Temporary stores, for temporary products, of temporary fashion, lasting a temporary success.

Extremely welcome - am I the only one who finds it absolutely pointless and absurd that all of Best Buy's smartphone display models are dummies that don't even work???

So I know how big the thing is, so what? I want to be able to actually TRY all these devices out....it'd be nice to do so during my normal Best Buy walkabouts versus having to hit up an AT&T store.

this exactly.

I have little to no idea how Best Buy manages to sell cell phones given that so many don't even work at the store.

This store concept is reminiscent of that Conan Samsung parody from a year ago.

The Samsung Smart Guy!

Wait, Samsung Stores staffs here in Thailand DO wear polo shirts with that logo! The color used here is a darker shade of blue though, mimicking Chelsea football club blue they sponsored. Look it up.

They switched from black to Chelsea FC Blue in 2009 for Asia-Pacific and the color stuck.

I think they all learned another lesson from Apple now;

'The more special or different you products are, the more likely you have to sell it yourself.'

I think Apple discovered they have reached that point during the Lampshade Mac period. It seems Samsung decided their products now warrant such approach, reaching the same point Sony was six years ago when they opened Sony Style shop.

I think they all learned something from auto dealerships. There is a reason car sales people push you to take a test drive. They realize that the probability of you purchasing a vehicle goes up significantly once you actually touch the product.

I wonder if this will be the same thing as the Apple store, where you can play, buy, and get stuff repaired? It will be interesting to see who serves in these stores, if they are part of the Geek Squad I do not think this will work very well.

Apple has one of their reps in the Apple sections of Best Buy Stores, so I wonder what BB and Samsung will do. Would be nice to get stuff repaired without having to send them in and wait?

And another reason Samsung wants to move to the "store-in-store" model.

Big Box stores can't afford working display models. Apple and Samsung can.

All the computers, ipods, ipads and iphones work in an Apple store. My guess is that Samsung realizes it needs to do the same thing to get people to buy more Samsung products.

Samsung has had in store shops for years in a lot of different countries. Even before the smartphone wars. The US is just catching up. No one is stealing anyone.

You all need to travel more.

LG has had them as well.

This. Ive seen Samsung Booths, LG Booths, Sony Booths inside stores for years and years before Apple even announced this Best Buy deal, heck I've even seen Apple booths in other stores here in the UK before these ones in Best Buy :p

I worked there - no idea......I suppose they try and get the people who know what they are looking for, but for experience, most people have no idea what they are looking for and are at the mercy of whatever the salesperson tells them (especially when demo units don't work).

It can't be a security thing - I worked in tablets/computers and all our stuff worked. Some units had demo software, but at least you could try the damn thing out....generally speaking the iPhones are the only units that are ACTUALLY real....

Samsung Execs: "If you can't beat 'em, let's copy anything and everything :apple: does from soup to nuts."

I guess instead of :apple: geniuses they will have Samsung Sherpas or Smarties or something.

An excellent analogy, Mac21ND. And I think we are going to see more and more of this.

I went to the mall last night to get the Bodyguardz protective film installed on my 13" MBP. I walked around the mall while the installation was being done and realized how empty it was.

Now this was a Wednesday night. But regardless the tenants still had to pay their lease for Wednesday night and pay their staff.

Taking a step back for a moment, over the past decade, people have become much for comfortable shopping over the Internet. The "bricks and clicks" thing was great for a while. But people are even buying tires over the Internet.

Retail sales space is expensive. For retail sales space to pay off it is location, location, location. I think we are going to see going to see more of this space converted to a place where the customer can pick up and touch the product rather than a place to make the sale.

As for how Samsung is going to pay for it, Samsung has a huge marketing budget. I'm sure they will view this as a marketing cost.

Funny enough when I was in Latin America, they have vendors everywhere peddling their products in the supermarket.

That is pretty genius though a retail store with a prominent location just outsourcing everything to their vendors. only thing they would provide is the space and security and possibly check out.

products that are working together

Now you could wash off malware on your Samsung phones with your Samsung washing machine, store your Samsung laptops in a Samsung fridge to keep them cool, and watch your phablet pop out from the Samsung toasters, which could aslo burn discs. Seriously, Samsung, you should also make iPhone chargers...

...

Seriously, the myth that Apple invents everything is getting old.

How on earth is this idea copying Apple?!

I doubt they would choose such a ridiculous, bigheaded and cringe worthy term as "Genius".

Not much quicker. I can usually get overnight delivery from Amazon for $4 with my Prime membership. And unlike Best Buy, I can see reviews and comparisons from the comfort of my home.

1.) Getting something right away is still better than overnight. 2.) Amazon Prime costs money that many aren't interested in paying for. 3.) People can read reviews from the comfort of their home on whatever model of whatever product they want...and then drive 10 minutes to BestBuy to go get it right away.

There's still a need for retailers like BestBuy.

That roll out sounds a lot more aggressive than I was expecting. Does Best Buy/Samsung not think it would be a good idea to experiment with the concept before spending so much on it? They're hiring several dedicated staff for each location... That's going to cost a lot of money.

They already (sort of) did a smaller rollout. Outside of the iPhone, the Samsung phones have historically been the only phones with a small kiosk dedicated to them. There have also been smaller kiosks with Samsung branded tablets.

The large difference between Samsung and Apple is that Apple's "store within a store" is really based around their Mac and, to a lesser extent, the iPad. They have a completely different part of the store for iPhones and even iPods. Samsung "store within a store" is going to be 100% dedicated to their mobile devices, I believe.

Saying you get malware on Android is the same as saying you get malware on OS X. It's possible, but in real-life, it doesn't happen.

guys, apple did not invent the store within a store. Just like they didn't invent end caps. Every manufacturer wants their product in an ideal location and demo'd and they will pay for it, as they should. Different topic, but I know HP just recently paid for HHGregg to redo their entire outdated digital centers (the entire center for all products), but in return they get their exclusive section.

I for one can't believe samsung would try to promote their products. I also can't believe best buy would try and promote a product they make larger profit margins on. Ridiculous.

That's why there is a cash registers specifically in the samsung store. Best buy would love to sell a ton of samsung tablets and TVs as the profit margins are much better for them.

People that shop solely on Amazon are aiming to shoot themselves in the foot. Amazon wants nothing more than to put brick and mortar stores out of business. Their CEO has even essentially said this, and they are even willing to sell at a loss to do this. All that we really have left is Best Buy, in terms of a dedicated electronics dealer. Once they close up shop, Amazon can do what they want with their prices. If this happens, you can bet prime wont be what it is. And that free shipping on bulky tvs? bye bye. But this is America. I can save $10!!!!!!! SOLD!!!!!!!!

Nokia, Acer, LG and Lenovo all have theirs in Thailand today. Hardly any tech product distributors in Thailand that aren't new from China don't have their own stores today.

In your opinion, how do you tell that your products and lineup have grown to the point that you can't let retailers and distributors handle them on their own anymore?

Great question...I don't really know. But I think it may relate to how popular your products are, as well as having a particular portfolio (or number) of products.

Apple is a marketing genius, and Samsung has clearly studied how Apple has been able to reach consumers and insert a positive perception of their products.

Samsung's most recent adverts show how their product is useful, a key component in Apple ads (even if the idea may not be originally theirs).

I would love to see something similar from the Google Nexus brand: a single place where I can interact with all their products. I'd find it useful to go to Best Buy and go to the Apple section, then Samsung, then Nexus, and REALLY do comparison shopping. Nowadays this process is more cumbersome than not. But the store within a store concept could be cool if implemented like Apple (and now Samsung) has.

Why wouldn't people? Well, because Best Buy now requires ID for ALL returns, even if you have a receipt. They put that information (including Address and Phone number) in a database and that database has already been hacked several times and used for identity theft. The criminals are even able to cross reference credit card numbers and run up massive charges.

Do physical stores have a place? Yes, but I think it will be more unique merchandise that you can't readily get online or things that aren't practical to buy online, such as groceries that need to be refrigerated, etc.

Most credible banks and credit card companies have protection built in that will absolve you from any liability for fraudulent charges. And I actually order groceries that need to be refrigerated online, ha. It's called Peapod by Stop & Shop here in Boston.
