this sucks , because samsung note 8 was leaked and according to the leak it has touch id on the front display , imagen apple release aphone with touch id on the back !

They are hoping to have the tech right by the Note 8, it's not a given yet that it will have touch ID in the screen. It was planned to be on the S8 as well, but they couldn't get it working well enough in time, that's why the sensor is on the back, it was a last minute change so the phone still had touch ID without delaying release. It's also why it's where it is, that was the only spot they could put it without a major redesign of the internals.

Whether or not Apple get things sorted for the next iPhone remains to be seen. Apparently they are having issues with their version of touch ID in the screen too, thus the talk of the sensor being on the back.

Yeah, that article is here: https://www.macrumors.com/2017/04/12/apple-struggling-with-touch-id-under-display/

Seems like the issue is due to low manufacturing yield. They're not just going to toss out this design, so I'm guessing if they're still having issues that they're still going to announce the iPhone, but there will be a longer delay than previous years. Only time will tell.

Not a big fan of facial recognition in phones either, especially with all the reports of people unlocking phones by just using someone's picture.

It's definitely software that's going to require a lot of improving. At this point, I don't think phone manufacturers are taking it that serious with facial recognition, unless Apple does something different, which we all know how they treat their security With caution.

This would be a no-go.
How to unlock it while it's sitting on a desk?
More importantly: How to unlock it in the car?

Ah, right, you say: Siri!
In my experience, Siri is no use more often than she is.
Especially if you're talking to her in other languages than English.
She's absolutely terrible in German for example.

Actually, they will be adding a touch sensor dongle that plugs into the lightning port.

When in doubt, create a dongle.

I would actually rather have this than on the back! At least I can route it to the front of the display and glue it on there.

My plan was to upgrade from 6s+ to the 8, hearing about delays, and scarcity on release, and touch id not integrated, and all that stuff. I don't know if I really want to go for a 'gen 1' iPhone 8, and maybe wait for the 8s to solve all that.

I am excited to play with the 8, but the samsung has set a standard for me now in regards to the screen design. *and that's about it* .. I am hoping holding the iPhone 8 will make me bleed money - physically holding it. Not just a rendered picture on their site.

But, eh, yeah, I really couldn't care less about iris scanning or face photo unlock, and all that stuff. I want touch id, and I don't want anything on the back. I want a slick wrap on the back to make it appear as '1' flush flat back, with a cam on it. And that's it. I don't need it to slip out of my hands, or be difficult to use while I am on my bike, etc. I don't want accidental unlocks when I put my hand in my pocket and the finger slips over the back. (I am so used to ignoring the smooth side (front where touch id is) becuase it unlocks so fast.

Maybe it's worth to spend another year with this 6s+ , use the money to upgrade something on the imac 2017 edition, if they decide to release a worthy imac, and then save in 2018 for the 8s update instead.

Face recognition and unlock better have a 270 degree camera and some ungodly AI for me to consider it a replacement for touchid.

It has to know its me speaking from across the room while laying on the table.

Epic fail if true. However just don't see it myself.
If these supposed technical hurdles cannot be overcome real soon, and it means the difference between making or not making the important holiday shopping season, there's no doubt in my mind Tim will put the sensor on the back for this year, leaving us yet another reason to upgrade next year again to iPhone9 or whatever, where that persnickety little TouchId problem will magically have been solved.

IIRC, Apple says Touch Id only gives a false positive once in 50,000 tries. Perhaps facial recognition cannot be as safe, but I think iris recognition easily matches or beats that. So maybe iris instead?

Wait a second. Touch Id doesn't work from across the room either :)

Fingerprint sensor being on the back is the sole reason I didn't buy the Google Pixel and haven't bought the Galaxy S8.

It doesn't make sense to me and if the iPhone has it placed on the back, that really is a sign that Apple are just following the crowd (read: Samsung) rather than chiselling out their own path.

However if there is facial recognition for login then actually this issue is immediately resolved.
It would be much safer too as there would be no need to touch the phone!

Sure, better to have to weirdly position your head in front of the camera while driving is safer. ;)

But half of what Siri can do requires me to unlock the phone. For facial/iris to be an upgrade it better work across a few meters. Or else we will unlock as usual and just do the task ourselves. Doesn't matter if its on the back now when I have to have it up front in my face for 1-2 seconds. Can easily find touchid on the back in the same time.

This is a test of Tim Cook statement that a Steve Jobs' DNA still permeates Apple. Imagine the meeting where they tell Jobs that keeping Touch ID on the front where it needs to be is too hard. Everyone would walk out quiet and sweating.

From a practical standpoint, touch ID on the back just doesn't work. For one, you won't be able to unlock the phone while it's sitting on your desk, which immediately takes away 50% of your unlock options. Also, a case would have to have a cutout on the rear to accommodate, adding to the phone's vulnerability. Then there's the issue with car mounts - I often unlock while it's clipped into its dash mount to access the maps. (While stationary, of course). All seems like a step back.

You'd just unlock it by looking at the camera, but would still have to take sunnies off and hope that iris scanning works from that distance.

What distance does iris scanning work at?

Edit: supposedly they can work metres away so a fine solution

It wont happen in my opinion
There's a variety of devices on the market now where the touch id is on the back of the phone and each time they've been called out as clumsy, unatural and bad design decisions.
Even if the front-facing unlock feature of facial recognition is implemented, this will annoy people because sometimes people arent using their phones with it directly held up at their face

You type in your passcode.

It's already been done on GOOGLE'S phone, it's not going to be done to the iPhone. And if it is no thanks, I'll switch because it's an absolute horrible design and if Apple puts it in the next iPhone it's an obvious 100% copy of android... bad idea all around.

If they actually introduce wireless charging with it I'll be happy, otherwise they're just wasting time.
