If the dummy’s thickness is accurate, are you guys gonna use protective cases? TPU cases which are the ones that actually protect the device if it falls are quite thick, they’d probably add around 3mm to the thickness

I’m thinking I’d just use a very slim case, granted it wouldn't provide any protection from the drop impact, but it would protect it from scratches and dust, and still be thin
I'm planning on using a silicone case with a kickstand.

No need for us to get animated over a few millimetres, I’ve made plenty of mistakes myself trying to figure this thing out … that’s what the edit button is for 😎

I suspect ZoneofTech is simply doubling the closed width which includes the hinge. But when opened the hinge slides into the device, so will be less.

Perhaps these Youtube channels measuring it don't have vernier calipers that measure over 150mm, so they haven't measured the whole width accurately.

That would make the width open 164.4mm

Now we need to know the bezel size

Found this video about the Huawei Pura X Max

What’s interesting is that he also has the iPhone Ultra dummy and he showed that the iPhone is a bit narrower and shorter than the Pura, and the iPhone is a tad bit thinner

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the thickness of this dummy model might not be entirely correct. I've seen 11.2 to 11mm just in the models floating around. Not too much of a stretch to think the tolerance of these models might contribute to a thicker model than the rumors suggest. My guess is that the production model might be in the 9.5-9.8mm range folded. That would only represent a .3mm difference in thickness for each half (4.9mm vs 5.2mm seen in one of the videos) on the low end.

Also interesting that the newer models have a camera flash now with a different arrangement than previous models.

I don’t think that would be the case since this dummy’s purpose is for case manufacturers to make cases

11 and 11.2 are pretty much the same so it could be difference from the measurement equipment

Also the thickness makes sense for the rumored battery size

For example, the z fold wide which will be thinner (9.8mm) will have 4800mah battery, which is a lot less than the rumored iPhone battery

Also I’m hoping that with this thickness they might have added magsafe

Anyway I personally don’t mind a thickness of 11mm folded, because when I measured the thickness of my current iPhone 11 Pro Max WITH THE CASE, it turned out to be 11mm haha

Just gotta use a thin case for the fold and I’ll be good, hopefully it won’t be too heavy

Everyone hated on Samsung's folds until this last generation for being too thick. Also at least with durability concerns foldables are the one phone you want a thicker case on it.

So I would fully agree with you if this was a normal slab phone model but... This is a folding phone with a mock up hinge so the tolerance of the dummy hinge plays a part in the folded thickness measurement. If we apply the logic to both halves of the phone, then 4.9 vs 5.2 mm is essentially the same for this mock up's intended purpose. I can see a scenario where both the rumors and this dummy model are true and represent the phone as a whole.

That being said, I'd have to agree that is likely not going to be as thin as the rumors suggested. With this form factor, thickness won't play as big of a role in the pocket feel of the device as something like the galaxy fold 7. 9.8mm vs 11mm likely feels identical in the pocket/hand with this short square folded design.

There were other factors that contributed to the previous galaxy folds lack of interest. Durability, battery life, outer screen size, etc...

Cheers! It's good to see Youtube channels taking different measurements that others missed, to get a broader picture.

Today I've been doing a little tinkering to match these dummy models and eyeballed the camera bump and lens thickness. My estimation was 16.9mm as opposed to 16.57mm measured in this Unbox Therapy vid, so not too bad.

Also if it really is going to have a black camera bump as rumoured and also be titanium, I've convinced myself that it could indeed have an iPhone X aesthetic, with polished glass and a little chrome edge around the bump - rather than being a straight clone of the iPhone Air.

The test image below is a tweak to what I was previously thinking back in Feb. The chrome edge could use the same profile as the glass to match the dummy models.

The purple colour of these 18 Pros flanking it is also the rumoured Pantone colour from the other day.

Great render as always! I am really curious to see if they make the white color rounded near corner on the hinge side like here or if they fill the color to the edge. I personally hope they fill it towards the edges.

Regarding the thickness, I really hope it is thinner than 10mm, but I think the dummies might actually be correct! What might have gone wrong with the rumours (less than 5mm when opened) is that I saw in one of the dummy videos that they measured the thickness when opened and measured from the middle of the screen. I think it was 5mm or less. But because a foldable always has a slightly raised bezel, the thickness when the screen is folded is not the 5mm x 2, but the (5mm x 2) + (0.5mm raised edges x 2). That would explain the discrepancy between the rumoured 9-10mm and the dummies 11mm.

I'm leaning more towards a Max version at some point.
Maybe. Depends on sales of this one.
I also think they will do a tri-fold in, say, 2-3 years.
I think unlikely, but again it depends on the success of their first foldable. But the other thing Apple needs is repair-return numbers - if a 1-hinge device is constantly needing repairs (for either product reliability or customer miss-use), they’d be less likely to release an even more fragile 2-hinge device.

I get that, but I'm not talking about lack of interest or sales. People were constantly making fun of them for being too thick, even with the fold 6 (12.1mm). Everyone said that was too thick for foldable and they needed to be thinner, they were one of the last brands to release a thinner foldable.

We should be 3 months away now from Apple announcing the iPhone keynote date.

I get a little anxious when I see these reports about potential snags in production. But I'm going to stay optimistic until further notice.

Cool that we are now getting cases leaked as well. I hope to find one this fall that is both silicone and with a kickstand. 🙂

I was sick of content creators stating wrong screen size in their iPhone Ultra dummy videos (they’re all saying 7.8” which is the initial screen leak, not the same as the dummy in their hands!), so I decided to get my hands on one.

What about thickness? Kinda important measurement

Full specs for the Huawei pura x Max, the first wide fold of the year are now available. I’m definitely thinking this is just the beginning of the trend and there may be several more including Samsungs own wide fold.

The pura x max spec that has me most excited is stylus support. We’ve seen this feature return for several foldables this year including the Motorola and the Oppo. Samsung is also heavily rumored to bring back the S-Pen for the Z Fold 8 / 8 Wide. Let’s hope Apple will follow the trend with some sort of mini Apple Pencil.
That feature in itself would get me to purchase the Fold if it is available, but I'd like to see how the device actually is in person.

mind if i ask where did you get this one at? ive been looking for a dummy fold for a while now

Looks like the wide Galaxy Fold 8 will start at $1,999.

Before the recent price hikes, I would have said that the Ultra would start at the same price. But with the new hikes, I'm going to guess we see the Ultra start at somewhere between $2,099 and $2,199. I do not believe it will start at $2,500.

Again, I'm talking about base model pricing. Obviously higher storage tiers will allow it to easily reach $2,499 or more.
