I'm one of those geeks that told people to wait for Windows 7 before buying a new machine.

The utility company I work for is the ultimate procrastinator of MS OS versions. They only recently updated over 1000 computers from Windows 2000 to XP. They are by-passing Vista completely. They are not going to be happy to see the XP to Windows 7 upgrade path that involves re-formatting 1000 computers and re-installing all applications! Ain't gonna happen. And I think this company is fairly typical of conservative companies that cannot afford to be attacked via the internet.

Nah, it's now or never. Four weeks away would mean the end of November which is just way too late for the holiday season and they surely don't want to miss out that! If it will happen this year then it's either today or in a week... not much time left for the crazed-up xmas shoppers... :D

 I suppose it's going to either happen, or not - really soon.

:D

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.

- Microsoft releases Windows 7 Thursday.

How best to rain on M$'s parade than to release awesome new Apple hardware and start the ad campaign Phil Schiller mentioned last week?

I hope you are right. Good insight.

They'll do it. We upgraded from 3.1 to NT and NT to XP. Both migrations were harder than XP to W7 will be.

You have to bear in mind that a lot of corporate purchasing links hardware to OS so they new units will come preinstalled with W7. We then just SMS - System Management Server, not texts! - out the apps. It's an easy process once you get your configs right.

actually, if you look at the price of all the macs on frys, they are most -$100. Could this be what will be announced tomorrow?

If only Linux wasn't so hard to friggin set up.

Of course, even if Apple does release new iMacs tomorrow / next week, the obvious question will be whether it's worth buying this new one or waiting for the newer Arrendale [sic] ones next year. :)
Well, the current rumor is that the new iMacs will get the quad-core i7 Mobile processor and Arrandale is a dual-core processor with a rather mediocre integrated graphics capability. Thus, Arrandale would be a step down from the Core i7 Mobile chips and Arrandale will probably have worse graphics performance than today's low-end, NVIDIA 9400M iMacs.

Most likely, Arrandale will be used in next year's MacBook Pro which should result in even better battery life which is a big focus with Apple's notebook computers. In any case, Arrandale will offer better CPU performance than today's Core 2 Duos and I would expect the MacBook Pros to offer switchable GPUs so that Arrandale's weak graphics shouldn't be an issue.

As for the possibility of using the Core i7 Mobile in a Mac notebook, I'm going to waffle on that since it might happen. However, it's probably instructive to look at the following graph [link] on AnandTech showing battery runtime on some high-end, desktop-replacement PC notebooks (one being a Core i7 Mobile system, the Clevo W870CU). The charts showing internet browsing and relative battery life include a 2008 MacBook Pro and these are real eye-openers for anyone hoping for a MacBook with a quad-core processor.

Certainly some notebooks with the Core i7 Mobile or quad-cores will have to do better than this or practically no one will be able to use them (as a mobile computer).

It takes one irresponsible and underfunded company to allow IE5 and 6. Those older browsers, I believe represent emerging markets with slower computers and with less threat to fraud due to less developed online shopping and finances. My boss would probably sack me if I breached company rules and went back to a browser that is such a threat to confidential information. Or at least I would get told off.

My employer's clients are all US hospitals and clinics. None of them are smaller than 100 beds, and most are much larger. Out of approximately 200 different facilities that we deal with, 100% of them are still using IE6. (Much to my chagrin as a web programmer.) It has to do with HIPAA compliance and hundreds of thousands of lines of code that require IE6 to run. Unfortunately, IE6 isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

So there's your "irresponsible and underfunded" companies right there.

I'd call the HIPAA group to be irresponsible.

MUCH needed:

- Much lighter (and smaller) Mac. 400 to 600 g or so (as light as possible). 5 to 7-inch screen or so. Call it a netbook, tablet or whatever. Video-out and USB2 ports for presentations.

- Headless small Mac. Call it miniTOWER, Mac mini on steroids or whatever. Intel Quad core inside and at least two Firewire 800 ports.

- Matte (not glossy) displays, iMac and laptops. Eye health and productivity is first!

What is Apple waiting? They will sell millions.

Very informative link. I had no idea of the difference in battery life. The MBP is very impressive in those charts. For me, since a laptop is not my primary machine, battery life would trump moderate performance gain.

I'd like to see a redesigned Mac Mini, it's had the same design since it was first introduced what 5 years ago?

Also, Apple, put some decent sized hard drives in your laptops, 160GB in a laptop sold as a "pro" model for £900 is obscene. £199 netbooks have 160GB hard drives.

Hi guys, I don't know if it's been said yet, but I was in Amsterdam over the weekend and their big Apple store said they didn't have any Mighty Mice, nor any Apple In Earphones.

The manager said it's been like that for weeks/months, so he thinks by this month new gear is coming in. So let's hope :) :apple:

That makes alot of sense. Windows 7 has got nothing but positive press. Apple needs to make a move... now..

Earthahattering qould be sub $999 headless mac pros running i7 chips, quad in iMacs, esata and express slots on all devices mac pros price cut at 25%, all machines hVe really good GPU, dvr for apple tv, hdmi on all products and flAsh for all iPhone while catering to proSumers . This would be earth shattering.

Peace.

They just reported their most profitable quarter ever - I cant see them falling over themselves to release something that is not the customer experience they want (ie, the netbook).

Not saying it wont happen, just that there is no rush as far as they are concerned, things are going fine.

Agreed on matte displays however, not because they will sell more, just because some people would prefer it, and if you are really worried about your customers experience shouldn't you provide the option.
