Why not? They cost more. The Note has additional features other Samsung phones don't. Only makes sense to take advantage of the larger display and (slightly) more powerful internals.

While the screen is physically larger, they're the exact same resolution. I would be disappointed to have it on the Air only and not the Mini Retina as well.

I hope that this rumor is wrong and that the rumor of it coming is right along with the rumor of a bigger ipad. I continue to say that Apple needs to have muti windows with a bigger ipad and an integrated keyboard cover. in other words, a laptop killer. Oh and that would answer the question about an ARM based laptop too.

Which also brings up the issue of why is it so hard. We are essentially talking about extending iOS with an OSX feature. Lets make this happen tim!

I think because iOS apps are developed for one particular screen resolution has made it difficult to implement split screen. Android and Windows apps are built to be scaleable so they work on numerous different screens, which I guess make splitting the screen easier.

I guess they'll have to make apps scaleable if they're introduce a new larger phone.

A very simple example: the other day I was in a situation where I wanted to see a list of addresses and map them at the same time. Split screen would be ideal. Instead, I have to go through steps of clicking the home button, opening the maps app and pasting an address, THEN, clicking the home button, opening the list app and seeing the list, THEN (repeat over and over).

There's a configurable gesture to switch quickly between apps. It only takes a swipe. You don't have to press the home button at all.

I'd say you should probably try to keep expectations in check. Just because something is possible, doesn't mean it HAS to or even SHOULD be done. What do you currently get for an extra $100 in the Air? A larger (less pixel dense) display with a very slightly higher clocked processor?

I would have no issue with giving the Air more value. Consumers then have a choice. Do I go for the larger iPad with split screen capabilities (in addition to stated hardware differences) or do I sacrifice said feature for a smaller overall iPad.

I'd still be firmly in the latter camp.

Actually it would have. Split-screen multitasking is not something you can implement easily. It's very difficult to get it right. Maybe you've heard this before (sarcasm yes), but Apple (and Jobs) are (were) prone to get things right at all costs.

Yeah, that iOS 7 is (was) a beauty.

Any software feature for the Air will also be included on the Mini. There is no difference between the two expect for the physical screen size. Apple has never differentiated between the two when it comes to software, and I don't see them doing that now. To do so makes the Mini a "Feature Incomplete" tablet, and Apple isn't going to do that.

Or it could simply add value to a more expensive tablet.....

Stupid feature anyway. The reason devices like the iPad and iPhone are so successful is because of their simplicity. You click an app and you see that app, if you want to use another app you switch to it. All this split screen stuff just makes it a watered down desktop OS.

Should be able to do multitasking across all newest iOS devices with an A7 processor. They all essentially have the same clock speeds (slightly varied, of course) So I doubt that the Retina Mini or iPhone 5S wouldn't be left out.

I have mixed feelings about this. I mean sure, having more than one window on screen can be useful, but isn't that contradictory to what Apple has been pushing, like full screen apps, even on OS X? I don't think the iPhone/iPad would see this.

On the other hand, I think this is actually more of a feature for OS X. One thing I want Apple to copy Windows 7/8 is Aero snap. OS X's expose is awesome, but when it's time to re-arrange 2 windows side by side, it's a chore on OS X.

I was thinking the other day that Apple would save the multitasking feature for the newest iPad to get customers to upgrade. I love my jailbroken iPad 3, but maybe it is time to get the Air. I wonder if they will even offer ios 8 for my ancient device. It's a shame, because my ipad 3 is still running smoothly.

They should go get some help from Google and Samsung, they got this done years ago

Definitely a feature I can see being very useful on the iPad so I can't wait to try it out. I'd rather Apple held off and released finished, reliable software than rush to get an unfinished product out. The maps fiasco comes to mind.

I welcome the feature though I wonder if the iPad Air's 1GB will be adequate and if the new Air will be coming with 2GB?

A true measure of how retarded iOS is when we're getting excited about a crippled version of the functionality REAL computers have had for a couple decades LOL

Unlike Samsung, I think we'll be surprised and find that apple won't boast this as a major feature. Instead it will be included in the '200 new features'

Maybe they don't want a repeat of some of the things we saw with iOS 7 where clearly the early betas were not ready for prime time. If it's not ready then don't show it off yet.

i agree, but we aren't talking about recoding the entire OS. Apple probably has some of the best programmers in the world but yet samsung and microsoft were able to pull it off no problem.
