Over the past few days, a number of sites have been reporting a rumor that AT&T may be preparing to launch MMS for its iPhone customers alongside iPhone OS 3.1 at next week's media event. In tracing the history of this rumor, however, MacRumors finds rather questionable sources for the claim.

Many sites are pointing to Know Your Mobile as a source for the rumor. That story, however, appears to be a slight embellishment of claims made by FSMdotCOM last week. FSMdotCOM's report, in turn, quotes a ModMyi user who noticed portions of MMS functionality in the iPhone OS 3.1 beta and who reportedly received word from an AT&T representative that MMS would be enabled by the end of the month in backing up a previous FSMdotCOM report from early August simply claiming that MMS functionality would be coming "later this summer" after the launch of iPhone OS 3.1.

Further confusing the issue is that the follow-up FSMdotCOM report citing the ModMyi claim was made in late August, and the end of the month has come and gone with no sign of MMS on AT&T. Other sites, however, didn't pick up on the story until September, and some have misinterpreted the report to be claiming an end-of-September timeframe.

In essence, all of the claims seem to stem from the original FSMdotCOM report from early August that simply noted what was already known or reasonably surmised.
The information i just got from my AT&T ninja , seems to be the same as "later this summer". He told me that AT&T will enable MMS for its users once the new iPhone firmware 3.1 will be released . Released date for the new firmware is not certain, all we know is that it will be released towards the end of August or early September.
This is not to discount the possibility of iPhone OS 3.1 being launched next week with MMS from AT&T coming along for the ride, as it is a reasonable guess based on Apple's introduction of iPhone OS 2.1 at last year's event and MMS being turned on by default in iPhone OS 3.1 betas, but claims of anything more than speculation appear to based on little solid information at this time.

Sorry but I find it hard to believe that AT&T could ever coordinate something like the MMS roll out with Apple.

That's not something Apple or AT&T would want to hold back if it's ready. Summer doesn't end until September 22. I'll be surprised if AT&T even manages to get MMS rolled out by then. Maybe they'll have an announcement to make about MMS, but it seems like a sore subject.

Seems untrue that 3.1 is needed. MMS works with all the other carriers and they don't have 3.1

Damn AT&T just get with it already.

MMS or not, AT&T is sooooo bad at everything--except being bad at everything; they are pretty good at that.

It's really just pathetic at this point that both MMS and tethering are not available. Every year that I've had the iPhone has been getting more and more frustrating with AT&T.

I know this doesn't have much to do with the substantive parts of this article, but for the mess of information surrounding this rumour, this MacRumors article was brilliantly researched and written. Thanks.

Please be true so that all of the "MMS coming to iPhone..." threads will be put to rest.

We can now just focus on the "iPhone coming to Verizon" threads 😛

Seriously, it is about damn time. Also what do you think the chances of Apple bringing some software features of the 3GS (like the voice dial, accessibility, and battery percentage) to all iPhones.

When my plan comes to an end I'd like to get that new Google phone. I am sick of AT&T pulling my chain.

Well I guess it is very likely that 3.1 will be released next week along with new iPod Touch, 2.1 was released on the same time frame if my memory serves me well. Hopefully they add some new features. My bet is that they are going to unlock the HD video playback, just like two years ago when they unlocked TV out on the original iPhone.

Without any deeper knowledge about the inner workings of the Carrier Profile, it seems like that could do lots of things. In Sweden MMS has been working since the release of 3.0. However tethering is only available with one carrier (Telia) and not with the other (Halebop) according to discussions. Let's say that AT&T simply disabled MMS in their Carrier Profile and the iPhone hides that options?

My theory for needing 3.1 is that it is an extra fee to get MMS and they know if they turn it on with 3.0 that people will be able to get it free. 3.1 could fix any holes of getting MMS for free.

That's exactly how it works.. so in the US it will be enabled by a new Carrier File, which will most likely (but doesn't have to be) shipped with iPhone OS 3.1

This rumour caught my eye as i received a text message from O2 this afternoon telling me to connect to iTunes for an update.

Exact wording was...

"Hello. Apple have released an important software update for your iPhone.

This will help manage data roaming abroad.

To check you've got the latest version, connect your iPhone to your computer as soon as you can. Click the 'Check for Update' button in iTunes.

For more information please visit shop.o2.co.uk/update"

No update was offered and the O2 link only mentions 3.0.1.

Sounds like these sources are just guessing. OS 3.1 has nothing to do with MMS for AT&T. Also MMS is not activated by default if it is not supported by your carrier.

Seeing as there has been no further betas for weeks now it is probably safe to presume that 3.1 will come along at the special event with the new iPod touch etc.

Again nothing to do with MMS.

It will be announced at the media event and released September 25th. It's easy to predict Apple these days.

I believe MMS shall be free on iPhone, just like other phones on AT&T with messaging plans..

Get a Life

You want MMS? Email the picture.

You want Tethering? Go get the free 3G Wireless card and pay for the monthly service. It won't be any cheaper on the iPhone.

They said by end of summer.....get a life.
