drop support to fully functional working perfectly devices is nothing short than greedy pitiful treachery
Understand your frustration if you have one of the potentially affected devices.

Tim, is there more background to this rumour? For example, do these devices lack certain features that iOS15 will require? Or is it a business decision to limit the number of different iPhone configurations to be supported? Any link to being / becoming vintage / obsolete?

Apple will drop support for the iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus in next year's release of iOS 15, according to a rumor shared today by Israeli site The Verifier.

iPhone-6s-main.jpg

If the rumor is accurate, that would mean iOS 15 will be compatible with the following Apple devices:
  • 2021 iPhone series
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone SE (2020)
  • iPod touch (7th generation)
The site said last year that iOS 14 would be the last version of iOS that the iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus would be compatible with, which wouldn't be a surprise as Apple often provides software updates for approximately four or five years after the release of a new device.

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus originally launched in September 2015, followed by the iPhone SE in March 2016.

The Verifier doesn't have the greatest track record when it comes to accurate leaks with both hits and misses, but it did accurately predict that iOS 14 would be compatible with all iPhones and iPod touch models able to run iOS 13.

There's no word on which iPads will be able to run iPadOS 15, but if iPadOS 15 is compatible with all iPads able to run iPadOS 14, it will work on the iPad Air 2, 3rd-gen iPad Air, iPad mini 4 and 5, 5th, 6th, and 7th-generation iPads, and all iPad Pro models.

Good. Welcome people to the year 2020. Those same people can finally ditch their VCR’s also.

While old iPhones running old versions of iOS and using old apps (except financial apps and eBay app) will work forever - Web browsers - all of them - will become more & more crippled as the years go by until they'll only work on a select few websites.

Based on how hellish iOS 9.3.5 is to use on the internet today, my guess is the 6S will experience "internet hell" in about 3-4 years from now running iOS 14.

Is it really a rumor or essentially just something that's more along the lines of an educated guess, which pretty much many have already made?

just curious how are are you guys able to keep your 6s pluses until now?

My parents + in-laws had their 6s pluses on launch day and around a year ago, their phones were so slow, screen was almost unresponsive, and the lighting port was starting to wear out to the point were we decided to upgrade all 4 6s pluses in January 2020 to the IPhone 11.

Not sure what they we’re doing wrong. 🤔

Still using 6S and no need to retire it, works perfectly. iOS 14 will be newest OS for almost year now and after that nothing dramatic happens in 1-2 years.

My iPad is running iOS 12 because support ended and works just fine. I don't know why I would need to upgrade it..
My wife has a 6s plus and it stalls 3 seconds before you do anything. Happens in most apps. Any ideas why?

If it is fully functional, it will continue to be so. Nothing cowardly about a business decision to stop coding and testing new software for devices that are over a half decade old. It is not Apple‘s responsibility to keep your old phone current with 2021 features.

That’s my wife’s experience regarding the unresponsiveness.

I think this is totally fine. The SE and 6S work great on iOS 13, I wouldn't want to wait until they became unusable. And just because you don't have the latest iOS version doesn't mean you can't do anything. Most apps remain backwards compatible for several years, so you won't be missing out on anything. I really like my SE and I've had zero problems with it. I've never felt the need to upgrade since it runs everything smoothly.

I could see this going either way. They haven't completely dropped support for A8 devices yet and they've stuck to one chip generation per update-cutoff so far.

Also this is the same site that said iOS 13 would drop 6s and SE.

Hey people, let's mail Apple and tell them we would very much like to see another iOS for the 6s and original SE.
I'll be friendly and will argue with the environmental impact, and that it will make me only more excited to upgrade to a brand new sustainable device in late 2022.
Edit: just saw Apple made iOS 12 updates as recent as November 5th 2020. That is 7 years of software support for the 5s, wow! If they do similar for iOS 14, I'm totally happy!

Still using my original SE and this thing is still smooth and fast on iOS 14. It could make it more years, no doubt, but Apple has to retire support for it sometime I guess. The only thing that sucks about this phone is the battery, but that’s because I’ve used it so much.

Not surprising. ML is playing an increasingly important part in Apple’s software and the 6s will just be too slow for that.

I’m surprised that they’re still supporting the 7 series - but perhaps it won’t get ML goodness.

iOS 14 will still be good for 2 or so years after the fall 21 for those left behind.

I'm assuming they'll drop support for the iPad mini 4, iPad Air 2, iPad (5th generation), and probably not the iPad Pro 12.9" (1st generation) nor the iPad Pro 9.7", since they did give the A8/A8X iPads one more year of support versus the iPhone 6.
Yeah I'd bet that at a minimum iPad Air 2 (which is on it's 7th year of support now) and Mini 4 will be dropped as well. They actually received 2 extra years of software updates compared to the iPhone 6 (which was left on iOS 12), but it seems that has everything to do with the 2 GB of ram in the A8/A8x iPads versus 1 GB in the iPhone 6/+ and not the capabilities of the A8 itself. Apple may choose to clean house this time and make the minimum spec for iOS 15 the A10, but I guess we'll see.
