I guess I will just be the first one to give this comment:
uh-oh, this is not good, I hope Steve is still around

Having said that, I think Apple is still enjoying the highest profit margin of all smartphone manufacturers, no? So from that perspective, Apple's organic growth is probably the most solid of the entire field. But yea, marketshare is still important 'cause otherwise AAPL ain't gonna get a bigger slice of the pie either.

... indicated that Samsung had shipped over 20 million smartphones in the third quarter, compared to Apple's announced sales of 17.1 million iPhones.

Sell-in (units shipped) DOES NOT equal Sell-through (actual sales).

This "news" item is based on a fallacy.

I'm happy with this...

I'm pretty much married to iOS platform and don't want to start over with andriod. But this is the kind of thing that will hopefully get Apple to shore up the holes in iOS.

E.g., yesterday I was dying for Siri to turn-by-turn directions.

That was just "reportedly." Now we know its definite, and by a large margin too.

Yeah - but opinions coming from MR posters are going to be the exact same whether rumor or fact. I can pretty much guarantee there will be little different between that thread and this one. Want to take bets?

Doesn't stop the fact that Apple have possibly the most elegant phone ever made:

... and the OS is just as good.

I used iOS way back in 2008. I went to Android cause I heard it was good. I got myself HTC Desire and then got a Nexus S, but **** those phones were unproductive and useless. Applications were ugly and you couldn't find most that were meaningful. The productivity is zero unless you love widgets; that's all you got there or may be nice skins to make you happy.

WP7 was great, but had severe battery issues. Apps are good but monotonous. OS was still not mature enough.

I have been using iPhone4S for a week. It's the best OS I have ever used. Others are far behind.

This might sound biased but I have used a lot of other devices and they just don't make the match. iOS is simply wonderful.

You're probably right so no bet. I'm happy, only because fanboys won't be able to be as smug as they normally are.

Shipped same as Sales?

My thoughts exactly. I question this reporting style over and over and over again. Shipped vs. Sales.

Samsung shipped 1 million generation 1 Galaxy Tabs last year. A lenovo exec leaked that they only sold 20,000. So WTF does shipped mean? Best way to find out, how long does a product remain in inventory? Apple's inventory is a few days at most, sometimes a few hours with hot selling items.

Biased? Really? Noooo, how can anyone think they're biased those claims so exagerated?

Rather, the carriers that subsidize the cost when signing up for a contract practically give them away. Or people just prefer Samsung in major markets (like Korea and Japan).

Samsung has cheaper phones than Apple. So, it makes perfect sense. If you go total $ amount, it's going to be different story. No wonder Apple is still selling 3GS.

Not much of a surprise. If Apple was over Samsung it'd be embarrassing. :D I mean, how many different models do they sell? Compared to Apple's 5 (2 of which are no longer distributed by Apple)?

I'm not sure any of it is "definite". Samsung doesn't release numbers so I assuming the last quarter report was based on estimations and various other methods and they've just added 40%+ to that number, no? If they were at all off last quarter then these numbers would also be wrong. Remember how often analysts get these numbers wrong? Every single quarter. However, I have zero doubt that Samsung has overtaken Apple by a large margin, but I wouldn't take these numbers as 100% exact.

Also, samcraig is definitely right. I can guarantee we will see an almost exact replica of the last thread.

Does this mean I have to sell my new iPhone and buy a Samsung to be with the "in" crowd?

Dang, thats crazy. No wonder Apple is trying to slow them down any way they can including court cases.

Both companies make some really nice looking hardware.
