Let's take aside the "Apple vs Samsung" debate for a moment... can anyone else see future stores being nothing but company stores? Best Buy is turning into a mall-within-a-mall.

Now imagine a Best Buy in an actual mall.

Yo dawg...

Wowow.. another samsung idea to copy apples

No original ideas, so copy everyone else.

I would never buy their products.

Imitation is the finest form of flattery. While they may lose market share, all this copying only reinforces Apple's image as a cultural icon.

Samsung has had in store shops for years in a lot of different countries. Even before the smartphone wars. The US is just catching up. No one is stealing anyone.

You all need to travel more.

LG has had them as well.

Best Buys must be real desperate for business these days. The problem is most people will wander in and try all that Samsung may have to offer then wander over to Apples play area, and mess with Photobooth, then go home and order online tax free.

Why wouldn't people?

Quicker than getting stuff mailed.

Of course, it was original when the Apple Store within Best Buy was introduced, right?
Why wouldn't people? Well, because Best Buy now requires ID for ALL returns, even if you have a receipt. They put that information (including Address and Phone number) in a database and that database has already been hacked several times and used for identity theft. The criminals are even able to cross reference credit card numbers and run up massive charges.

Bottom line is Amazon is cheaper (yes, Best Buy will price match physical stores, occasionally, they will price match Amazon, but either way, it usually takes at least 30 minutes to get the price match approved and they will not price match, if the price is lower than their cost, which actually used to happen a lot when I did shop at Best Buy.) I don't have to hand over my ID if I return something, I am able to avoid using a credit card by using Amazon Gift Cards if I so choose or I can use a virtual card number that is only for purchasing from Amazon (something you can't do in a physical store).

I have Amazon Prime through my work, so I don't pay for the service, but get the benefits of free 2 day shipping and $3.99 overnight shipping (or free with a Discover card at certain times).

Additionally, I can get new items faster from Amazon, for example, the Olympus camera that I recently purchased, Amazon got it well before Best Buy did, so I was able to use the camera while Best Buy still hadn't gotten it in yet.

Do physical stores have a place? Yes, but I think it will be more unique merchandise that you can't readily get online or things that aren't practical to buy online, such as groceries that need to be refrigerated, etc.

In Canada they don't! :)

I buy expensive electronics in FutureShop and Best Buy purely because of their very generous exchange / returns policy.

I agree that Best Buy don't get products in particularly fast - a few times I've bought cheaper electronics from elsewhere - including Amazon because BB or FS haven't stocked it. ( FutureShop is owned by the same parent company as BB ).

Why wouldn't people? Well, because Best Buy now requires ID for ALL returns, even if you have a receipt.

This is a very smart move by Samsung.

I am an Apple fan, but this concept is excellent and should be used by more companies.

It actually organizes the products better than Best Buy does.

I think this is beneficial to consumers, and should be applauded, regardless of how you feel about a particular company.

I for one do not see Samsung as just a copycat, but as a company that implements proven, successful tactics in reaching consumers, regardless of whether or not the idea is originally theirs. If it works, use it!

I could care less about who copies who.

It seems that if we got rid of all the 'analyst news' and 'digitimes reports' rubbish we'd be left with very little to read. Maybe Tim Cook really has doubled down on security?

no.. most likely the fact that there is no imminent launch nearby.

the rumors starts coming in about a month before a launch so just give it a few months until summer launch days..

there has been more leaks than any other time on macrumors.

This can only help Best Buy and it's a smart move by Samsung. They're trying hard to capitalize on Apple's apparent loss of the coolness edge.

Can people please stop doing this. It's neither polite or productive to the discussion.
You're more than welcome to disagree with other people's opinions but perhaps you could say why you disagree so that we can have an adult conversation about it.

No.

That's what happened when you are stuck with C-grade programmers to run your tech departments. All the good A and A+ were picked clean by Apple, Google and Facebook while the remaining B grade engineers were scooped up by Microsoft. What a pity.

LOL at the predictable "the copied us!" responses.

Good move by Best Buy. The laptop/tablet space was becoming much too cluttered. The Samsung (and Apple) dedicated space will serve to serve to clean this up a bit, and make the overall consumer experience better. Also, based on that photo, the Samsung space will actually be much better than the Apple "store within a store", which hopefully will result in a new improvement initiative between Apple and Best Buy.

I suppose it depends where you live, there's a BB not 10 minutes from my current location, and no car or public transport required.

Apple DID NOT invent the store within a store concept.

No, Apple did not invent the store-within-a-store concept. Neither did they invent the personal computer, the GUI, the mouse, the mp3 player, the smartphone, the tablet, or sliced bread. But they DID invent ways to make them useable by normal people, and that's what counts. And normal people will look at the Samsung display above, just like that poster showing what Samsung smartphones looked like before and after the iPhone, and think "copycat."

So you lose anyway, no matter how you try to spin it.

Does Best Buy/Samsung not think it would be a good idea to experiment with the concept before spending so much on it? They're hiring several dedicated staff for each location... That's going to cost a lot of money.

With Cupertino as Samsung's R&D organization, they have plenty left over to throw around for marketing.

Extremely welcome - am I the only one who finds it absolutely pointless and absurd that all of Best Buy's smartphone display models are dummies that don't even work???

So I know how big the thing is, so what? I want to be able to actually TRY all these devices out....it'd be nice to do so during my normal Best Buy walkabouts versus having to hit up an AT&T store.

Maybe I thought my counter-argument of "No" was substantive enough. I hardly see it as impolite, particularly for internet standards.

I think they all learned another lesson from Apple now;

'The more special or different you products are, the more likely you have to sell it yourself.'

I think Apple discovered they have reached that point during the Lampshade Mac period. It seems Samsung decided their products now warrant such approach, reaching the same point Sony was six years ago when they opened Sony Style shop.

Nokia, Acer, LG and Lenovo all have theirs in Thailand today. Hardly any tech product distributors in Thailand that aren't new from China don't have their own stores today.

In your opinion, how do you tell that your products and lineup have grown to the point that you can't let retailers and distributors handle them on their own anymore?

Ah, Best Buy.

The farmers market of technology, where every vendor gets their own fruit stand.

An excellent analogy, Mac21ND. And I think we are going to see more and more of this.

I went to the mall last night to get the Bodyguardz protective film installed on my 13" MBP. I walked around the mall while the installation was being done and realized how empty it was.

Now this was a Wednesday night. But regardless the tenants still had to pay their lease for Wednesday night and pay their staff.

Taking a step back for a moment, over the past decade, people have become much for comfortable shopping over the Internet. The "bricks and clicks" thing was great for a while. But people are even buying tires over the Internet.

Retail sales space is expensive. For retail sales space to pay off it is location, location, location. I think we are going to see going to see more of this space converted to a place where the customer can pick up and touch the product rather than a place to make the sale.

As for how Samsung is going to pay for it, Samsung has a huge marketing budget. I'm sure they will view this as a marketing cost.

Apart from the fact that it's a Store in a Store in Best Buy with a contemporary, minimalist design, selling phones and tablets.

are you suggesting that Samsung should make it all cluttered and selling cookies instead to not hurt your feelings?
