just curious how are are you guys able to keep your 6s pluses until now?

My parents + in-laws had their 6s pluses on launch day and around a year ago, their phones were so slow, screen was almost unresponsive, and the lighting port was starting to wear out to the point were we decided to upgrade all 4 6s pluses in January 2020 to the IPhone 11.

Not sure what they we’re doing wrong. 🤔
I am using a 6S plus right now. I would say it has held up pretty well for me. I do at times, not that often though, have experienced some sluggishness. But in general the phone works pretty well. I am still using iOS 13. My wife has iOS 14 running on her iPhone 6S plus. The 6S+ has held up well and I would have probably used it one more year. It was time to replace it inspired a bit by a really good trade in of $415 through T-Mobile.

Hardly surprising considering the 6S (and A9) will be 6 years old next year. 6 years is a lot longer than some hardware gets software support for. Apple will probably get criticised for it though

I got the iPhone 6S on release day. The battery has been replaced once and it is slow to do e.g. app updates, but it still works.

I’ll see what next year’s iPhone is like and consider getting that. I decided against getting the 12.

Would be nice if they brought back the headphone jack, but I doubt it.

Ok with me as long as the iPhone 13 Mini is actually as small as my original SE and not a mm bigger.

Apple will drop support for the iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus in next year's release of iOS 15, according to a rumor shared today by Israeli site The Verifier.

iPhone-6s-main.jpg

If the rumor is accurate, that would mean iOS 15 will be compatible with the following Apple devices:
  • 2021 iPhone series
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone SE (2020)
  • iPod touch (7th generation)
The site said last year that iOS 14 would be the last version of iOS that the iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus would be compatible with, which wouldn't be a surprise as Apple often provides software updates for approximately four or five years after the release of a new device.

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus originally launched in September 2015, followed by the iPhone SE in March 2016.

The Verifier doesn't have the greatest track record when it comes to accurate leaks with both hits and misses, but it did accurately predict that iOS 14 would be compatible with all iPhones and iPod touch models able to run iOS 13.

There's no word on which iPads will be able to run iPadOS 15, but if iPadOS 15 is compatible with all iPads able to run iPadOS 14, it will work on the iPad Air 2, 3rd-gen iPad Air, iPad mini 4 and 5, 5th, 6th, and 7th-generation iPads, and all iPad Pro models.

I don’t recall any of the last upgrades to add anything that interested me so I am ok with that. Seems phones have reached the point that PCs reached maybe ten years ago: good enough.

Good thing I'm moving to a 12 mini EOY. But really, it takes years for apps to stop supporting a phone once the OS updates stop. The SE might be quicker, to drop than most, though, because it's the only model with that screen size.

however, this is too clear an egregious example of poorly grounded planned obsolescence to be honest
LOL How long do you expect them to support it then? 7 to 10 years? Nothing lasts forever and 6 years in tech is forever that's like me expecting Apple to support my iPhone 12 Pro in 2032 with OS updates.

Apple is the only company in the world to still support a 5-years old phone and push major updates that still bring new features. They will pull the plug after 6 whole years.

I still have one (to bring on vacations) and it still works fantastically well. Considering iOS 14 is its final version, it will ALWAYS work well.

I even have an iPhone 5 that works well, slightly slow sometimes, but it's definitely useable. Starting from iPhone 5S, planned obsolescence is no more.
Just last week samsung had security firmware update for more than 5 years old galaxy s6 and note 5.

Good luck with that. I can't see Apple making a phone as small the the original SE again. Not a big enough market anymore. The 12 Mini is smaller than the 4.7" models which with the bigger screen is perfectly small enough for most people who want a small phone.

The iPhone 6s came out in 2015. By the time iOS 15 comes out, the iPhone 6s will be 6 years old, with full continuous support for software updates and hardware repairs. That in itself is unmatched in the industry.

Security firmware update, would certainly hope so if there is a security hole that is not patched. Did those phones get an update to the latest version of Android? Apple does not just do security updates for 5 year old devices, it gives updates to the latest version of iOS.

One of the huge reasons I switched from Android to iOS is because of this. I had three flagship Android phones between 2012-2015 and only one of them received an update to the next full version of Android. Just sad. Meanwhile I’m still using my 6s as my personal phone and, while it feels aged, it’s perfectly functional. And remember Apple does still do patches for security issues on older unsupported devices from time to time.

Bought a refurbished original SE earlier this year knowing this was going to happen. Don't care because I was never that happy with my 6S Plus and later 8 anyway. Enjoying iOS 14 on it. There are a few performance issues, but they are so far from being like the ones in iOS 9 on A5 devices, and it's actually getting better with app/system updates which we still have almost another year of officially.

Would they still do security patches considering there's a bootrom exploit though?

Samsung != Android. And really, a security update is nice, but pointless; the note is still stuck at Android 7. I mean, Apple rolled out a GPS update a few years ago that want back to the 4s.

The fact that the samsung update is considered a "surprise" in the press shows how unusual it is.

Your point? On Nov. 5, 2020 Apple released iOS 12.4.9, a security update for the iPhone 5s, 6, 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2 & 3 and 6th gen iPod Touch, devices which are 6-7 years old.
It is pretty pathetic the software support Android devices get. And some of those devices are even more expensive then what Apple is charging.

I hate this planned obsolence and how fanboys defend it.

I have a Intel 4770k with 97GTX that I've had since early 2013, 7 years and there hasn't been a single issue with getting the latest games, patches, software for it. I'm on the latest windows and latest everything.

I have a iMac from the same 2013 era, and cannot install Big Sur on it since 2014 is the earliest it supports. I find that absolutely ridiculous that in the Apple world, I'm stuck having to spend well over 2000 for a new iMac, whereas in the PC world, I spent only 90 bucks to fix its power supply, and it continues to this day fighting on, serving my home as a media server, and every day gaming PC that runs most AAA games > 60fps

That's one of the problems when it comes to Apple that I grotesquely hate, my parents are both on 6s and many people I know still have their 6s (and this is after the stupid battery scandal) so all have pretty much brand new 6s batteries and come next year, I'm looking at spend >$2000 for each person to get them the latest and greatest if they want X feature on some piece of new iOS version?

It's great for shareholders, but absolute garbage for consumers

I don’t think this is news. It’s totally predictable.

what wasn’t predictable was the release of iOS 12.4.9 on 5 November 2020 and helps keep iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus (together with that generation of other iOS devices) up to date with security updates.

Think about the age of those devices (and compare to android) and let that sink in.

kudos Apple. Planned obsolescence my arse.

Read my post, this is planned obsolenscence, stop defending these remarks.

It's very VERY easy for a company the size of apple to create a team that JUST supports 6S, and creating a version of iOS 15 that's purely to support it. We're not talking about a tiny company here.
