Here in Switzerland they're giving away a Galaxy Tab with every purchase of a Samsung vacuum cleaner. No joke.

Clever marketing. Reduce the perceived sucky-ness of the tablet by bundling it with something that sucks more! :D

(Painfully shallow acting in the ad, BTW.)

When you feel so much need to prove your self as good or better than someone else, you're just pointing out how everyone (including yourself) thinks the other one is the Leader!

Any good Marketeer would told you NEVER do that!

Apple was able to pull it off with the I'm a Mac and I'm a PC but with a different approach (and clever): Humor in a figurative way.

I think it shows the complete opposite. You have to have confidence in your product to compare it to others.

I recall an ad they did with the S3 I think it was, comparing features. There were three or four rows of Android features, and about 6 features for iOS. Like this ad, its overdone with puffery, therefore not taken seriously. Another take for the S3 ad was to have many iOS features listed, but more for the S3. And in this ad, complement the iPad, but reap more praise on the Samsung. That perceives a "review" and it shows the winner, which will then be perceived by the masses as factually better.

Come down? You mean Calm Down. I am an Apple user, I finished school! ;)

Seriously? Like with like is a fair comparison, not this years model compared to last years, especially in tech

Again with the logic fail.:p So here's what you're essentially saying. Samsung should wait to advertise their current products. Wait until after Apple releases their future product so the comparison will be fair? Do you realize how idiotic that sounds?

It's advertising. What company goes, "Hey, since our competitor is releasing a new product soon, lets hold off on advertising our new product until after our competitor releases their new product. We don't know what it will be like or when it will be available, but we should just not advertise until then."? That's a pretty smart idea right?

Clearly no bias

Exactly

Does samsung have commercials without apple ?

Yes.

For those that see the outdated comparison its a fail. In fact a reversal. As Dave.UK said, if the company has the better product they should be happy to compare it. That says it all, based on your points, they are not prepared to compare like with like. However, the masses wont have a clue. But in the masses case, the iPad name rules. The masses may seem perturbed that the perceived better product, the iPad, is not the best, and as the iPad is a brand, an icon, they will likely check, and find that, yes it is best. The problem Samsung has is that their products are just products, Like a Ford Laser 235. Forgotten tomorrow, but Apple, iPad, these are brands that everyone recognises. You need to attack those in a more professional manner, to give the masses a perception of it being better. Puffery is wasted targeting an iconic brand

I don't usually subscribe to calling people iSheep, but to say a lack of multitasking "helps people to be more focused and productive" was pretty funny to read.

Well, we are only buying this stuff. We can moan or do whatever but eventually will never be listened.

If someone needs multitasking, there is an option to buy a laptop or mentioned samsung or windows tablet. End of the story.

I don't care if iPad has it or not.

It's a conscious choice.

Samsung might have a great product, but...

a) Not an Apple product

b) Does not run iOS

c) Runs Android

Game over. Nothing else matters.

Yup. For 85% of people those would indeed seem to be the criteria for purchase.

What Samsung keeps failing to understand, is that its all about the experience. All of Apple's secrets lie in the experience you have with their products. Long gone are the times where specs matter. Nobody wants to brag about how many rams and terraherz their product has anymore like we used to do 10 years ago with our PCs.

Today its about simplicity. Apple's products are clean and void of distinct character, making it possible for the consumer to bring his own character into the product.

Whereas Samsung's (and most of the other products out there) define the consumer for what they hold in their hands with a certain "style". Imagine it as if you would wear a blank t-shirt which brings out your own character, and a t-shirt with picture that pre-defines you to only something that you like. This results in the consumer getting tired of that said product (need for change), quickly looking for something else to replace it with. Just like all of Android's different iOS's...

;)

That was a terrible analogy. Sorry but it was. But I can be just as bad.
Imagine it as if you wear a blank t-shirt. That t-shirt is a one size fits all. It has to be worn a certain way or not at all. Some people like it. Imagine a different t-shirt. You can get it in small, medium, large, or XL. Depending on your mood, you can leave the shirt plain, change it's color, or change that picture you mentioned to anything you want. Some people like it.

Both analogies, yours and mine, are horrible. No debating that. At least mine resembles a more realistic view, imo of course.;)

Multitasking alone makes it better. Accept it guys.

Sad but true. And what's funnier is the fanboys claim its not a big deal, but when Apple finally gets around to actually giving people multitasking, the fanboys will call it MIRACULOUS!

I'm getting sick of these adverts, not just Samsung but from other competitors. Why can't they just advertise their products for the features that they have and let it stand on it's own two feet instead of always having to compare it directly with the iPhone 5S or the iPad Air.

And yes, Apple perhaps did start it with the Mac vs PC ads a while back. But the beauty of those ads was that Apple was generic about it, they didn't target specific manufacturers or particular devices. Just shows how desperate the competition must be if they're always attacking specific Apple products directly.

Fanboys....lol never change. "Durrr when Apple did it I wasn't bothered by it, because of...reasons. But now everyone needs to stop picking on poor Apple. Leave Apple alone!"

A lot of words but you never answered the questions. What sense does it make to not advertise a product you released? What sense does it make wait until your competition releases its product before you advertise your own? You don't know what they are releasing so what do you focus your advertising on? Those questions aren't about Samsung and Apple. They are general business questions.

Good post!! What if my T Shirt fit better, worked well with my pants, had beautifully fitting gussets, it just worked!
yeah, ok, add me to the bad analogy group!

Sounds like a fanboy attacking fanboys to me

The irony is strong.

As a consumer, this ad would do nothing for me. I don't care what other people on the street think. I do my own do telogen's to find out which product is better for me.

However, this ad may serve Samsung well with the low information crowd

And by NYC Street-Goers we must assume actors. What puzzles me about Android tablets is that I never seem them in the wild. Anyplace I go Starbucks, Bookstores, Airport anytime I see a tablet its always an iPad.

Folks must be buying Android tablets but I have no clue what they use them for.

And what if it fit better for you but you still criticized others for choosing something else or were determined to point out how since yours fits better for you, everything else was crap?

bad analogies are fun

Folks are actually not buying many tablets anymore, period. This "pepsi challenge-esque"poorly done commercial is just Samsung's way of trying to get s couple more sales.

...so, you really complain about the outcome of this "survey" called advertisement? This must be one of those days...

My Opinion: I would be glad if Samsung could get more real marketshare! Really. Innovation is lead by competition. Apple needs to spend its money on research and development, scholarships and some fundamental research in Battery/Display/Digitizer technology. Go Samsung! :)

I see a pattern here. Every post you run a putdown phrase, good marketing, as it perceives following readers that the post you criticise is wrong. Good work.

In answer to your question this thread is about an ad, and the whys and wherefores of that ad. I explained my take on why this form of ad wont work, in that they focus on the other product being negative. As I explained, this is a standard IT product, that carries a low level of branding, targeting a product with an extremely high level of branding. You have now changed tack, and are focussing your criticism of my post on general business, whole different topic if you wish to have a standard product and target another standard product. IMO there needs to be a perceived factual comparison if you wish to target a big brand, otherwise its washed off as clear puffery by the masses

I love posts like this. Yes - clearly what you see if the "rule"

Guess what - I'm in NYC - I see it all. I see iPads, Kindles, Kindle Fires, Samsung, Windows, and other tablets all the time. I also see a complete variety of phones.

Any place I go. I travel a lot too. Maybe you see what you want to see. Or filter out anything that isn't familiar to you. No idea.

Can you answer this for me. Are you speaking as a consumer. Or someone who has knowledge and experience IN the advertising industry...
