Timmeh!!

Dang! They are REALLY "dropping the ball" at Apple lately. This feature is on most tablets out there except the iPads. They buy crappy Beats, and now can't program a simple little feature like this? Who is running the show there again!!?

It’s not that hard to spot the Samsung trolls in this post claiming Apple is copying Samsung.

So you are claiming that even though Samsung has had this feature for years, Apple developed this identical feature for iPad in a complete vacuum and independently of what Samsung and Microsoft are doing?

So let me get this straight...

So this is a rumor, about a rumor then... right...

What's really funny is the people here that take this as if it were. Wait for the keynote. Sheesh.

What makes this a simple little feature?

At this rate what are they going to show at WWDC this year - maybe just some new Beats headphones..

It's handy.

Do you like more than one window on your computer? Why?
Do you like more than one program running at one time on your computer? Why?

A very simple example: the other day I was in a situation where I wanted to see a list of addresses and map them at the same time. Split screen would be ideal. Instead, I have to go through steps of clicking the home button, opening the maps app and pasting an address, THEN, clicking the home button, opening the list app and seeing the list, THEN (repeat over and over).

Another day, I wanted an editable note on screen with a browser window. Same issue.

Yes, it's just a few steps to hop from one app to another but there's more utility (and user efficiency) in side-by-side for those situations where you would like 2 separate apps on screen at once.

Is that a "killer" feature? I don't know. But I'd certainly like to have such a feature.

All that is stuff I would do on my Mac Pro, but I certainly avoid doing it on my iPad. Copy-and-paste isn't easily accomplished without a mouse and keyboard.

Now the Windows 8 people can stop making fun of iOS for alleged "bad multitasking."

How do you work that one out? The biggest new feature of the next iOS release and the dev's can't even get a demo working? Gives them even more to laugh at.

Obviously that was the response Tim Cook received from the software guy in charge of the application. Jobs would have responded with, "You're fired! Grab your #%* and get out!"

Tim Cook just says, "I've got a huge golden parachute, what do I care?"

:D :D :D :D

Right, but my desktop is not with me when I need to do something as simple as have a list of addresses and a map. Sure I can do everything I could possibly want to do while multitasking in multiple windows on the desktop back home but that wasn't the situation.

Just think about any situation where you would like to keep almost any kind of list on screen while doing something else. List of products + browser window. List of homes for sale + maps windows. List of apps gone free + app store. List of phone numbers to call + voip app. Calendar of appointments + notes app or maps. Mail + browser. iMessages + Movie app or Map or find my friends. And on and on. And that's just one very simple application where a split screen feature on an iPad would be handy.

This is already available for jailbroken iPads. Why wait for something Apple has to approve? They end up copying jailbroken apps eventually....

iOS should be kept simple. If you want multitasking feature, get a Mac.

Why mac? why not MacPro? with that graphics and speed you could have THOUSANDS of windows opened at the same time:eek:

Dont be foolish, iOS needs better and more usable multitasking. This current system is slow and useless.

What makes this a simple little feature?

Again ... what better way to show how retarded iOS is when we're talking about how 'difficult' it is to supply a crippled version of the functionality REAL computers have had for a couple decades.

What wouldn't have happened? A rumored feature wouldn't be announced/demoed?

Yep. if Steve wanted it ready for WWDC, you'd bet your ass it would be ready for WWDC.

----------

Actually it would have. Split-screen multitasking is not something you can implement easily. It's very difficult to get it right. Maybe you've heard this before (sarcasm yes), but Apple (and Jobs) are (were) prone to get things right at all costs.

Actually, Steve was known for not delaying, but berating people until they got it done right - on time.

Samsung and Windows table with split screen multi-tasking: Who needs split screen in small tablet? Multi-tasking don't make sense in tablets. We have MBA for multi-tasking.

Rumor of split-screen multi-tasking in iOS: I can't wait!! Revolutionary!! True innovation from Apple!

Meanwhile, Apple lawyers gets ready to sue Samsung for split-screen multi-tasking.

One thing I want Apple to copy Windows 7/8 is Aero snap. OS X's expose is awesome, but when it's time to re-arrange 2 windows side by side, it's a chore on OS X.

Try Better Snap Tool

I haven't used multitasking on other devices - would users who have deem it as a 'killer feature'?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 phone which features this. Its a great party piece, but I've never actually had cause to use it for anything. Even on Android it only works with selected applications.

It might be more useful on a larger tablet.

I don't want to succumb to the "Steve would never have allowed it" meme, but it was probably Jobs who had the essential design skill of knowing when to reject "improvements".

(Speaking as someone on the verge of turning off the post-Jobs 'new improved multi-monitor support' in Mavericks, having tried to adapt to it for more than long enough, and going back to the original, correct way of doing it).

For all those who say "this wouldn't happen under Steve" or "Steve would hate this..." okay.. cool, Steve is dead, (RIP my friend) so let's respect him.

He was what made this company what it is today. Tim Cook has always been a PC guy, and things are changing, that happens when leadership changes in companies, whether F500 companies, or not -- we hope that the changes will make the company better and better as time goes along.

I'm excited for what they bring out, and also disappointed for when we are let down by features that aren't released or "YOU CAWPIED DAT UTHER COMPANY #thinkdifferent" -- seriously, think about it, nearly everything any company comes out with is a rendition of someone or something else's idea.. it's who does it better...

Get over yourselves.

On the other hand, I think this is actually more of a feature for OS X. One thing I want Apple to copy Windows 7/8 is Aero snap. OS X's expose is awesome, but when it's time to re-arrange 2 windows side by side, it's a chore on OS X.

Try Moom

I hope the new OS X is exciting because every other WWDC "leak" has not panned out.

New iMac? Nope.
New iPhone 5S? Nope.
Split-screen iOS? Nope.
Home automation? Nope.
New Apple TV software? Nope.
New Apple TV? Nope.
iWatch? Nope.
