Only IE can work with Active-X. So Safari, for all its speed and beautifully rendered pages, is a fail vs IE. More and more sites are using Active-x, .net and asp.

I'm not even gonna comment on that... other than saying I'm not gonna comment. Okay, I can't help it. Did you just say Safari is a FAIL vs IE? Really? I mean, really? Are you on the IE development team?

I just ran the SunSpider JS Benchmark on my sig machine

Safari 4: 676.8ms
Firefox 3.0.6: 2667.6ms

Maybe I'll reboot into Vista later tonight and run the tests on IE7, although I know from the post that it'll be wretched. Therefore, in terms of speed, IE=FAIL.

Is there a way to enable single window mode in safari where all new windows open in tabs?
Try following in Terminal:
Code:
defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true
Works fine for me. Could cause some problems with popup windows that force a specific window size. It actually overrides your browser then. But for me, this is really rare.

I would love to switch back to safari again, but I have 2 quick questions

how is Safari's footprint?
Does it take a lot of RAM like Firefox does? (I hate it how firefox eats up a lot of RAM)

Also, hows the tab browsing? I love firefox and chrome's "command 1, command 2, etc etc" tab function for quick tab browsing...

Thanks~

I don't know if it's just me or not, but I cannot load hotmail properly when I use beta 4. The emails simply do not load. Does anyone else have this error? Other than that, this is a great new browser :)

+1
I love everything about Safari 4, except the ridiculous location of the tabs. Happy to get them back where they belong now :D

What a great release by Apple...Safari MOPS THE FLOOR with competing browsers...NOTHING comes close and I am absolutely happy with the beta version (apart from the tabs position, which I reverted to the old position but may still return to the top ones, and the broken currency widget)...GO APPLE!

Divx a NO GO in Safari 4

use divx for mac to watch video OS X 4.11 with either Safari 3.1 or FireFox
3 downloaded 4 doesn't work on Safari 4 uninstalled 4 went back to 3 works. On 4 said url not valid Quicktime an divx screen was red.
HELLLLLP?

iPhone Sync Probems?

I installed Safari 4 last night and really enjoyed the speed (but miss the Stop & Reload buttons).

Before I went to bed I plugged in my iPhone which I have set to sync everytime its plugged in. When I got up this moring it was still stuck on "Syncing Bookmarks" (from Safari 4) I had to manually force a quit.

Anyone else experience this?

Auto Refresh

Some of the websites that Auto-refresh, in particular Yahoo's Financial Portfolios page, refresh automatically like normal with Firefox, Camino, etc. Safari has yet to develop a Browser that does this. Is this difficult?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

What about the Mac version?

Is that your question? Download it and see.

I did download it, but that graph is about the PC version so I was wondering how S4 compared to other Mac browsers.

In fact, let's just take that a bit further and say Active-X is FAIL. Horrible, horrible technology, at least in the way MS implemented it in Windows.

I assume you found the stop/reload buttons, but just in case . . . they're right beside the RSS button. Just mouseover to activate.

That's the question. Is 3D a part of some new standard, or are the 3D demos just Stupid Canvas Tricks(TM)?
I'll take the 2nd one for 500 Alex. :)

Can't find this asked anywhere...

Has anyone found a way of changing the default search engine?? I'm from the UK, and Google US is a tad annoying.

I used to solve this with Inquisitor, but that doesn't work (at the moment anyway).
On the General Preference page it looks like you can choose between Google and Yahoo. Don't see a way to add or remove options from there. Submitted bug report... :(

Top Sites

I'm probably just thinking too hard but I deleted my top site NYTimes. I know I can drag the existing ones around on the screen but can I add NYTimes back in manually? --- oops just found answer under Apple support boards.

No offense, but the Safari Adblock thing is teh suck without element hiding. Who wants a big white spot where the ads were?

Works fine for me, perhaps you're too picky?

Safari 4 is eye-wateringly fast, even without Javascript. I just need to get used to Cmd+Clicking bookmarks to open a new tab and I'll be happy with it.

My only complaint - which imbecile got rid of the Stop button?

?? There's no reload button, mouse over or otherwise....

Doesn't work with Active-x. Doesn't work well with .net or aspx sites. Fail.

Active-X is proprietary junk that we can all do without. .NET and .aspx sites aren't reliant on the browser, they are server technologies and more proprietary junk we can all do without.

You pick your browser by how it works with Microsofts bloatware? Fail.

Yes there is!
It's the little curved arrow on the right hand side of the address space. Just click it and the page will reload.

Click it while the page is loading and it will stop loading.

Same here, I can log in to Hotmail fine but it refuses to open up any of the e-mails. Works fine in Firefox and the previous version of Safari - so something is deffo up with this beta.

Anyone have any solutions?

Nice, but I'm not sure I will abandon Firefox just yet though.

This Safari 4 finally won out over Firefox on my iBook. It's faster, finally. Also Firefox has been getting more and more unstable and irritating recently. Just need flashblock for Safari :)

First of all hahahahaha to the bigest losers on the planet the ie 8 guys, by far the worst, what a sorry bunch they are. And they are clearly the benchmark losers... They even have a blog tracking their progress or lack thereof, you can visit them for a good laugh::D

http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/

Secondly,

CNET IS BEING VERY VERY UNFAIR, THEY SHOULD HAVE USED OPERA 10 ALPHA WITH THE NEW PRESTO OPTIMIZED RENDERING ENGINE, THIS IS CLEARLY A BIASED DECISION FROM THEIR PART. BIGGEST LOSERS NUMBER TWO AFTER THE IE GUYS THE GUYS OVER AT CNET FOR SURE.
