A better gaming controller won't fix the fact that developers have enough of an uphill climb porting AAA titles to Apple Silicon SoCs and have since their inception (that's why the 4K Apple TV has console quality graphics but a dearth of console quality games in the tvOS App Store). It's not like current support for PS4 and XBox One controllers hurts the effort at all.

Requesting Apple TV 8K 🙃
That would be awesome but we are not there yet and considering they will be releasing another upgrade in another year or two after the current unit is upgraded. It doesn't make sense.

Because people will complain. When 8K becomes mainstream release one especially if there are codecs that required royalties to be paid in the interim for 8K.

Yes please!

I really need more storage. I would like 256GB, but with the Apple-tax on storage, who knows how much that ATV would cost.

If it is just an A12, performance wise, it is on par with the current A10X.

I really hope it isn't the A12.
Ummmm A12 Bionic is faster in single and multicore performance than A10X. A11 Bionic is on par with A10X at least for multicore

I am probably a bit senile , but isn't the PS5 has less then 1TB ? fast storage is very expensive (what Apple uses).
The PS5 is $400 and comes with 825GB of storage. Apple charges $400 to increase the storage on a Mac Mini by 750GB from 250GB to 1000GB. So for $400 Sony gives you more storage and adds a CPU, GPU, memory, PSU, case, ports, and controller for free.

I don’t think Apple wants to compete with PlayStation or Xbox though. Apple sells products at 3x the cost to make them. Sony and Microsoft sell consoles at a loss. Apple either has to sell Apple TV under $200 or add a must have feature to justify a price on par with consoles.

Really hope they are putting an audio out back in like they used to have. Not being able to separate audio and video really limits the use cases with projectors and amplifiers.
You can separate the audio to S/PDIF using an HDMI audio extractor. However, there will be problems with audio sync, since Apple TV does not have an audio delay setting. A projector will introduce a noticeable delay to the video, and Apple TV cannot compensate for that. The “wireless audio sync” feature does nothing to sync audio and video in a setup like this.

The Apple TV should just come with an S/PDIF output, and a manual audio delay adjustment.

Uh no. A14 is designed for iOS/iPadOS, and tvOS. The M1 is designed to run MacOS such as in the Mac mini, MacBook Air/ PowerBook Pro 13". The M1 Mac Mini can readily serve as a HT computer since it has a HDMI output. :)

Apple made MacOS for the M1 and you can run iOS apps on the M1 too.
Are you telling me that Apple couldn't make a tvOS run on an M1 if they wanted to?

Of course, "if they wanted to" is key here. This would certainly get them to game console level, assuming they actually want that.

They've been using the Axx chips because that's what they had, now they have the M1. Plus, let's remember that Apple has not released a new model of an Apple TV of the same resolution (as the previous model) without a major redesign, so it's not impossible (if they follow that pattern).

(They did a rev. Aon the 3rd generation 1080p AppleTV, but it wasn't released as a new product, they stopped using disabled dual-core chips and replaced them with single-core chip [that I'd guess were cheaper] and I think it got a new wifi or Bluetooth update for something peer-to-peer-ish like AirPlay and/or remotes)

The world has moved on from optical audio. having two hdmi outs would be nice but that’s what a hdmi switcher is for. I use my appletv in my main receiver and bedroom receiver with a single cable run.

I don't get the fuss about storage. I got an ATV 4K a couple weeks ago after there wasn't an update with the AirPods announcement, and I love it. I got the base 32GB model because, well, I'm not interested in gaming on it. I got it because I wanted a streaming device that integrates seamlessly into the rest of my Apple ecosystem, and the only apps I put on it are streaming services and YouTube, which take very little space.

I also don't have any complaints about the remote, the only thing that annoys me remote-wise is the iOS Control Center software remote because it can't have a physical click on the trackpad part.

Spatial audio would be a great addition. Airpod Pro's and Max users would benefit. I would also like a return of an optical audio output. It will never happen, but that's on my list as well.
I would also like the return of an optical audio output. It bothers me to no end that when I try and incorporate my entertainment system speakers via ATV through airplay, the tv has to be on. Such a waste.

If they update it to an A14 it should dual boot macOS, but then it would be a Mac mini for a fraction of the price so they'll never do that.

The surround world has moved on due to bandwidth, yet the stereo world continues to use it. I would be fine with one normal HDMI and one ARC.

Why bother? For the tiny fraction of people who want a separate audio feed, plenty of companies sell HDMI audio extractors on Amazon and elsewhere, that can copy out the audio as Toslink or coax digital. Why add another jack that 95% of the customers will never use?
Because nobody wants another box and another wall wart?

I hope they add support for exact 24.000 fps videos. Otherwise the auto refresh rate works great. On my 100" projected screen every motion artifact is painful.

Sorry spdif/toslink is not comming back, and you lose the ne hdeff audio formats any way, here is a sugested setup ( all interdevice links are hdmi 2.1. Atv4k-0->sorround amp-> hdmi swich /splitter ( outputs tv,projector. The splitter is only necesery if you have both tv and projector in the save room ) added bones: by using the reciever as the hdmi switch audio and video is switch at the same time and you avoid an extra switch ( one less thing to fail). The reason for the death of the saparated digital audio outpot is lack of copy orotection, holywood is so scared about us stealing their audio tracks
I understand these video use cases, they are best served by HDMI switching via TV (most people) or AV receiver (home theater). However I was also thinking about hifi stereo people who want to stream mostly audio.

Hope this is true, have been holding out for quite a while. If it is true, this will be a good reason to update my 10-year old Samsung TV!
Same I have not updated our 6 year old apple TV, because i was sure it would come this September, and i wanted the use of home automation - that i need a new Apple TV or the apple speaker(not gona happen).

In the mean time i bought a Samsung "The frame" TV - and for the first of all kudos to Samsing - when i plugged in the hdmi to the Apple TV, it just found it, and wrote on screen "Apple Tv found - your samsung remote now work with your apple tv" - this is a huge deal since the Samsung remote is not IR - so the apple tv moved into my cupboard.

then i tried Netflix and HBO app on the samsung TV - its faster, more intuitive, and it plays trailers - the native app that came with my tv is WAY better than the app for Apple TV(6 year old )

- so instead of getting a media center (Apple TV ) - im now stuck with the only added value it have for me is the home automation aspect - and REALLY a 3 year update cycle ?

Not demanding a brand new record setting new product every year, but a minor bump in processor would be nice, every year. - but for now you are not getting my money (well not more of them just got the new iPhone 12 pro max, and the new M1 mac mini)

Siri is your friend here. It's not perfect, but it does seem to be listening specifically for movie and TV titles, and is usually fairly accurate. I can generally hit the mic button on the remote, say "What We Do In The Shadows" and be taken immediately to a screen that offers me a few viewing options -- including Hulu, the one I want. Again, not perfect but in a lot of cases a hell of a lot better than rummaging through whatever idiosyncratic design a particular app has.
Siri is not my friend. It’s not available in Belgium so the smart remote is not smart at all over here. (while Siri does work in our three languages on iOS).

Furthermore, none of my apps are integrated with Search or the TV app. Even the ones from the US. It’s all a halfbakken mess on international markets. Maybe they should no longer sell it here, like the HomePod, if they’re not willing to invest in it.

New controller included with ATV- yaas please.
Would like to see bigger storage (1TB?)
