I'll quadriple, quintuple, megatuple the hope for an updated remote. That crap designed by Jony Ive and compnay was, well, crap.

I still buy original apple tv remotes (as spares) to control my apple tv 4k boxes, because they are SO much easier to use.

Note to Apple: Having REAL buttons isn't gonna give me Covid, Cancer, Aids, or whatever the hell else you think the problem with real buttons is.
Just make it usable. Stop trying to re-invent the wheel for gods sake.

Yes yes yes 1000x yes.

I was on Apple TV for years, then I moved to Fire TV and I've been pretty happy. I'd love to try switching back from Fire TV just to be on an Apple product, just because so much of my other stuff is Apple...but out of principle I'm not going to do it until there's a better remote. Paying a premium for an Apple product with an absolutely AWFUL means of controlling it is just not something I'm going to do again.

Well you can't install apps and games from the Apple Store on third party TVs if that's something you're into. Otherwise there's not much of a need anymore, except maybe the nicer user interface on the Apple TV.
Why would I want to do that on a PlayStation or Xbox? Yeah....let’s put DOOM Eternal down to play “Alba: A Wildfire Adventure”

This time around Apple really need to be able to bring in AAA console games at a minimum of PS4 quality. If they can nearly match a PS5 they are laughing. If they don’t do this, I’m seriously beginning to wonder what the strategy is for Apple TV because for just a streaming box, even a good one, how can that compete against in-built services on both modern TV and console devices going forward for the next couple of years?
Apple has had hardware capable of gaming for year (Mac anyone?). They have never been seen as a serious gaming platforms and likely never will. AAA are being developed for x86/64 hardware, unless it is Nintendo....

While we're at it, having a real remote, or real buttons, or another way of connecting to the HomePod would be something they should do too.

I got a HomePod for xmas last year and once I saw it had no bluetooth, no audio input of any sort, and the only real way to control it was with Siri ... that crap was wrapped up and sent back to the store.

Apple thinks they're being so clever by removing standard, functional features. When I see that, I just ay "F-U Apple" and don't buy it.

But wouldn't that work with a good AVR as well?
Hhmm, currently I'm depending on a good player like VLC or Infuse from the Apple TV app store to watch large movies without judder. With Apple TV 4K and 1 Gbit/s Ethernet I feel like being just at the edge where it still works. A new Apple TV with 10 GBit/s would be the reason to switch my home network and NAS to 10 GBit/s (CAT7 inhouse wiring is already in place).
I always thought, an AVR improves sound but not video signals, does it? Is there anything comparable to the A10X in an AVR? Don't think so. For sound, I use a network streaming DAC connected to loudspeakers which sounds nice.

Ummmm A12 Bionic is faster in single and multicore performance than A10X. A11 Bionic is on par with A10X at least for multicore
Keep in mind, the article is talking about a gaming-focused ATV, and the GPU performance would play a big part in that:
Fudge added that Apple is planning to bring console-quality games to its Apple Arcade service that may not work with existing Apple TV models.

For GPU performance, the A10X is about on par with the A12 in the benchmarks. So, benchmarks alone show that the A12 isn't really a decent upgraded over the A10X when it comes to graphical performance.

Also, on MR developers have commented that the A10X with its 12 GPU cores actually has higher sustained real world GPU performance than the newer A12 with the 4 GPU cores.

I’m confused. The fire tv remote is an archaic unreliable piece of hardware. Meanwhile no one has developed an alternative to the Apple TV remote that is even partially as good. The Apple remote doesn’t just feel premium it allows you to navigate large collections with ease. I just purchased my fifth Apple TV to give as a gift because nothing else comes close to the performance or ease of use at such a low price. Heck, even if you are willing to spend more I doubt you could find a remote that improves the experience.

At some point it has to become cheaper to produce the newer A12 than make the older, bigger A10X.
I really think that this is the real reason why there might be an A12 ATV.

It has nothing to do with performance, and more to do with bottomline.

Before anyone gets too excited, keep in mind that these same rumors were popping up (and a lot more often) back in 2014 and 2015 about what ended up being the Apple TV 4 (HD).

What we ended up getting was only an A8 (not and A8X or A9X), a 200MB static storage limit for apps, and a requirement for developers that they must use the Siri Remote for games. All of which basically killed any momentum for gaming on the ATV.

So the rumors for a device that was capable of console quality games ended up being false back then.

Hopefully the current rumors are correct, but I won't get my hopes up.

In his Fully Charged newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman today briefly reiterated that Apple plans to release a new Apple TV with a stronger gaming focus, an updated remote, and a new processor at some point next year.

Gurman has previously indicated that Apple is working on a new remote with Find My-like capabilities, which would make it easier to find when misplaced. As part of the gaming focus, there have also been rumors that Apple may introduce a dedicated gaming controller for the Apple TV, but it remains unclear what it would look like.

Earlier this year, an anonymous leaker known as "Fudge" on Twitter indicated that Apple has prototyped new Apple TV models with variants of the A12 and A14 chips for faster performance; if true, it's unclear if Apple will ultimately settle on one chip or release two different models. Fudge added that Apple is planning to bring console-quality games to its Apple Arcade service that may not work with existing Apple TV models.

The new Apple TV is also rumored to have higher 64GB and 128GB storage capacity options, compared to 32GB and 64GB for the current Apple TV 4K model.

All of these potential features have been rumored several times by now, and the Apple TV 4K was released over three years ago, so odds are looking good for a new Apple TV next year. Keep an eye on our Apple TV roundup linked below for the latest rumors.

How can you be happy with an amazon product? You get so much more from an appletv. If you have an iPhone. quick controls and the remote app is amazing. The Alexa app for their devices is garbage. But if you only care about something for its remote then have at it. I use airplay everyday so it’s a necessity for me having it.

Im completely fine with the appletv remote. I like how simple it is. How it doesn’t have a stupid Netflix button that I always seem to press on accident on other remotes. If apple can put the tech they did inside their Magic Trackpad into the remote so it doesn’t really click anymore it would be much better. They just need to work on the animations on the appletv and thats why scrolling can somehow be difficult for some people. Using a button gets rid of that animation and skips ahead one click. I wouldn’t even mind them adding a one tap on the corners to go one time ahead at a time. With a small amount of haptic feedback it could work much better than the current remote that actually is a physically moving touch pad.

Just looked what Stadia is, but hmm, they could implement this in their Arcade service and make it bigger.
According to Apple's own AppStore rules you are only allowed to stream games that are also available separately in the AppStore. That is not feasible for streaming services and most of the AAA titles on Stadia and other services will never be on the AppStore. So if Apple want to implement this themselves and "make it bigger" they have to allow all other streaming platforms onto the AppStore as well. Unfortunately I don't see this happen.

Apple TV Pro version with M1, 128 GB (is sufficient), HDMI 2.1 AND 10GBASE-T Ethernet. PLEASE, Apple, PLEASE!!
Just buy a Mac mini when they offer a HDMI 2.1 interface. (currently its HDMI 2.0) The M1 based mini is already a good HT computer. The Apple TV will never have same I/O, storage capacity that the M1 Mac mini possesses and price it as cheap as $199. ;)

Good point, thought about this. But then I have a MacOS user interface for selecting movies or pictures, which is uncomfortable compared to the apps provided by the TV OS from the Apple TV - despite the terrible handling of the bad remote. Don't like using a bluetooth keyboard or anything like this when sitting on the couch watching TV ...

I would like a few dead simple feature that Apple will never implent properly.
- Organize My Content Library (Music, Movies, Podcasts) how I want them.
- Select Content for Offline Viewing.
- Better Remote, obviously
- Working Search (I don't know about you, but whatever I search for returns unrelated results)

... and ...

Whoever disigned the horizontal on-screen keyboard with awkward case change and special character selection should work on a completely seperate project not related to any UI/UX or uusability.
