I'm still amazed when I think that my 6s came with iOS 9 and I've updated to 10, 11, 12, 13 and everything went very smoothly. I'm going to stick on iOS 13.7 as it works very well and I don't need all the bells and whistles of iOS 14 (although I'm sure my 6s can handle it) I've been through many batteries (some my cost, some Apple paid) and it still performs as when I first bought it.

My 6s has been the best iPhone I've ever owned, the 2 GB of ram is a crucial part of it's performance all these years.
My 16GB 6S runs faster on iOS 14 than it did on 13.

Samsung != Android. And really, a security update is nice, but pointless; the note is still stuck at Android 7. I mean, Apple rolled out a GPS update a few years ago that want back to the 4s.

The fact that the samsung update is considered a "surprise" in the press shows how unusual it is.
The Note 20, from what I have read, is running Android 10. Still not the latest version even though Google has Android 11 running on 2017 phones. The Note 10 did run Android version 9 and 10. Even Google’s model for software support is not great, just 3 years of latest OS releases.

In the real life original iPhone SE has been destroyed since iOS 13. There’s a long thread here on macrumors about this (iPhone SE BT issue related to Apple Watch Siri etc). iOS 14 has (if possible) worsened il. Battery life is almost 1 hour here. a SHAME

Read my post, this is planned obsolenscence, stop defending these remarks.

It's very VERY easy for a company the size of apple to create a team that JUST supports 6S, and creating a version of iOS 15 that's purely to support it. We're not talking about a tiny company here.
I am all for reducing waste and curtailing the impact of these devices on the planet.
In the tech world, to get 7 years of software functionality and security updates (to date) is probably industry leading for consumer devices.
Can they do more? Yes - it would be interesting to see what proportion of older active iOS devices are online and in use daily to a gauge a proportionate level of effort.
Either way - as many have commented elsewhere, nobody is stopping you from using the device, you’re just not going to be up to date on new functionality etc.

If the 6S is not supported by iOS 15 most of the major apps will still work on iOS 14 for some time, so getting a new phone won't be essential.

Considering the battery in my 6S has been replaced I may yet decide to wait for the 2022 phones before getting a new iPhone.

This would confirm then Apple is supporting for 5 OS versions

6s and 7 arent far in specs

There is a point where supporting a device with major iOS updates is not practical. There is planning, development and testing that needs to be done to support older devices. Do you suggest Apple just figure out a way to run iOS 15 on the original 2007 iPhone. Who gets to decide when to stop supporting a particular older device, you, me or some other random user. It is no secret that Apple gives 5 years of major OS updates for their phones. The longest in the industry. It isn’t like the moment Apple stops providing major iOS versions, the phone 6S will become non-operational.

This is bollocks. Planning to use my 6s for at least another decade.
Trying to find a cable to connect it to my updated Macintosh.

My 6s is buttery smooth and I’m not planning to update it to iOS 14 so it’s fine by me. Next September I’m going to upgrade to the newest pro plus (is that what they’re called?).

Sounds like a slippery slope argument.

By that same logic, what’s stopping Apple from creating another department to support the iPhone 6 as well. Or even the 5s? Is Apple expected to keep supporting the 6s indefinitely?

At this point, there are likely very few 6s units in circulation, and it just no longer make sense to devote the resources towards supporting it.

Six years of support is already very impressive for a smartphone and I think Apple has already gone over and above their obligations to the customer here.

I don't know why people act like their phone is going to spontaneously stop working when it doesn't get the latests iOS update. The 6s will continue to work just fine on iOS 14 for years after iOS 15 is released. Apple isn't killing them or forcing anyone to upgrade and the folks that are content with their 6s can continue using them as they were for as long as they like. On top of that, based on Apple continuing to provide security updates to iOS 12 for devices that don't support iOS 13 & 14 there's a good chance that Apple may continue this practice with iOS 14 for the devices that can't upgrade to iOS 15. Is this really the big deal you seem to think it is?

Why would the iPad mini 4 get 15 and not the 6s? The iPhone 6s actually has a faster processor (A9 vs. A8) and the same 2GB of RAM. The mini 4 is getting dropped too.

It's actually 6 OS versions for the 6s (9, 10, 11, 12, 13 & 14). Since Apple is still selling devices that use the A10 (and only just discontinued the A10 based 7th gen iPad) I don't see A10 based devices (which includes the 7) being dropped anytime soon.

I would assume so as well. It looks like they were only talking about which iPhones will not receive iOS 15. I'm assuming if A9 based iPhones are dropped then A8 & A9 based iPads will be dropped as well.

Planned obsolescence my ass. Name me one Android phone you’ll get 5+ years of updates for...

I can’t wait to see the kind of support the newer phones will get (X and newer) with how good the chips have gotten.
I don’t see Apple giving my X 7–8 years of updates, even if it could handle it (or the 12 Pro I’m planning to get).
