Forget photos... the bigger story is how crisp and sharp the screen is. Beautiful.

I can't wait to see one in person.

Oh... and for comparison... can someone share a screenshot from the iPad 2?

Developers need to get some higher res icons going on and quick lol

Still cannot see the point in using an iPad to take pictures....

The camera seems to be perfect in order to copy documents. This is a real life task for the new iPad. I wonder why nobody thought about that.

Remember: the iPad isn't just for fun. It can help students and other professionals with their daily work.

Edit: LOL, that Angry Birds icon doesn't look like "HD" at all - epic failure!

I guess it's worth noting that at least iMovie did not increase in size because of the retina update, but mostly because of the new media (background music) included with the app.

...which of course does not change the fact that the app did increase in size significantly. ;) But for me, the main argument for the 64GB version was the 1080p recording capability of the camera.

I will chose de 16gb version, it's cheaper and enough for my needs. My music it's on iCloud so no need to having all of them in the device. I have a lot of apps in my ipod touch that i don't use, so i think that will be a good reason for having in the device only the apps that i use.

damn - should have gone with the 64gig instead of the 32gig version ... when all my apps double in space on the long run i'll have to make a much more careful selection than in the past

I know that Apple is making a push towards iCloud, but I still don't understand why they wouldn't allow a 128GB option. Apps will more than double in size, the pictures and video you shoot will now take up more space, and HD videos you download will be considerably larger than before. You'll be able to tote around a lot less of the same stuff on this unit.

I run at about 40GB on my iPad 2 -- so I've got some room to grow, and probably could prune some stuff, but when all my apps get bigger, its gonna gobble up what I could have saved, and then some. Hmmm

I agree. Having the new iPad have a 16GB version doesn't seem useful. Going 32GB, 64GB, 128GB would've made more sense and I'm all for leaving the 16GB iPad 2 for sale for those who only need 16GB. That's my only gripe but all in all this is an excellent update and I can't wait to receive mine. Unfortunately, I didn't make it in time for the pre-order.

wait till the next year, they are doing their best to bring 128GB. that Israel company they bought over (technology) and $100B cash should help them to increase the size

but i had expect the size increase in laptop line first MBA, MBP and then it will fall into iPhone and iPad ...

If anything, for many the point of buying or upgrade to 2012 iPad is retina display. No less no more.

Screw A5X chip, "limited edition" 4G LTE, new camera. It's all about the display. And admittedly you have to consider getting 64GB for this, even if it only WiFi. Apps size are going to be epic since they have to push high UI image resolution and all, beside new features of course.

PS: Let's get used to call the new iPad as 2012 iPad instead of self-made up names like iPad 3 or iPad 2S :D

I'm still not fully understanding why an iPad needs a camera at all. I understand the front-facing camera for facetime conversations, but what's the point of the other camera on the back?

Like you said, Facetime: To show someone what you're looking at.

What surprised me is they went all-out with the rear-facing camera, without improving the front-facing camera at all.

You can use it to add photo's of documents to Evernote.

You can use it at work, e.g. working in a factory using the iPad as a portable document to complete a checklist, you can add photo's to the checklist to report a problem, or email the photo straight to the appropriate person.

There are a lot more uses for an iPad than Facebook and Angry Birds.

This blew my mind.

Here's that home screen - shown at actual size on my 13" MacBook:

Guy’s which as the better Video camera (iphone4s or new ipad) as I like the idea of taking video on the ipad around the house and then editing it on imovie on ipad. If the iphone is a better camera then I guess I will need to try and get the footage from iphone onto ipad as I don’t fancy editing it on the phone (far too small)

Methinks I am going to regret only jumping up to 32gb, based on the increase in size of the apps! At least my imported photos will stay the same size and just look nicer. I don't actually use that many apps but with wanting to experience how apss look in retina glory once they are updated I can see me running into issues.

I ordered the 16 GB for pickup at the store, if I get there early will they swap it out for a 32 GB from the stock for people just showing up to grab one?

If you're there early enough, they should. I don't see why not. Get there early tho so they won't run out of stock.

I guess people are gonna have to get used to shuffling media between the computer and the iPad.

Unless you're gonna be away from your computer for weeks... you'll be able to move movies and stuff when you need them.

In fact, you should be using a computer for backup anyway... data doesn't exist unless it's in 2 places (or more)

Any news on how big a 1080p iTunes movie will be? How much are they compressed?

I know 1080p videos shot with the iPhone 4S camera are about 180MB/minute. I would expect iPad video files to be the same.

For me, the upgrade to 1GB memory is at least as important as the retina display - in the long run probably even more important.

I don't actually see why apps should automatically get that much bigger. The only thing that will get bigger are any bitmap graphics embedded in the app, such as icons. And in most apps, embedded bitmap graphics make up only a fairly small part of the total size.

As I pointed out before, the size of iMovie grew due to additional media. And also the updates to the other apps were not just retina adaptations, but they also added some features.

And 2012 iPad is not a self-made up name?

Why not call it what Apple calls it? iPad (3rd Generation).
