I tried to update after re-installing to try and get to the latest version of Safari 4 (whichever number that was) and was told that there were no software upgrades available!
I wondered whether that was because the Apple site was detecting that I had previously downloaded Safari 5 - because it didn't even offer me that!
It may be linked to the other posts on this thread - ie) that there are no longer any links to download Safari 4, which do not re-direct you to Safari 5.
But whatever the position is - I am far better off than I was with a completely malfunctioning Safari 5!
Sorry I can't be of more help on that one.

I think its because you have a Safari 5 download receipt still on your comp. This will make software update think you still have 5 installed. Not sure where they are located but you need to trash the file.

I hope Apple will fix this problem soon.
Thanks for all of your help,I will try to reinstall Safari later :)

It has buggered me right up! I reinstalled from the disk, then when I open safari, it tells me the version is too new for my system!

Sorry jeff66 - although I don't understand how that can happen if you have used the disc that came with your machine in the first place.
I was wondering whether you or anybody else in the house had a newer Mac and you had used the disc that came with that machine instead?

Thanks MacBoobsPro
That's what i thought it might be.
I'll try and find it later and will report back if i do.

Possibly, I have 6 Macs in the house....

I think that explains it!
Good luck in trying to find the right set of discs!
Although with 6 Macs in the house - it might not be as urgent for you to do so as it was for me!

I know I don't have the discs for this mac..... But you are right, not as urgent.. But a bloody pain!:D

I know.
But even if you don't have the disc that came with that particular Mac - any disc from a Mac of the same or a similar age should suffice.
Good luck anyway.

So I said to myself:
"Safari 5? Wow! Great! Got to be a killer browser upgrade. Jumps clear to 5.0 from 4.etcetra.

Fifteen minutes later:
"Told ya not to download it dummy," my smarter inner-self whispered as I ended-up with a surprisingly-slow, screwed-up piece-of-a-browser.

The Boss better fix this central embarrassment, NOW.

(10.6.3, no extra stuff, and resets nor permission repairs make a diff).

Anyone else experiencing wayy higher temps?

I've been hovering around 82*C all morning

I've been using Safari all day. I close Safari and my comp's temp goes to ~50*

Load Safari and I'm back up to 80*

WTF?

CPU usage is only at around 2-6% too

Easy solution to one Safari 5 Problem

I downloaded Safari 5 onto my OS X 10.5.8 system this morning, and found that web pages would not load (the progress bar would freeze before the page displayed).

The solution for me was to remove CosmoPod. In my case it was in HD>Library>Input Managers. Once I moved that folder to the desktop, and restarted Safari it worked just fine. Some people have reported that something called CT Loader is causing similar problems, and the solution is the same - though you may find it in a folder called SIMBL.

This discussion (with solutions) is also happening on the official Apple support forums.

They also say there that Safari is initially slow, but then starts to speed up considerably. Likely it's rebuilding some cache files.

Good Luck

There's a couple of things you could try:

In the Safari menu select Reset Safari and select everything but the Saved Passwords option. After that restart Safari. This can fix some website errors.

The second is to enable the Develop menu (Preferences > Advanced) and change the user agent to An older Safari Version. Some websites sniff the user agent to fix the site for certain browsers and they probably haven't updated the sites for Safari 5 yet.

The news ticker on BBC News works for me.

No issues here, on a 2010 Macbook Pro 13 running OS X 10.6.3. Loaded up and is actually running quite quick already. First time loading pages was slow, but now no problem. Haven't used a stopwatch, but seems to be quicker loading pages.

Wonder if there is a hardware/software configuration issue with older gen Mac's?

No issues here either. Pages load faster, and I am a happy camper!

Safari 5 won't open for me either~~~I've been using FF more lately with the Safari 4 crashes and all my bookmarks are imported onto it so I tried it out not caring much about whether it was good or not...surely it should work ok w/10.5?

I sent two or three reports..bet they're busy:D

I agree with Safari 5...seems slower; hasn't crashed yet, but I feel that I am missing some of the "zip" that happened with Safari 4. I am going to hold off installing it on my other macs and just let my 13 inch MBP suffer alone for now.

I don't know what happened, but Safari 5 seems to be working fine now (I had to reboot 2-3 times, keep resetting it,& I was continuously remove the cache files & things like that with CleanMyMac).

But the thing I noticed was that the temps don't run as high as it did when I had Safari 4 ( the last version before 5),but it is a bit slower; the progress bar make the pages looks like the speed has slowed down.

On mine some pages take forever to load, some only load halfway and some load but with images and videos missing. I have no foreign plug-ins and have reset Safari. I don't know what the problem is.

Yup, same boat. Running on 10.5.8. ESPN website is terribly slow and I've had several instances when pages wouldn't even load.

Same. No problems. The reader feature is rather cool, but I don't like the rest of the changes.

I love that they brought back the old Safari progress bar. Reader is great too.

Nope! It's running better than any previous Safari for me. 68 C right now....

All in all, it's been pure awesome for me...I haven't opened FF since I downloaded. :) I use 10.5.8 BTW.

It's back to normal today. Not sure what was going on yesterday

Did you have anything else running at the time?

Another thing I love is fullscreen in HTML5. That = win for the YouTube HTML5 beta. :)

I don't understand how you guys are having all these problems. Safari works extremely well, if not perfect, for me. It was slow at first, but after about an hour, everything is lightning speed.

How the hell do you have all these problems?
