Safari 5 Issues

I am having the same issues. Browser's progress bar sits, pages do not load. I have Widgets that no longer work (i.e. Weather), and Software update gives me a network error, though things are fine on that end.

Really regretting updating. What a hassle. Taking my MacBook to a Genius unless I can find an easier route to fix this.

Read my post on page 2, post #35. If you have CosmoPod, this will likely fix it. If you don't have CosmoPod, temporarily move other Input Managers to the Desktop and restart Safari 5 to see if that fixes it. Before you go to the Apple Store, check the Apple Support forums first, and do a search there. I figured out my problem easily with a search on the Apple support forum.

Good Luck.

I don't understand how you guys are having all these problems. Safari works extremely well, if not perfect, for me. It was slow at first, but after about an hour, everything is lightning speed.

How the hell do you have all these problems?

My guess is third party software. Apple, however, is not responsible for making their software compatible with every little utility or app marketed by third party or open source vendors.

Fortunately, glimmerblocker still works great! :D

Safari 5 Resolution!

DUMP SAFARI 5 AND RE-LOAD YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM WITH THE CD'S THAT CAME WITH YOUR COMPUTER. I'm not sure but think Safari 5 isn't compatible with Leapard. Be sure the box is checked to save your old settings. Apple is working on a fix. UNTIL THEN! DON'T DOWNLOAD IT.

Slow or none loading of pages

I recently upgraded to Safari 5 and am somewhat disappointed in its performance. I am running Windows 7 as an OS and had no problems to speak of with the previous Safari version. My top sites page took an hour + to load fully. I am disappointed in this version.

Running fine here on two 10.5.8 Macs. I Like the reader feature and it seems a good speed after the first few page loads. A good one click download plug-in (any suggestions? Using the excellent DownloadHelper on Firefox) and it might just tempt me away from FF for good.

Running Safari 5 on my MBP, the loading speed goes from practically non-existent to average. Safari 5 isn't nearly as fast as Safari 4 was. Safari 5 has crashed three times for me so far. Sometimes, the loading bar doesn't fill up the entire address bar even when it has finished loading up a page.

Really want to downgrade right now and just wait for 5.1 to come out.

Yup, sucks here too. Same problems as have been described. Running 10.5.8 on a late 2008 MBP. No problems previously, flawless for two years as a matter of fact.

Geez, I never thought it would be Apple that would screw up my Mac!

Found a solution to my problem - I wasn't able to load any pages in Safari. I remember this happened before on one of the udates:

I'm running cosmopod. So I downloaded the new cosmopod update via Firefox, then installed it. Magically, Safari was then able to open.:D

If you're having problems, it's probably due to third party software. Look for the solution there.

I call bull$h!t. Works perfectly on my Leopard system.

Folks, if you are having a problem, it is most likely some third party software you have that needs to be updated by the developer.

Safari has crashed EIGHT (8) times now. At this rate it will crash 28 times a week. This is getting really annoying. Loading speeds are still slow. Anyone know of a good / simple downgrade method to v4.0.5?

Wouldn't it be easier to remove the 3rd party plug-in or extension that is causing the crashes first? The vast majority of Safari 5 users are experiencing no issues, so it's not a fundamental flaw in Safari. Once you get Safari 5 up and running cleanly, then you can add the plug-ins back in to find the culprit. By the time you do this, you'll probably find the developer has issued an updated version that will work with Safari 5.

To be fair, since Safari 5 seems to be so pick about the plug-ins and extensions it will work with, it would be nice if Safari 5 identified which ones were causing problems, or at least let you start Safari in "Safe Mode". Even better would be a preference pane where you could check off which plug-ins to start or not.

Good Luck. Once I resolved my CosmoPod issue everything runs great with Safari 5 for me.

Won't even open window

I am on Firefox right now. I downloaded Safari 5 and after restart it wouldn't open a window. When I tried to open new tab it crashed. I tried to delete all my plugins and then reinstall Safari 5 but still does the same thing. Not sure what it could be.
MacBook 2GHz
MacOSX 10.5.8

Issue Resolved

It is definitely a third party plugin. I went into the InputManagers Folder in my Library directory and deleted everything in it. Opened Safari and it started working, albiet first load was a little slow, after that it works like a charm.

Well, a crash day 1 isn't a great start...

Mine crashed within a few hours, right in the middle of an online game that had previously worked fine. (Darn, my little Yoda was flattening those battle droids.) Not a great start. It did mention a possible audio plug in conflict- No Apple, I will not remove my plug ins, as they worked fine until now. I shall wait and hope for updates to fix it and just play the game in firefox. Worst case scenario-I've save the older Safari (3 and 4 both) on an external drive. No reason to think they won't work. (Of course for awhile there, I did have to start in Rosetta mode.)

I probably should've known to wait awhile though. Whenever a new 'upgraded' app comes out first there are bound to be a few bugs to work out, and a few websites that'll need tweaking. I just started learning web design and am realizing these issues can drive a designer nuts!

I can't play any vids on youtube since updating; works fine on Firefox.

Suggestions?

Check your 3rd party plug-ins and extensions....

I just watched a whole bunch of Eddie Izzard YouTube videos, no problems. The best one is Darth Vader and the Death Star Canteen, done with Lego. "Are you Mr. Stevens?" :D

Some one has reported that if they delete everything in ~>Library>Input Managers that Safari works great. I had to delete CosmoPod from there. I wouldn't delete everything initially, just put it somewhere else and see if Safari works. If it does, then start putting things back one at a time until you've isolated the culprit. Then see if the developer has issued an updated version. If they haven't yet, then they will likely do so in the next couple of days. CosmoPod had an updated version available that I ignored before Safari 5 came out. If I had been up to date, I would have had no problems. So, check your 3rd party stuff.

Safari 5 problem

I downloaded Safari 5 last night onto three of our computers. All of them are now having difficulty loading sites that have video content (eg the newspaper). They just freeze.

The weird thing is that Firefox is behaving differently now too. I have checked the modem, router etc and they all appear to be working normally.

Does anyone know how to re-load the old version? Any help would be greatly appreciated

It seems slower to load for me. It hangs for a few seconds then loads the page in stages. Slower than 4. :(

EDIT: There are also a few visual problems too. Not sure if it HTML5 related or not but the scrolling banner thingy on BBC website no longer works.

It appears this has been fixed. I've heard friends with issues with accessing their banks and HSBC had an issue, but now its all working fine.

I think no one expected the update and just needed to add some more HTML5 goodyness into their sites to make them aware of Safari 5's features.

How to get Safari5 working.

Some of you are having the same problems I had. I could load no more than 2 pages without having to restart my router. Things loaded very slowly and then just stopped. I tried uninstalling programs and nothing changed.

What worked and worked completely is going to system preferences>Network>Advanced>DNS>+ and adding in these two numbers under DNS Servers:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Make sure you click apply afterwards

You may have to restart your computer or router, but maybe not. These numbers should work for everybody.

Actually ... you've lit a bulb over head. I'm not having problems, but have been reading a fair bit about others who have.

Safari 5 has something called DNS pre-fetching, IIRC. It's possible that people's DNS settings are not working well. Instead of adding those two DNS name servers, I would suggest that people with slow loading should check with their ISPs to see if their DNS set up is still what the ISP is recommending. Just an idea....

I'll try that, thanks. :)

Since adding in those numbers I've had no problems at all, so with me at least something wasn't working in that regard. I wonder if my NetShare settings could have altered things?

I had spent hours trying different things until I went over to the Apple community forum where adding the DNS numbers was working for people.

Hopefully Apple will add an update of some sort soon.
