When Apple does release split screen I will be able to re-read all the trash talking comments regarding split screen on the right side of my iPad and compare it to all the praising comments of split screen and how Apple got it "just right" on the left side of my iPad.

Isn't that the reason why we all want multitasking, so that we can prove people online wrong a lot faster or is that just me?

I am all for better multitasking, but I honestly don't think that split-screen is the right way moving forward.

When you think about why people love the iPad, it's because it's essentially a blank slate where the device literally becomes the app for just that moment. It's an immersive experience which I feel will be compromised by the ability to add multiple apps to the display.

I feel extensibility is the better way moving forward. Allow extensions to let me do more while still staying within the app, and I feel this is a better option for getting more done on a tablet whose size doesn't really feel optimal for the management of multiple, resizable windows anyways.

I mean, just look at the first advertisement, where the video takes up less than ¼ of the total screen area after being split-screened. This is clearly not optimal for sharing multiple 16:9 videos, so why bother?

Not sure how anyone could defend Apple here. The omission of multi-tasking in the same screen on the iPad is sheer stupidity. I jail broke my first ipad a couple of years ago and there was a great multi-tasking program on Cydia, but its not the same as native programming. And that's just the software....

I had a go with the new Surface 3 last weekend at Best Buy. Aside from Windows, which I hate but could get used to again, the hardware is good to go with a full Intel i3 processor, 256GB SSD, MicroSD slot and soon to arrive docking station with USB ports.

There is no reason why Apple couldn't implement any of these, but has refused to add any kind of external storage options that might hinder the sale of their flagship models.

+1

This ad makes two important points:

1) It's time for split screen multitasking. The technology is there. Apple's A7 should be more than capable of handling it, although they will need to bump up the RAM.

2) AMOLED screens tend to have higher contrast ratios and darker black levels. That doesn't make them better screens but there are noticeable differences, especially in dim light.

Oh no! Samsung made fun of Apple.

Crying-Baby-Natural-High-for-Some-Moms.jpg

Honestly, Samsung is pulling away in Apple. Maybe not in sales, but in features and trying new things out. Same thing goes for Google. Apple is like a Microsoft of the 2000s. They have market share and cash, but don't push things. They wait and let other people try things out and push technology. Then they come in an and try to steal the market. Im sorry to say, but the true innovation and magic died with Steve. Watching and waiting on Apple is like watching paint dry. The fun and magic is gone....

They've always done this. Always. Don't do it until you can do it right.

Samsung's new motto: If you can't beat 'em, bash 'em.

Did you even watch the video? or just posted based off of the sensationalist headline?

The non Galaxy tab shown in the video doesn't look like an iPad, and the comparison voice-over just describes the differences between LCD and Super AMOLED. No attempt to make the tablet in the comparison graphic look like anything but a generic tablet. No mention of Apple or iPad.

A typical iPad Dad would give his kid his old iPad. Problem solved

So spend $500 extra. Cool.

----------

What kind of poor family don't own a TV at home? Stupid ad.

Maybe the family doesn't have a TV in the kitchen...

----------

I don't know about anybody else, but the kid looks crossed eye when he's watching the samsung tablet... If that product has that effect on people... they can keep it.

And yes, when I'm with a bunch of bros, I like to watch the same movie on my iPad instead of my tv! Make perfect sense!

What if you're on a plane and don't want to bring multiple devices?

----------

Oh I didn't even bother watching it...

Exactly

----------

The problem is they are bashing Apple *customers* more than Apple products, if you really think about it. Think of Apple's ads were families are having a great time, laughing and smiling, and then there's Samsung's ad where the dad can't keep his kid from crying... which one leaves that lasting impression? Is it a scare tactic creating fear in young parents, telling them that they need to have a split-screen tablet to keep their kids happy? Sad ads.... poor taste.

I missed it where they mentioned Apple or showed an Apple product...

----------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some of the comments above prove how immature some Apple fans are. Don't get me wrong: I love Apple products and think their premium prices deserve their qualities but I don't trash talk against its competitors.

Shame on you.

I also don't want to see the monopoly of a single tech company, as a consumer. More competition makes consumers happier and makes prices reasonable.

:apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple:

Too logical for this forum

----------

So, instead of focusing on the kid and using the app to play with the kid, meaning quality father-son time, the dad wants to split the screen so the kid can have the kid app, and he can have his dad app and they can ignore each other?

Am I missing something in this message? :roll eyes:

Oh, yes, and Apple's "parenting" tv ad shows the parents all focused on using kid apps to play with the kids, help the kids, engage the kids.... Hmm....

Ignore? Really? That kid doesn't know the concept of ignore. Apple's fitness commercial doesn't show any kids with their parents - the parents must be off doing something vile!

----------

IMO, current AMOLEDs are superior to LCD. However an iPad Airs screen is hardly terrible, and I highly doubt you'd miss an entire character in a movie on an iPad's IPS LCD. Not a fan of these ads though. The iPad is a better, more thought out product. Ecosystem, build quality, and app quality are significantly more important than a pretty screen.

What about OS features? You totally missed the point of the first video...

Samsung's quarterly results in the Mobile Segments have not been looking so great lately and it shows. They are getting more and more aggressive in targeting Apple. But they should rather concentrate on their competitors in the Android segment, as other manufacturers start to offer better products.

Desperate times for them it seems. They come across as trying too hard.

I missed it where they mentioned Apple or showed an Apple product...

People must be remembering the "Wall Hugger" commercial with iPhones... iPhones everywhere.

You're right though... Samsung must be talking about Asus tablets or Amazon tablets in this ad.

Yeah... that's it ;)

I just dont see the use case for split screen on a tablet...

Tablets (and specifically what Apple originally released the iPad intended for) are for accomplishing tasks on the go with a portable handheld device. Any split screen is just going to make it harder to see each task... its actually easier to switch between apps and see them both full screen... course this is what i do on my computer also - its not like any OS really lets you use 2 apps at the same time (best you can do is make front app window smaller so you can see another apps window, but you still cant interact with both without switching between them).

I really would not want this on my phone or tablet, especially for the use case depicted in the video - seriously who tries to watch 2 shows at once (didnt anyone learn anything from how PIP has failed to gain any usefullness?) - and then he gets a call and both videos keep playing while it is ringing? ROFL - thank you Apple for having basic common sense and realizing people would want everything to be paused when a call comes in... And I actually am on the fence about whether I like the new message notifications that no longer pause everything (the notification at the top can sometimes distract me and i miss some of a video and have to rewind or lose my game)

Until Apple does it in 2015 and then it's innovative, right?

----------

The only issues I have with Samsung ads is they never show any real life situations. Who sits next to each other and watches the same movie on different tablets in the same room. I could think of million other ways to show the benefits of a better screen. All the ads do is show that all Samsung user do is carry around their tablets just to bash iPad users.

Do you have zero imagination?

-airplane
-video conference
-multi-angle videos
-showing two different finalizations of edited videos in a pitch meeting or really any type of video comparisons (before/after form of baseball swing)

----------

Why the hell would you want to watch two things at once?

see above

----------

Every tech company that ever existed was great at coming up with ideas and new features. Few and far between ever implement them.

Great, google has google glass and self driving cars great. Where is the product I can buy and works easily? I'll give them praise when I see it for sale.

Apple for example, began the smartphone market with the iphone in 2007. This kick started the post pc era. Could the iphone do anything many companies had prototyped already? If bet not one feature in the first iphone was a totally original apple idea.
But....
It was imemented correctly and easily and nailed the smartphone concept. Remember the Nokia N95? That could do I belive everything the iphone could and was out ages before it.

My point it, coming up with ideas and features is important and it's excellent for general progress in everything.

But imementarion is what makes a product notable and worthwhile and truely "important" for consumers.

lol, Apple "began the smartphone market"? ok...

----------

Haha, what a realistic scenario. Who ever wanted to play two movies simultaneously on a tablet??

This is why Samsung has these commercials. Some people need their hands held. You really can't think of a reason to view two videos simultaneously?

----------

I will take the iPad screen any day over some OLED screen.

You do realize Apple is going to release OLED screens soon, right?

----------

Guy1: Hey you wanna watch a movie?
Guy2: Sure, here I have a good one on my tablet. (turns on "The Departed")
Guy1: Oh wow, awesome I love that movie!!! (turns on "The Departed")
Guy2: What are you doing?
Guy1: Watching "The Departed" with you, silly.
Guy2: Buy I have it on my tablet already.
Guy1: That's alright, this is normal behavior and a realistic use case.
Guy2: I feel like I'm in a Samsung commercial.
Guy1: You are.

Image

So rewrite that when there's only one tablet available. Come on, you can do it.

No where in the ad did it say Apple or iPad. And no where did it hint at users of other tablets being stupid. How does saying other tablets have poor colour or contrast or poor battery life equate to Samsung calling the users dumb?

You're too smart to be posting here.

----------

My 55" 1080p HDTV only allows me to watch one show at a time, so please explain to me why I need my 9" iPad to play 2 shows concurrently?

I guarantee you have PIP...but apparently that concept needs to be explained to you.

----------

Do as many ads as you want. I will never purchase a Samsung branded product for the rest of my life.

Your Apple product has Samsung branded products inside of it...

If Apple ads multitasking in iOS 8 this ad will end up being very disposable.

I can still see the apple bashers saying "they copied android" even though Samsung's implementation is very app dependent and clunky as all hell.

Apple (trusting them on past implementations) will add it to the SDK in such a way that will make it easy for devs to implement and a breeze for users to take advantage of. Whereas a lot of Samsung/android users probably have no idea this feature even exists in their product.

I don't get it?

First commercial: why do I want to watch a video that is only like 1/4 of it's normal size? Plus he has a Samsung Galaxy phone. Since they want the baby to be happy and watch a video why is the phone not being used or why doesn't he just use the phone while the kid watches the video on the iPad.

Second commercial: I am trying to figure out what iPad screen Samsung was using or where they even thought this was true. Because I sure have not ever noticed this at all. Matter of fact my iPad's screen and colors on the screen sure seem to look a lot more real and vibrant than most other tablets I have seen.

I have laughed sometimes at some of your commercials Samsung, but these two I am totally lost on. That make zero since to me and doesn't help me want to buy the product at all.

lol at the stealth trolling from macrumors staff at getting the hardcore all bumhurt on a regular basis with these types of posts

Oh for sure... 90% of the content these days is Apple v Android fanboy battles. Sad times. I remember when we were a closer group and it was just tools coming out with anti-Apple rants.

Be interesting to find out what percentage of posters are 'real' these days.

These desperate confusing ads are not going to stop your decline in profits Samsing.

You will continue your multi-quarter slide until you create something truly great that people want.

Samsung tablets with split screen ?

Not gonna save you any more than those silly ads that tried to convince us that young people preferred Galaxy phones.

Remember that? And then all the stats prove teenagers and young people in the US vastly prefer iPhones.

Samsung's ads feel like their wishes of how people think and behave.

Your Apple product has Samsung branded products inside of it...

If you have DirecTV, though your TV probably has PIP, you can't actually use it unless you upgrade to one of DirecTV's Genie boxes. And I don't believe PIP works at all with Comcast.

It's pretty much accepted that Apple reinvented the smartphone market. 'Invented', no. But it gets really old when people try to minimise the impact they had. I worked in the industry at the time and smartphones literally turned on a dime within the two years after the iPhone launch.

Also, if you want to argue the value of splitscreens, you could have used a better example than video... I really can't think of a reason why I would want to watch two videos at the same time. How does that even work? I have two audio tracks playing on top of each other? I just tried this by pulling up one video in one browser on my computer, and another in another browser... Pointless. I'm sure it's useful for videos for SOME people, but not all.

Now, if you tried to tell me that it might be useful for editing, comparisons, having email + a video open, etc, etc, now THOSE I would understand.

Lol, poor Samsung. I think everyone has realized that the iPhone and iPad bashing has gotten really old. It was cute a couple years ago, but now, its pathetic. What's next? They will bash the iPad for being too heavy? smh.
