this sucks , because samsung note 8 was leaked and according to the leak it has touch id on the front display , imagen apple release aphone with touch id on the back !
Yeah, that article is here: https://www.macrumors.com/2017/04/12/apple-struggling-with-touch-id-under-display/Apparently they are having issues with their version of touch ID in the screen too, thus the talk of the sensor being on the back.
Not a big fan of facial recognition in phones either, especially with all the reports of people unlocking phones by just using someone's picture.
Actually, they will be adding a touch sensor dongle that plugs into the lightning port.
When in doubt, create a dongle.
Me too, to be quite honest. Anywhere but the back.I would actually rather have this than on the back! At least I can route it to the front of the display and glue it on there.
If these supposed technical hurdles cannot be overcome real soon, and it means the difference between making or not making the important holiday shopping season, there's no doubt in my mind Tim will put the sensor on the back for this year, leaving us yet another reason to upgrade next year again to iPhone9 or whatever, where that persnickety little TouchId problem will magically have been solved.Epic fail if true. However just don't see it myself.
Face recognition and unlock better have a 270 degree camera and some ungodly AI for me to consider it a replacement for touchid.
It has to know its me speaking from across the room while laying on the table.
However if there is facial recognition for login then actually this issue is immediately resolved.
It would be much safer too as there would be no need to touch the phone!
I rather want it in the power button since you can access it when the phone is laying on a table or on a car mountWhat if the Apple logo is the Touch ID?
Some would argue that Apple limiting car use to Siri only is a good thing. This would be a ridiculous change, especially for car use. :/
IIRC, Apple says Touch Id only gives a false positive once in 50,000 tries. Perhaps facial recognition cannot be as safe, but I think iris recognition easily matches or beats that. So maybe iris instead?
Wait a second. Touch Id doesn't work from across the room either![]()
From a practical standpoint, touch ID on the back just doesn't work. For one, you won't be able to unlock the phone while it's sitting on your desk, which immediately takes away 50% of your unlock options. Also, a case would have to have a cutout on the rear to accommodate, adding to the phone's vulnerability. Then there's the issue with car mounts - I often unlock while it's clipped into its dash mount to access the maps. (While stationary, of course). All seems like a step back.
This would be a no-go.
How to unlock it while it's sitting on a desk?
More importantly: How to unlock it in the car?
Ah, right, you say: Siri!
In my experience, Siri is no use more often than she is.
Especially if you're talking to her in other languages than English.
She's absolutely terrible in German for example.
