Camera does look decent in most scenarios. Just a shame it seems to get washed out easily outside.

Wish I had the money to pick one of these up.

Just to play devil's advocate, are we certain that the new app sizes on those iWork apps are due to the retina display and not due to, I don't know, added functionality Apple talked about at the announcement?

I'll be curious to find out if built-in apps such as Music and Message are treated with retina treatment.

I'm just comprehending the fact that the viewfinder displays almost 1:1 pixels of the sensor. That's the sensor feeding 270MB/s of data to the application.

thats actually very unlikely...

even with the current iPhone and iPad..the preview image while in the camera app is a much lower resolution than the actual photos you take..

It's not like they only had two weeks warning, this has been brewing for over a year...
And when was the updated XCode released?

It's pretty meaningless to listen to rumors for a year when the development tools to adapt your code to a new product are released only after the keynote speech.

As I keep saying, I am quite sure that the largest part of the increase is due to added functionality. :D

iMovie being the prime example - just listen to the keynote, and you will know why the size increased so significantly. After all, why should iMovie increase by a few hundred MB just due to the retina upgrade? I am guessing that iMovie contains just a few hundred kb of bitmap graphics (e.g. title screen, icons) which will now be replaced with higher-res graphics.

Good picture opportunities happen fast very often and I like to have as many convenient cameras around a possible to make sure I don't miss something. Any one with kids knows what I mean.

I have a five-year old and I do know what you mean. My wife and I are taking pics and videos of her constantly, and often, those photos remain on our iPhones while grandparents and aunts and uncles keep begging for them. Why? Well, because editing on iPhone is a pain, and transferring to computer to edit there is even worse. I keep leaving it for later, until it finally becomes too late, as nobody wants to see pics of a little kid from six months ago, they want to see the new ones!

At many events, I see parents wielding iPads to shoot, and it did look silly to me, only because I knew how crappy the camera is, but I knew why they were doing it. Now, with the respectable camera and that glorious screen, I will really feel like not just taking the damn photo and video, but more importantly FINISHING THE JOB by editing it immediately (as well as sending/uploading, what with the LTE)

And let me tell you, I own a Canon 5D with a respectable set of lenses, so I know all about the value of having a one great photo over a hundred average ones. It's just that with a kid, taking that one great shot is almost impossible. It's more about diligent documentation and distribution, high-quality be damned. But 1-MP is just not gonna cut it, even for documentation. So yeah, I'm quite excited about the new camera on iPad.

EDIT: and here is another thing: iPad will be not only a great editing device, but also a great displaying device. If I took a video earlier in the day and wanted to show it to people later, I don't have to transfer it to my computer and have everyone run over to sit in front of it, or squint at my iPhone... I can just put my iPad on it's folding cover, or just hand it over to people, and they can sit back and enjoy without wondering how it looks like on the bigger screen, and without the pain of transferring to the computer and then making everyone stand in front of it to watch.

The new iPad doesn't have a flash, right? If that's the case that's going to really limit how good pictures will look under many conditions.

I think it's nice they improved the camera (I'd call the one in the iPad 2 unusable in many situations) but it seems a waste to me to put in a decent camera but leave off a flash.

Let's see how the sensor holds up, but I'm not a big fan of using a POS flash ever as I can't stand the washed out look. I previously used it only in high contrast situations (shooting against the sun), but now with the HDR I don't even do that anymore.

Sure, it'd be better to have the flash than to not have it, but I don't think it makes a big difference quality wise. To me, it's consistent with Apple's approach of not caring for specs as much as for the overall experience, and of course, it's the right one. If the conditions are not good, just don't take the photo. It's incredibly annoying when a flash goes off in intentionally dimmed room only to get some silly photo with everyone looking like deer in headlights with the background completely black.

Exactly what I've been saying! Take the videos, edit, upload. All with one single device that is capable of recording decent-quality video and allows for comfortable fast editing sufficient for simple family videos.

I don't know why people keep going on about how stupid it looks to use an iPad for taking pictures/video. It amazes me how many people apparently feel that "different" = "stupid". I would not have expected so many conservative traditionalists in an Apple forum. Did people feel the same way when the first digital cameras without a viewfinder were released?

I am sure that in the future, there will be apps which take full advantage of the bigger screen also for taking pictures. For example, a camera app could present you with the last five pictures you have taken while you take the next one, so you can compare the framing if you take a series of shots, or you could tap one of the other pictures to align white balance with that one, etc.

Does Apple get to push separate retina-enabled version of the same apps to the AppStore, while other developers should sell big-sized universal versions?

Not at all. Developers have access to the same SDK and can, if they want to put in the effort, redo their apps with new graphics to support the new screen. And many will. Although for some of the magazines etc it might take some time because they will either have to do all new images or actually create a text based version via HTML5 or such.

What's awesome about them? They're not all that sharp and there's no dynamic range: there's no black levels in them. Those could probably be boosted in post-processing, but natively, those pictures posted aren't actually very good.

It was sarcasm that didn't really deliver the way it should have. :p

The pics look alright. They're better than the iPad 2 by leaps and bounds. I wouldn't use it as my first camera or anything but if I had to because it's what's closest, I wouldn't mind.

That picture has lots of pixels but sure looks nasty. Jobs himself was explaining that not all MegaPixels were equal explaining that it's not about the number of pixels in your picture that counts, but how good the photo looks.

Points for understanding the full game. the MP isn't the only factor. The haters dissing cause the MP in the iPad is less than the iPhone are missing that detail.

I understand the front-facing camera for facetime conversations, but what's the point of the other camera on the back?

I can give you two examples. Both from FaceTime.

1. my 13 year old step brother 'broadcasting' my 9 year old twin half brothers doing their taekwondo belt test at the local rec center in Memphis while I am in LA. Sure he could have just filmed it and emailed it to me later but imagine the thrill of being able to call the boys to congratulate them right then.

2. I'm often on set with one unit while the head of whatever is on set with the other unit. Makeup and costume in particular love to pull this. But they want to see the actors set ready look to make adjustments (especially the background). Since we often have a satellite wifi rig it's easy to do it live via FaceTime.

in both of these cases the camera operator needs to know that the camera is looking at the right place so being able to see the feed from the back camera on the screen is important.

but iMovie on the iPhone is not such a great user experience, especially when the videos get longer. But with the iPad, I can take the video, comfortably edit it immediately and directly on the device and upload it. No switching between devices. No fiddling on a small screen.

agreed. same with the new iPhoto. They are fine UIs given that it is such a small screen but in truth, they are crap to work with because its so small. I either shoot with the iPad and to directly to edit or shoot with my iPhone and transfer it to the iPad.

----------

I agree. Having the new iPad have a 16GB version doesn't seem useful.

Not everyone wants all their media on their iPad or to load 50 apps at a time etc.

But they do want the crisp screen.

And I believe there made be a price issue on the storage chips still. If going up to 128GB is still too costly Apple won't do it because they don't want to raise the price and they have to answer to the shareholders on losing too much of the profit margin by eating the difference (yeah Apple is in this to make money, shocking but true)

I’m confused. Will there be two versions of app’s in the app store? I have a first gen 16gig ipad and I’m worried that the same app will take 2x more storage space for content that I will never see. And what if I do buy an ipad 3 and app developers decide to charge again for “retina” updates. I paid once for the app, do I have to pay again?

Either way you look at it it’s not good.

Ipad 1 and 2 16gig users are going to get screwed in app storage for newer retina capable apps that will have no impact on what you see. Otherwise you’re going to see 2 versions of the same app “potentially” making you pay twice once you upgrade to ipad 3.

Or

If you upgrade to ipad 3 will the retina capable apps be a free update? Will developers eat the cost to upgrade the current apps? The new weakness for the retina display is that older ipad apps will look like crap because the screen is so good and the app resolution is so low. If you game on a PC try running your favorite game at 1024x768 on a 1920x1080p display. I can guarantee you that the game will look like garbage. Just imagine running a 1024x768 app on a 2048x1536 display. Get the picture?

And I’m sorry to say but when I see people take videos with a tablet they look like complete morons. Any “adult” that has a $500 tablet in public should also have access to a capable smartphone. Why upgrade to ipad 3 if you’re still rocking a crappy flip phone. Even those $100 point and shoots are so much better; real optical zoom.

I ordered the 16 GB for pickup at the store, if I get there early will they swap it out for a 32 GB from the stock for people just showing up to grab one?

We don't know. But the first question will be if they have any 32GB to swap with so you better get there real early.

I would also watch the site and see if they will allow reservations for in store on Friday. If they do, reserve one. If it doesn't let you reserve that size then you have your answer. THey won't have one for you to swap

I agree. Having the new iPad have a 16GB version doesn't seem useful. Going 32GB, 64GB, 128GB would've made more sense and I'm all for leaving the 16GB iPad 2 for sale for those who only need 16GB. That's my only gripe but all in all this is an excellent update and I can't wait to receive mine. Unfortunately, I didn't make it in time for the pre-order.
Can you imagine what people would've been up against if Apple did what people thought they would do: release the iPad 2 in a 8GB variant for $399. I suppose thought that made business sense because the Kindle Fire is 8GB but Apple knew how much these units are going to gobble up and kept it user-friendly rather than make the thing practically unusable.

Thanks Apple for not giving us less when cutting the price by 1/5! :)

And when was the updated XCode released?

It's pretty meaningless to listen to rumors for a year when the development tools to adapt your code to a new product are released only after the keynote speech.

Given that the iPhone 4 went retina 2 years ago it would be logical to assume that eventually the iPad would also and to prepare your graphics for such a case. Especially when the rumors of an exact size started going around. You don't need Xcode for that.

The photos are not that too impressive, maybe because they are not taken in ideal conditions.

That's innovative to include a camera that needs ideal condtions to take a proper photo.
Think of all the time it will save people not taking photos in less than ideal conditions.

It's not like they only had two weeks warning, this has been brewing for over a year...

Put the blame on Apple. They did not make it official until a week ago. You don’t know until Apple officially announces it. Look no further than what happened last year. Everyone and their brother were wrong about the iphone 5 being released. They assumed and now they look like asses. Over 99% of the ipad apps will look like crap come Friday because Apple wanted to play cat and mouse. I bet this will be the one negative knock against it when sites review it. 2nd negative is the increase app foot size for “retina” enabled apps without an increase in storage space. You now have to pay $100 to $200 more for the same amount of content (6 non-retina apps could equal 2 to 3 retina apps).
Anyway you cut it a 1024x768 app will look like crap on a 2048x1536 display. Just imagine iphone apps running on that display. It will be a pixilated disaster.

Agreed... the only regret is camera.

I had rather take better Face time camera ...

While I agree that I am not going to tote my "new iPad" around for picture taking & video capturing... I wish it at least had the same cameras that my little iPhone 4S had. To me, that's the only regret I have about the new iPad.

I'll be taking a lot of my videos with the iPhone 4S and transferring it to the iPad for editing regardless of the camera quality. However, having only a 5 megapixel camera does seem lacking compared to the 8 megapixel iPhone 4S.

You're right, the pictures posted aren't good. Is this because of the iPad "3" or because the person taking them was in a low light situation which will introduce that type of grain? I'm sure iPad 4 will have a flash in it which will help in lower light/indoor shots...

Take a look at undoctored iPad 3 photo taken by someone taking a photo in the right circumstance.

Also, here is Apple's gallery of photos and video taken with the new iPad.

What surprised me is they went all-out with the rear-facing camera, without improving the front-facing camera at all.

The front facing camera doesn't need improvement. It's already a WiFi challenge. Increasing resolution would further burden your WiFi and internet connection system and likely have excessive dropouts.
