I'll offer the first: why do you need quad core? Are you actually doing high-end stuff, or are you just questioning for the sake of questioning?
Well, to me, it was unexpected to drop FW, especially when they put it back for the 13" Unibody (Pro designation not withstanding).
Oh well, either way, I'm not buying the new one. It does look nice though.
I'm just happy that the Airport Extreme didn't get updated. I just bought one 3 days ago.

ON top of that there are towers with 8 gigs of ram standard, under $1k. Correct me if I'm wrong Eidorian.

6-8 GB with 1 TB hard drives.
Don't forget a quad core and a monitor too. Apple is the home of the > US$1,000 computer.

the macbook also got a speed bump and has ddr3 as well now.
Might be a mistake? I'm not sure, but http://www.apple.com/uk/magicmouse/ shows the US price. And on the MacBook page it says "Still £799", when clearly it wasn't last time.
My response is - what are you actually doing with it? Most people think they need the latest and greatest, but they don't have any software that takes advantage of 4 cores efficiently. They just think it will make their games or Firefox faster than the next guy. As a computer engineer and someone who knows more than a little bit about what's going on inside, I have to laugh a little bit when average joe gets upset because his quad core machine doesn't boot XP in 500ms.
