There should be a 12" and a 14" (or larger) model. An 11" display is too small.

Hmm I guess, but then you have an Air in between the Mac Book pro sizes.

That would be nice. It would be my next purchase. i just hope the price isn't too far north of 1k.

How much is the Surface Pro? I would imagine the new Air would be in the same price range more or less?

The 11" has that initial "cool factor" where you realize it's so small, thin and light -- but the way Apple has sold the 11" Air to date, it's still "second class" from the perspective of offering as much power as possible. We standardized on only issuing our employees the 13" version, for example, because we wanted the larger screen resolution, faster processor and option for as large an SSD as possible. Lately, we've only gone with the custom build with 8GB of RAM too -- since our users are generally involved in graphics or video editing work.

This is not true. You can get all the same options on the 11".

The 11" has been marketed as the "lesser model", probably because there are more profits on the 13", but in reality when you look at the benchmarks, the 11" is more powerful than the 13". This is because it doesn't have to push as many pixels.

I used to build computers for performance and am currently a software engineer, and I use the 11" i7 8GB 512GB version every day, and it is an absolute little beast. It even has a higher pixel density than the larger unit.

The trade-off is that the 13" can(and does) fit a larger battery and gets 12+ hours of life. I get 8hrs in real world use out of mine which is enough for my day, so this is a non-issue.

Not interested in the watch but may watch if a new Touch is announced :D.

methinks they are done updating the iPod line. They'll sell these until it doesn't make sense anymore and quietly let the line die. Sales keep falling and now make up a very small piece of apple's profits.

So why did they announce the apple watch at the iPhone event?

Because it is an accessory to the iPhone ... It's not going to canibalise the iPhone market since the A watch doesn't operate at 100% capacity with the phone. If anything it will slightly boost the iPhone sales.
But in any case, as it!s been said, the 12" rmba wouldn't detract from the watch keynote anyway, since they're two very different products.

I'm ordering one of these the minute the Apple Store goes back online next Monday...12" retina Air, fanless, IGZO display, usb type-c (one on each side), thunderbolt on one side and headphone jack on the other, it's going to be very thin...and magical (the new standard for the next 4 years)

Yes!! I have been looking forward to this computer since last summer!
Way more excited about this than the watch personally.

I think it will be:
12" rMBA
13"cMBA <-- possibly updated to retina at somepoint but remain at the same form factor
13+15" rMBP

What do you guys think? I am genuinely interested in y'alls opinions.

I think they're going to introduce this 12" Air with a retina display, the 11" and 13" Air will be [after being offered in parallel to the 12" for a few months] discontinued, then I think Apple will actually offer the Pros in 14" and 16". Three retina machines, 12" Air, 8GB, 512GB SSD max, 14 and 16" Pros with full port allotment, discrete GPUs, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD option (maybe a shift to 16GB max for Air and 32GB max for Pros when the chipset/design/etc. allows for it).

Clear differentiation between the Air and Pro.

That my crazy prediction :)

Have there been parts leaked yet? If it's been in mass production since January you'd think there'd be leaks by now to support claims of an imminent release unless Apple has actually managed to tighten up the supply chain.

A computer is a very different product from an iPhone or iPad. For starters they sell in vastly smaller numbers and there's much less consumer and media interest in them. The aftermarket accessory market is much smaller - there are no case makers bribing factory employees for information so they can get a head start over the competition.

If it weren't for this thing's alleged serious lack of ports, it would seriously cannibalize the rMBP. Seriously, the only reason I'm borrowing an rMBP for college instead of using an '09 MBP is for the retina display. Hardly anyone needs something faster than a new MBA.

Bingo. That's why I have the 13" rMBP. And even though the 13" rMBP is already pretty portable, I'm probably switching to the 12" rMBA.

One more thing...

But will the MacBook Air detract from the hype and stuff of the Apple Watch details? Nah.

That's exactly my prediction as well... Or at least that is what I hope for! :)

That makes sense but then they are missing out on a big market. The 15W performance point.

This new 12" laptop will be less powerful than both the current 11" and 13"
and have a lot less GPU power.

Seriously doubt it.

I really think this will be a no holds barred maximum effort to hype the Apple Watch. I don't expect them to include anything else that would distract from Apple Watch.

I can't see how they can spend the whole event on just the Watch. The last event had the phone, Apple pay, and the Watch. And now they are going to take another whole event to tell us about a product we already know about? Hard to imagine.

Agreed. Yet some people seem to think there's a 0% chance of anything else but the Apple Watch being unveiled at the event, I don't get it.

Apple Watch Needs To Pair With Something ...

... and a brand new MBA / retina makes perfect sense. This is going to be huge.

It would be "embarrassing" to pair the new Apple Watch with an old computer.....and the MBA / retina is the only real option.

Definitely intruiged by those mock ups. Looks like it could be a very attractive device and it would be awesome if it was available in all the same colours the iPhones. People have been asking for a black MacBook for a while! As my Retina MacBook Pro is my main computer, I don't have a need for a MacBook Air. But it still sounds like this could be one hell of an upgrade.

Tim Cook has leaked so much info about the Apple Watch this week (in discussions with employees at various Apple stores around the world- and the info quickly is published even on CNBC), that there must be something else besides the Watch being introduced at this event. If there is nothing else, this will be a very boring event. MBA, but also the Mac Pro Tower is outdated. Intel Haswell Xeons are available, and AMD has redesigned the FirePro graphics cards (still 28 nm, but much more power efficient). As for new Mac Book Pros, I don't think Intel has released those chips yet. Intel has released a new 28 watt Core with Iris 6100 graphics that could go inside a new mini, and they really should just go ahead and put that lame October refresh to bed, but they won't do it because that would show the mini some respect.

Apart from the retina screen, it is the ability to bypass the mechanical button press of the trackpad that is my favourite feature of the rMBP.

I would have personally wish for a 15 inch rMBP in the size of 13 inch MBA.

however, I will settle for a 12 inch IF their are enough ports (minimal 2 USB + charging port + displayport + SD card)

anything less is just retarded.

Heck, my 2012 15 inch rMBP is still working fine, i don't mind waiting for 15 inch refresh

Excited about fanless and smaller bezels. New trackpad interesting. Very much looking forward to the MacBook Pros.

Why would you tolerate the performance hit?

Actually almost everyone needs something faster than a MBA. I don't hold out much hope for the performance of a fanless machine.
