True they may give it an all new name to help differentiate it more like “iPhone Folio”. Not to mention, the fold will have some downgrades compared to the Pro like loosing the telephoto lens, Lidar sensor and supposedly MagSafe as well. Their other “Ultra” products are better in every way.

At the same time, the Ultra branding does match their naming scheme with Apple Watch Ultra and the Ultra series M chips.
here's random ones i've been thinking of during this whole year of rumors:
  • iPhone PassPort (imagine we get a new AirPort lol)
  • iPhone Neo (kinda doesn't make sense, should be the name of the iPhone SE)
  • iPhone Air Duo
  • iPhone Air Max
  • iPhone Air Plus
  • iPhone Pro (and then the 1-screen slab pros get renamed as Ultra)
  • iBook (reusing a classic name from macs for something new on iphones like they did with MagSafe)
i think iPhone Folio is a great idea too, and you're right about Ultra not being a good name for the folding iphone if it has less cameras than the pro and is "less capable". The iPhone 17 Pro to me felt like it had the same design language as the Apple Watch Ultra so even then it could've been renamed as the iPhone 17 Ultra or something.

it could be intresting if this becomes the year they start calling them iPhone Pro/Max/Ultra (2026) and remove the number like they do already with macbooks.

I've been pretty convinced for a while that the folding iPhone would be called the 'Ultra'.

But it does seem pretty odd now that it would have the same moniker as the newly announced Z Fold 8 Ultra.

What do you all think? Any chance we get a different name for the foldable? If so, what?

I would point to the Mac Studio with M3 Ultra but they have an iPhone Pro Max and a MacBook Pro with M5 Max.

Not to speak of the rumour of a Macbook Ultra with M6 Max.

Words mean nothing 😵

They could unify a new tier of Ultra expensive devices under the Ultra moniker, but Apple only seem to be consistent in their inconsistency.

I still think it's criminal that they've never resurrected the iBook name, but they moved away from iDevices, probably helped after the iTV debacle.

EDIT: They could really flip it back on Samsung and call it the iPhone note. Also a real souless 'Tim Cook' name would be AppleBook (with the Apple logo on the device)

The foldable having Air in the name would very much make sense: similar design language, form over specs, premium positioning. Air Ultra sounds alright too.

Yeah, I have no confidence now about what it will be at this point.

It just seems weird to me that they would go with Ultra. But who knows.

I hope we get the name in leaks. But we didn't get the MacBook Neo name until the keynote, IIRC.

All these Fold 8 videos make me want this folding iPhone even more.

I may be wrong, but if you go to Best Buy and look at the regular Zfold 8, It may be they made that one (along with the previous Ultra format) to compete with Apple a little. The passport-ish size seems about right. I think it's a rather good competitor also. A considerable improvement over the 7.

They skimped on the camera in that one though, so you're going to get some hate in the forums.

I tried the Fold 8 at best Buy today. No go for me. Too small in folded mode. Text too small and not enough vertical content when scrolling. In unfolded mode, I'd just rather use an iPad mini. I also don't see myself unfolding it much were I to buy it.

So the iPhone fold will be interesting, but it's going to be a similar size and underwhelming for me.

I’ve wanted (or thought I wanted) a foldable iPhone for years, but recently I’ve been reconsidering due to the practicality of the device. If I’m out, for example in a busy shopping area and need to check something on my phone, will the cover screen be too small to comfortably get what I need quickly, and will unfolding be cumbersome?

The outside screen is shorter but wider, I honestly think that is a better size for a the things you use it for when out and about. When you only have one display you need the tall one because sometimes that is better when you are sitting down, but with a foldable you just unfold then.

I too went to Best Buy, I tried it out yesterday for a bit. It is quite short and a little jarring at first. But the keyboard is absolutely perfect for it, very wide and I liked typing on it better than I have on a phone in a long time.

When messaging I didn't think it took up too much room either. It seems more like a tablet than the 8 Ultra, I think because of the widescreen layout when opened.

I've always wanted a fold and have played with the galaxy fold series every year but have been waiting for an iPhone fold.

I was skeptical at first about the size but it just seems right!

I am super excited for September.

I'm excited too... I wasted an hour today watching YouTube reviews of the Fold 8, and there was a lot of positive feedback on the size. Even for the front screen: many said they were surprised they liked it because the dimensions felt natural for content. It was interesting because most of them also got the 8 Ultra at the same time, but preferred the wide format. A lot of them said they were going to make it their daily driver.

One of the videos mentioned that (like Apple) after Samsung's internal testers played with it, they increased its initial production-run order...

I’ve been saying for a long time that the normal phone screen is the way it is because you need it to do all the things in one screen while a foldable can be more specialised.

For just pulling up Spotify or Maps on the go I’d rather have a wider and shorter display, and when I’d want to watch YouTube you just unfold it.

I’ve had my 3D printed iPhone fold for a while but today I finally had the chance to swing by Best Buy and check out the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and WOW! Using a real world working device with this form factor just sold me on the whole thing again. Dare I say, it’s the perfect form factor…

The size when folded feels like the absolute sweet spot for a phone. The width makes it easy to type on, web pages look great with the extra width compared to smaller phones that have narrower screens. Meanwhile, the shorter height makes the whole thing fit in your hand more naturally. In fact the closed form factor is so pleasing that I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a flood of non-folding phones that use this form factor.

Once it’s open it feels a lot more useful than the square screen of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra that was sitting next to it. The unfolded size feels almost identical to the original iPad mini and even though on paper it may not seem like a big jump from the iPhone Pro Max, in real world use, the difference was immense both in portrait and landscape orientation. Most importantly, it didn’t just feel like a bigger phone in the way that my pro max does. It truly felt like a small tablet and depending on how Apple handles the OS side of things, I can definitely see myself using a foldable phone in a much different (more useful) way than using a traditional iPhone.

I think I had the exact same experience as you! I was checking out the size of the unfolded screen when I went to Best Buy, but the total size of the phone itself really struck me. I think the phone is like both an iPad mini and an iPhone mini combined. Actually even better because the screen proportions are more friendly for a lot of content. It was also so light in the hand.

I remember when I got the first large-screen iPhone how unwieldy it felt, especially in my pocket. But I adjusted to it because I liked the large screen. This phone reminds me of how much I liked my Motorola flip phone back in the day. Just such a nice size and weight in the hand, in the pocket, etc. Really nice phone. I can't wait for the iPhone version...

BTW, the Spanish site that collaborated with me for some updated iPhone Ultra renders finally used them:

The video above has a mix of different versions, but for the updates they chose the basic 'iPhone Air' style rear, I think they're dubious about the black camera bump rumour - it's only been reported a couple of times.

I'll pop a longer set of renders on my own Youtube channel in a few weeks if anyone's interested 😉

Gurman says the third-gen model will have larger inner and outer screens.

I thought there was a potential that the first-gen model would stay that size for future models and Apple would make a larger version alongside it down the road.

Doesn't appear that will be the case.

So we will have one book-style model yearly and then maybe down the road a tri-fold model as well.

...My hopes of an Ultra mini have just been dashed 🙄

Smaller than the upcoming model? I never thought that would happen honestly.
Neither did I, to be honest - I'm just mourning the dwindling battery of my 13 mini.

Next time I get to London I need to spare half a day to get the battery replaced.

I would love to see Apple make a new iPhone mini that is simply the folding iPhone’s outer screen.

I genuinely think I'll wait for 6 months then scour eBay for someone selling one cheap with a broken inner screen
