This exploded now because of the epic fail on UI/UX, but the browser has been neglected over and over throughout many years, always selling "snappier" smoke, extensions are mostly half baked cash grab "features". We use compact view which helps the tab issues but it's still a giant miserable fail, has spacing issues all over and some titles disappear.

A so called "privacy oriented" browser which even Google's has better privacy management tools through extensions. No built-in adblocker, no individual site privacy managment just X number of trackers on a popup.

Responsive view shows iphone 8 as latest phone lol. Chill guys, it's just "aesthetics" so they may never fix it anyways. 130 versions of STP for this?!

If you are trying to test a certain dimension, say FULL HD 1920 x 1080px, good luck trying to scroll the viewport width & height to the exact number, an option to input dimensions should be provided.

We've submitted feedback for many of these for ages, they can't care less it's clear, but we're not gonna sit and praise them like they are doing us a favor shipping out mediocre quality software like many users here do with moronic arguments such as "you have to pay attention", man, no wonder Timmy is squeezing every penny they can, with that mindset we would likely still be using butterfly keyboards and lightning port to charge the pencil. Hats off.

The inspector can't even do what it's suposed to in vertical view, inspect an html element. Let alone crashes, freezes, CSS selector duplication when editing, etc, etc.

Even Microsoft with Edge is outperforming Safari on Apple's own platform, a disgrace.

To make things more confusing: When using Private browsing, the acrive/inactive tab color appears opposite of normal browsing.

They don't swap for me. In both private and normal browsing, the active tab is darker.

Safari's Private browsing is also confusing because there is no clear indicator that you are using it. Sure, when you first open a Private window, there is some text at the top of the page. But that text goes away when you go to a website. At least Google Chrome shows the Incognito badge in the toolbar.

So true. The tabs are way darker in provide mode, but I need something more explicit.

It's truly awful. Not to mention how many issues I've run into with websites not fully loading. I wish I could return to Safari 14. At this point considering switching over to Chrome or Firefox as my main browser.
You can by reinstalling Big Sur, thankfully. Though you’ll need to ‘factory reset’.

YOUR WISHES ARE GRANTED ON SAFARI DARK MODE...
Am I the only one using it??
Active tab is lighter than the inactive one!
Try Dark Mode.

People don't like the new design that was made for designs sake? Well, users are just going to have to give it some time until they get used to and comfortable with it. At that point, Apple will roll out a new design just to confuse users and force them to relearn things again.

It's like how Microsoft made dumb design changes with Windows 8, forcing user to forget about what they learned and were accustomed to from the prior 10+ years of using Windows. And when they started getting comfortable with the Windows 8 design and layout, Microsoft changes things again with Windows 10.
Good point. Safari 15 is Apple’s Windows 8. Truly damning.

I took a good look at the picture in the article. I opened the exact same two pages, duplicating the settings. I have the exact opposite result than what's pictured. Could this just be a bug?

Gosh, I really love it. The color changing makes it easy to find the window I want. And I always love getting more screen real estate. I for one hope they don’t change it back, just continue to make it more stable.

I love the "compact" mode, but it makes zero sense to also make the "separate" mode use non-standard tabs. I mean, they're functionally identical to the old style, and inconsistent with the rest of the OS.

Not sure what's will all this fuss. I really like the new Compact mode on Safari 🤷‍♂️
The fuss is John Gruber doesn’t like it and wrote a long blog post + complained for a half hour on his podcast.

Starting with MacOS Big Sur, all keyboard commands in the menu bar appear grayed out even when the command is available. And depending on whether the system is set to Light or Dark, and the desktop picture that is used, those keyboard commands can be difficult to read. What MacOS engineer at Apple thought this was a good idea?
I hadn't notice that (but the keyboard shortcut still works, obviously) . . .

Completely agree. I’ve closed the wrong tab several times - something I don’t think I’ve ever done before. It’s not just the colours either. They’ve broken the link between the tabs and the page (or, technically the address bar in Safari, which has been upside down for years), so the very metaphor of them being tabs is broken. They’re not tabs anymore, just buttons. It works on iOS where you can only see one at a time, but on the mac it’s confusing.

I don't like it and I switched off the shading feature. I could barely tell where the tabs were on many pages.

I was just thinking that after reading this tread and double checking. The active tab is lighter for me when using dark mode, though I dont like the placement of the X button I keep closing my active tab by mistake

I remember when + button used to be the one click add bookmark button. Things change.

It's just Apple's unspoken philosophy now to change cosmetics arbitrarily with major updates, even when it was not broken, so that a user feels like it is new. Safari on iOS changed how pages work so often that it is now the most unproductive. Safari tabs on desktop have been similarly changing designs every few years too for no reason.
