Needs a different remote. The amount of times I have it upside down ...

YES! The current remote is way too much "form over function".

And the new model may address an issue that we experience with our AppleTV 4K. When connected via WiFi, the Netflix app would _slow_to_a_crawl_ over time, requiring a full device reboot! I'm not sure if that's the AppleTV at fault or our home WiFi router, but it was super annoying, and I kept blaming the Netflix app because nothing else was affected. Switching to an Ethernet connection made the problem go away for good. So maybe an AppleTV Wifi issue? I don't know.

Is there any reason to get an Apple TV if you have a Smart TV or a Roku stick?

My girlfriend gave me an Apple TV and I have a Samsung Smart TV. I actually prefer using the apps on the Apple TV over the ones installed on the Smart TV. I'm also weird in that I like the Apple TV remote. The only app I use on the Smart TV is YouTube for 4K videos, but due to everyone being home, those videos aren't available in 4K any more.

Genuinely asking.

Aside from Airplay, I can't think of any exclusive features that are useful (in a general sense).
MY newer LG TV has the apple TV app. Since that update I have not even used the ATV in that room anymore. There isn't any apps that I "need" on my ATV that the TVs don't have.

Why would you get it? What benefit do you get over the current gen?

Would love a paging button on the ATV box and a small speaker in the remote to help me find it when it slips between the couch cushions.

Thunderbolt compatibility so I can plug it into an old Apple TB display, LG UltraFine, or Pro XDR

USB-C Input for Webcam so you can FaceTime people on your TV / have viewing parties. Would also be awesome for business environments if paired with HomePod For the speakerphone as the microphones on those are awesome.

3.5mm output to replace the airport express AirPlay use case would also be nice as Sonos’s solution here is way too expensive.

HDMI 2.1,BT5,WiFi 6, Cinema HDR (Dolby Vision,HDR10, HLG),Dolby Vision IQ,HDR Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro,HGiG,FreeSync,VRR,ALLM,Dolby Atmos,etc.
We will take whatever comes along in updated Apple TV box.

That's not entirely true. The more modern WebOS smart tvs support some multi-tasking. But honestly, Apple TV's multi-tasking sometimes isn't that great either. And yeah, many companies are still developing for Smart TVs, both HTML5 and Android based. The only way for companies to reach more users is to do that.
Our Sharp RokuTV doesn't have the multitasking, but it definitely isn't slow, and we haven't experienced any bugs. We have it in the living room, and the Chromecast TV with ATV connected is in the bedroom.

My current 4K AppleTV isn't very fast, but obviously does what is intended. I can't figure out if that is because of hardware or software though - my guess is software, but maybe the graphics? I'll give it a look when details are released.
Ours has never been slow except lately it started going super slow on the 2.4GHz network. It's fine on 5GHz though. And everything else that connects to 2.4 is fine.

Apple TV is by far superior in terms of performance and usability when comparing to Smart TV apps. It can also act as a hub for your HomeKit gadgets.

Wow, apples and oranges comparison. First of all, Fios only offers two 4K channels. Second, if I'm going to get 4k, it's not going to be some cheap model. I'm not going to make the jump for just two 4K channels.

I don't think they're going to regress tech for you because you've got a really old tv and use an AppleTV to stream cable TV. I just don't see it happening. But the good news is you can buy an early gen AppleTV that doesn't even have 4K on eBay for super cheap to support your older TV.

Ours has gone to a crawl with anything if we connect to the 2.4GHz network. Didn't do it before a month or so ago, and everything else on 2.4 is fine. It also works fine on 5GHz.

I haven't seen this yet, but for me, it would be because I can use it to play Apple Match Music without Airplay. Alos, from a practical perspective, my old unit died

Ability to use 2 headphones at once would be ideal plus that sound cut out issue on 4k content streaming With New hdmi versions ets would be a nice touch. Im only experiencing audio cut out while using appletv streaming 4k content.

Another instant buy for me

Games (especially co-op with friends), photos and tvOS apps in general, better performance, HomeKit hub.

what's the problem with the remote? love mine
While you are not wrong to love the remote, there are many well documented design flaws.

Key take away from Arstechnica, expanded with my own two cents.
  1. Jack of all trade, master of none: doubles as a game controller and a remote, not optimally designed for either tasks.
  2. Design over function: designed to look good, not for ergonomics -- too small, too slippery, too thin for many hands and not enough buttons for common tasks.
  3. Too symmetrical: all too easy to "hold it wrong" and accidentally trigger the swipe gesture.
  4. Difficult to use in the dark: many buttons indistinguishable from each other, which combined with symmetrical design, easy to trigger the wrong action.

Not much, unless you’re a gamer..

Real gamers wouldn't waste their time on this locked down box. They'd build a low cost gaming PC with AMD's new $120 Ryzen 3300X, get a console or use Stadia or GeForce Now game streaming.

I'd add 5: Inconsistent and missing gestures in third-party apps. Apple really needs to enforce their human interface guidelines, particularly the skip forward gestures.

Would the A12X chip be powerful enough to taking gaming to a new level and compete with Xbox and Playstation?

With the SE getting A13, figured the TV might too.
No, that's why I was hoping they were going to wait until the A14X was released in 6-9 months. Not sure even that GPU would be on par but it might come close with more thermal headroom and a fan in the Apple TV enclosure. The A12X is amazing, the CPU rivals Intels offerings, but the GPU is on par with the current, entry level consoles.

The A12X is faster than the A13 though, and it looks like Apple is skipping the A13X.

i have the same issue with the none-4K Apple TV. When I scroll through the menu too much it becomes Apple Watch Series 0 kind of laggy
