Be interesting to see if the Note 8 can win the race to the under screen fingerprint sensor as that would be a major coup for Samsung this Fall.

Do you really think Apple under Steve Jobs would turn out something that doesn't work the way it was planned? They'd wait until next year. Sure the bigger screen and wireless and fast charging would be upgrades as would facial recognition, but all that equates to equalling what will be a 6 month old S8 design and features with a differently placed fingerprint sensor.

However, with the current design already woefully behind the competition and Ive having an army of industrial designers at their disposal, nevermind all their other resources, Apple also can't justify releasing only a 7s with upgraded internals for another entire year, as the flagship.
Speculating, but I think Steve would of had a back up, I phone 7s with all the new features and waited to get it all right before releasing.

Tbh if Apple puts Touch ID on the back, I'd be alright with it. I've already gotten used to it on my S8+ to that point that by the time the iPhone does drop, it'll probably feel weird for me to use the fingerprint sensor on the front. Not really that big of a deal tbh. Folks will adapt

Why don't they just keep the home button until they overcome whatever obstacles they're facing. An edge-to-edge screen is the least of my concerns in life right now.

I love Apple but the past few years of Apple releases have taught me that if there's two different rumors in circulation (one being an optimistic & exciting rumor, the other being the safe option), the less exciting one is probably going to end up in the final product. In this case, Touch ID integrated into the display is the exciting and optimistic option which is why I'm expecting the iPhone 8 to release with Touch ID on the back.

I would not trust any facial software these days. Folks are by passing that form by putting a picture of the persons face in front of the phone to unlock it.

Also many people out there wear detailed makeup, like doing contouring and end up looking like a big nose hag to Michael Jackson nose. Kim Kardashian does not look the same without her makeup. How will facial recognition work when they remove that mask of makeup?

agreed.
hell, my iPhone has a hard enough time reading a Barcode or QR code if i don't hold it EXACTLY in the right position. how am i going to trust my device to remember and accurately determine every single feature of my face?
and GoodLuck if you are the type to dress up on halloween or have a career in Professional Cosplay/Make-up artistry/Special effects, and/or like me could possibly have new editions of Body Mods/Peircings/tattoos on your face.

Not a big fan of facial recognition in phones either, especially with all the reports of people unlocking phones by just using someone's picture.

He didn't take away functionality. He changed the mechanism to get the same functionality (charging).

I never stated functionality was taken away. Regardless, it was the transition during that time frame where the Lightning cable was not full accepted yet. It takes time to transition from a previous iteration to a new one, especially when you have investments in cables and various devices.

It looks like a dated Galaxy S8, although that doesn't come as a surprise since every iPhone after the iPhone 5/5s looks terrible. I switched from the iPhone 7 to S8 and it's one of the best decisions I ever made (smartphone wise).
I'm not willing to make that leap. Have 1 friend with one and the screen looks ok other than the stupid top and bottom chin. It would take something major to get me away from my Mac and iPhone combo and an "almost infinity" screen is not enough to do it

this sucks , because samsung note 8 was leaked and according to the leak it has touch id on the front display , imagen apple release aphone with touch id on the back !

That vertical camera configuration is going to take some getting used to. Because it's ugly. Also, I use a dashboard mount in my car for my iPhone. If that finger print sensor is in the back it's going to make it awkward to use my phone while moving. It's a step backward in usability.

Why are you accessing your phone whilst the car is moving? Surely that is illegal and dangerous?

I wouldn't be using that as a use case for keeping the touch ID on the front of the phone - there are many better reasons for keeping it on the front.

No, Tim, just no. Better make it right and in smaller quantities than place touch ID on the back. You'll turn into another Samsung by doing that and what's worse, this or early next year Samsung will release a phone with sensor embedded under the screen.

You already couldn't produce a design for iPhone 8 that Xiaomi just successfuly released, and now that? God, where's Scott Forstall... Board of directors should hire him back as CEO.

It will be on the back and you'll like it.
Then the 2018 iPhone will have it on front and you'll like that as well.

Whatever Big Apple feeds you, even if it's Soylent Green: You'll Like It!

I wouldn't go that far, but yes: Cook as CEO was a major mistake, he's a bean counter (excellent one at that, no doubt), but not CEO material. They have run past the pipeline set forth by Jobs and are lost at sea; the new MBP for example is atrocious, and no one that I know that has bought one likes it.

With a depth of 7.69mm, the iPhone 8 would be just a hair thicker than the iPhone 5s, if the dimensions CLSA lists prove to be accurate.

Wait, if this phone is closer to the SE in thickness, does it *need* a camera bump? If this was my 10th anniversary phone, I'd want a smooth front and back.

What's the use of complaining about the touch id's location ??? Even if Apple came out with one on the side, most of you on here will be the first to get on line to buy one! SMH.

I've had every iPhone until the 6. I hated the size and I'm glad they came out with the iPhone SE. I still use that now. I can't really think of much more that I would want from a phone. I guess for the SE you could slightly reduce the bezels. I like a physical home button though. I like a physical mute switch. I think a bland piece of glass is maybe cool to look at but not very functional. Same with no bezels. The main thing I really care about is the camera, battery, GPS + other sensors. Size wise the SE is perfect for a phone IMO. The flat sides are even cool because you can balance the phone on them.

It's a non-starter. Apple release new iPhones every year, but the pipeline is deeper than that.
There's no pipeline, Cook is lost. There were numerous rumors about different designs being tested till now. That's too late already and production will be delayed. We had 3 iPhone 6 designs in a row, and will get a 4th one this year alongside iPhone 8. Hardly a pipeline. Same with Macs, not updated in years(!). Mac Pro just was started being redesigned few weeks ago after 4 years of silence. Not a pipeline at all.

While other companies stamp new products (new, not just internally upgraded!) every year. Amazon released 3 Echo products and soon will get out a 4th one with a touch screen and camera. While Apple is still working on the simple audio-only assistant.
Microsoft released Surface Book, Surface Studio, both highly innovative and a more classic notebook recently. We got a Macbook with a touchbar. Doesn't look like a pipeline at all. Something chaotic and not well thought out.

Apple doesnt seem to be that creative lately. Its a little too business as usual. They are copying the competition i stead of leading.
