And this would leave an unused UltraFusion bridge on each end of the the domino chain, and no place for I/O...?
Only at one end, at the other end an PCIe5 bridge providing at least 32 PCIe5 lines and 24 PCIe4 lines for UpTo 4 ISA peripherals. Tb4 still provisioned directly from M2 max soc.
Or Maybe at both ends terminated by said PCIe5/4 Bridges.

3nm wafers have been in production for two months now...
Yes aimed for m3 MacBook Air 15, later iPads, Mac mini iMac etc, m3 Pro, max utra version to be meaningful different than current m.2 maybe all based on the same chiplet just different fabric chip. But not for first wave.

If an extreme chip comes out it’ll show Gurman doesn’t have decent sources at TSMC.
Does feel like the cancellation of Extreme chip may have been the wrong end of the stick - as Apple basically cancelled on TSMC doing 3nm earlier last year.
may be giving the wrong reasons for it if Extreme doesn’t happen - eg if it was planned for 3nm, but they had to keep 5nm around for M2 Ultra then yes likely you’d be looking at thermal issues if you’d planned for 3nm?
Apple has been at the cutting edge in some regards with their silicon, and they do use expensive chip fabrication methods and expensive ways of making their chips - so it’s exciting we’re so close to some news on the Mac Pro.
M.2 extreme never cancelled (actually neither m2 ultra nor extreme exists) confusion is about its bridge as people wrong believe to exist two different bridges One two-way and another four ways because apple only ordered a single bridge, but happens the M2 Max provisions two UltraFusion ends north and south, allowing daisy chain dominoes-like arrangements, but even it may bridge two m2 pro (actually intriguing Why m2 pro also include single UF TBC), there are also a terminator varían that doesn't add extra m2 just PCIe5 lines.

Neither there are volume restrictions for M2 Max, actually apple has it in excess as to consider new products around it as dedicated compute accelerators and iMac pro/max

M2 MacBook Air is a weird product.

I feel Apple would be better off just ditching M1 and M2 and selling M1 Pro and M2 Pro alongside each other.

I can see the marketing!

“We took our last-generation Pro chips and put them in the new MacBook and they outperform our competition’s top products. Now you can do even more as you learn how to use your Mac in new ways. All of our customers find themselves now with a Pro experience - and a product line that gives more options than ever for our customers when they need more. MacBook is a best-in-class experience and you’re going to love it.”

…cue “Now you can use more than one display! And not just lower resolution, but multiple 5K displays.”…

I think the MacBook Pro is in the best place it’s ever been. That said, I find it tough to recommend a MacBook Air to anyone I know. I’d be suggesting M1 Pro MBP new or used before suggesting a new MBA.

If you rehash this story enough then it eventually comes true and they say I told you so.

I remember a time when they came out with real 💩.
I know, right?

The last good stuff they released was:
  • MacBook Air with M1 SoC
  • MacBook Air with M2 SoC
  • MacBook Pro 13" with M1 SoC
  • MacBook Pro 13" with M2 SoC
  • MacBook Pro 14" with M1 Pro and M1 Max SoC
  • MacBook Pro 14" with M2 Pro and M2 Max SoC
  • MacBook Pro 16" with M1 Pro and M1 Max SoC
  • MacBook Pro 16" with M2 Pro and M2 Max SoC
  • iMac 24" with M1 SoC
  • Mac mini with M1 SoC
  • Mac mini with M2 SoC
  • Mac Studio with M1 Max and M1 Ultra SoC

That was sooooo long ago. Those were the days of glory!

Whither goest the external 120Hz ProMotion XDR display choices for my M1 Max MBP, Apple? I've got 8K/6K HDR work to do and I ain't gettin' any younger! (finger rolls)

LONG way for signal to travel, across that 1x4 domino config...

Time to tell

More beer & pot induced ramblings...?

So update everything to the M3 family of SoCs except the one Mac that needs to transition...?

And the Mac mini just got updated to the M2 & M2 Pro SoCs, no need to rsh the M3 SoCs to them...

It's all just more beer & pot fueled ramblings until some sort of evidence of more than one UF connector is revealed...

The 15" MBA rumors are making me wish I waited before buying my 14" MBP. If they find a way to fit the 15" screen into a laptop a similar size but lighter, and it comes in Midnight blue, I might have to trade in...

What are the chances we get a 15 MBA with touchscreen display? Its time Apple!

I highly doubt this rumored new MacBook Air will have an M3. The M2 was just released 8 months ago.

Whatever is being tapped out now on TSMC's N3 node won't be released until the Fall. Apple needs to stock pile millions just to satisfy demand of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.

The only chance we could see anything from this node before then, is if it's something going into a low-volume product, such as the Mac Pro or high-end Mac Studio.

In the spirit of Springtime, only fifty of the Sunshine Yellow Mac Pro's will ever be produced and will go to the first fifty buyers who max out their order.

I just ordered a 16" MacBook Pro this morning. Really would like to know more information on the 15" MacBook and if it will have m2 or m2pro - if the latter, I want it!
Solid rumormongering suggests that a 15" MBA is imminent. If you want the lesser display, lesser audio, lesser ports, less RAM, lesser throughput, lower price of an MBA, you should wait if you can. Personally I far prefer MBP.

I can’t wait for a 15 inch air but I know the price is going to depress me. I really want a 2TB as a minimum but I know that will make it a £2,500 machine as a minimum.

I really wish they’d price the SSD fairly

Right there with you.
I wish Apple would charge premiums for things that are actually "premium".

Locking down the SSD and then price gouging for what you get -- sucks
