Honest question: has Samsung developed any innovative smartphone features that have stuck around for more than a couple years?

Yes there are a few but they also trimmed it down so it could be faster.

Expandable storage, 6gigs of ram, best screen on the market, bluetooth Spen, 4000 battery and one of the best cameras

Honest question: has Samsung developed any innovative smartphone features that have stuck around for more than a couple years?

I think the issue is that Samsung doesn’t seem to have any long-term vision when it comes to smartphones.

There’s rumblings of Face ID allowing for people to control their iOS devices via gestures and glances, which sounds similar to a feature the S4 had (but which was also half-baked and never iterated on).

So while it feels like everything that Apple does is with a purpose and gradually building up towards the next big thing, the features that Samsung does introduce feel very random and hastily cobbled together. Like they are there just to make up the numbers.

And when you look at the overall product strategy of both companies, I guess it kinda shows.

As an iPhone user who has no intention of leaving iOS I have to say I’ve been impressed by the Note 9. The device looks sleek and the features bring some excitement to the market. I’m of the opinion Apple implement software features better than anybody but I wish we saw the same kind of innovation in new iPhones. Love the S-Pen remote and nice to see they haven’t done what other Android manufacturers have done too and put in a notch.

The Apple Watch lets you control your camera as well.

It does music playback, can unlock the phone and can be used as a pointer/controller for powerpoint presentations.

I really hope these rumours of pencil support for the new iPhones are true. I know they wouldn't have all these features but having a stylus would be a start.

A watch makes more sense when it comes to controlling your phone remotely, to be honest. Though I suppose I am reaching here as I am effectively comparing a $350 accessory to something that comes bundled with the note phone by default.

It could just be the ability to use the existing Apple Pencil with the 2018 iPhones (and even then, that feels very niche). I don’t see Apple releasing a smaller pencil for use with the plus iPhone, but I have been wrong before.

So one is holding their phone up with one hand to take a selfie. Second hand presses stylus button to take photo. How does that work with the Apple Watch?

You wouldn’t need to use the stylus to take a selfie if you are already holding your phone.

The use case I am envisioning is when the phone is set up some distance away from you and you need a remote camera trigger. The watch also has the slight advantage of showing you what the camera sees.

The stick has its uses. Just feels like people are trying to hype it up to be something more than it really is just because the iPhone doesn’t have it.

It's because the note is unwieldy so it's easier to use the pen to take a selfie.

I'm just looking at the features, i suppose they are useful to some people. However I can use my apple watch to control audio play back on my iPhone, home pod and Apple TV.

Very similar to the Note 8 - looks like Samsung phoned this one in. *ahem*

Actually it has thicker bezels.

You can already use a stylus with the iPhone. There’s just no compartment for one, and Apple will never add a compartment for one. I have a stylus built-in to the tip of the pen I carry to meetings. But a stylus is NOT a Pencil. A shorter Pencil that’s the same length as the 6.5” iPhone would be cool, along with a case that carried them together.

I’m not sure why you’d need a remote trigger to take a selfie. I usally click the volume buttons. The sad part is, the current Apple design makes it impossible to stand the phone up on its own with a case, or propping it against something. I can sit my SE on its edge, bottom or side, and then use a remote trigger to take a photo from any flat surface.

Yeah I know, I use it a lot when taking group shots or when I prop my iPhone on something and need a remote.

I was referring more to the fact the s-pen can be used as a remote for presentation purposes etc.

The Pencil has at least one control button I think. So there’s no reason why a developer couldn’t access it for custom functions when not being used as a stylus, unless Apple prohibits it. It’s a good idea.

The Apple Pencil doesn’t have any buttons on it.

The third party ones are crap. I paid $80 for one and it’s rubbish.

I set the self timer to 3 or 10 seconds. 10 seconds gives plenty of time to setup a group selfie. 3 seconds works very well with two people.

Timers are fine. Much nicer to just snap the picture when you’re ready rather than standing there guessing, much less when someone inevitably gets hit by a bug and have to do it all over again.

Depends on your needs. The stylus in the cheap promotional pen I was given works well for my needs. But the iPhone doesn’t really need a stylus, that’s the whole point.

No I am not an artist but plenty of artists use an S pen or a surface pen for drawing. There have also been Wacom tablets with Wacom styli for artists long before the iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil. Apple also promote the Pencil for taking notes which is what I use it for.

I’m not saying Apple don’t create great devices, they do. Many of which I own and love. However to try and make out Apple have ‘invented’ all these features is just wrong.

I don't think you are right. Most serious artist will not use a stylus because it is way to small. I recommend to try them to feel the difference. That's also the reason why Steve Jobs is still right even if his words about the stylus get quoted a lot these days. For the normal usage of a phone a stylus is not helpful. If the software is fine one can do everything with the fingers. On an iPad things can change.

The timer works great. For me it’s better than holding something in your hand to take a picture. Even using the spen go snap a picture doesn’t guarantee you won’t have to redo the picture, is what I am getting at.

With the remote pen, you can keep snapping multiple shots. You can't do that with timer.

Can't believe the length iPhone fan goes through...

Great. You can keep snapping crappy pictures because you can’t focus because youre trying to do two things at once. What android fans think of innovation makes me laugh.
