Nobody cares about spec sheets on their phones, except people who only care about spec sheets on their phones. For everyone else, speed is how the thing works in real life. My iPhone 4S is not the fastest phone out there, on paper, but if every app opens instantly and there's never any lag using the thing, why should I care? The things that matter most to me is battery life, that it supports the latest iOS and all the apps I want to use, and I can fit the thing in my pocket.

In the same time, the size is it's weakest point (IMHO), as the same iPhone 5 seems to be almost too large for me as the phone (i'd wish to have some thinner and lighter 4S like device).

Yay! I'm not alone haha! Give me the exact same design as the iPhone 5 but with a 3.5" screen anyday :D But I'm also hopeful for the rumoured cheaper iPhone as that may answer all our needs? And cost less :)

Apple fan boys are like apple themselves they are scared of change. Android does have true multi tasking on my s3 and note 2 I can pop up a video and txt and surf the web or I can use multi window on both (rooted s3) and play drag racing and watch a movie so if that's not multi tasking idk what is lol iOS has the power to do true multi tasking its just apple is scared of change and have the fear of failure. The battle between apple and Samsung and iOS and android is like the battles between ford and Chevy and Toyota and Nissan and Honda lol all the something everyone had there preferences and likes n needs

This is the biggest thing, ever. Scrolling up/down a web-page in Android is just miserable, and Android users are so used to it they don't even seem to care! So laggy, along with the screen rotation which you often have to wait for what feels like ages for the phone to do (S3 and Galaxy Nexus experience here).

Honestly, if the Android experience were as smooth as the iOS experience, I might consider switching. (I likely wouldn't switch, but at least it would be a consideration).
I fully agree. It's all down to lack of proper hardware acceleration. Because the vendors are too lazy to sit down and actually try to optimise it, it will never get better. I also find it fairly amusing that my old iPhone 3G can scroll and pan much smoother than a "modern" Android phone. (Sure, it takes longer to load it, but at least I get 30fps+)

Android users think their experience is smooth because they've either never used iOS (Or even Windows Phone to be fair, that's actually an excellent OS), or they're in total denial and blinded by their own unjust hate for Apple.

Just remember, Fandroiods, you'd be nothing without Apple

watching a video, sending a text, surfing the web and playing a game at the same time? I see why you want a bigger screen!!!!!!

Amazing

And this is coming from a long time iPhone loyalist!

Apple please don't release an iPhone 5S

We want innovation not iteration !

Apple's "S" revisions are historically hardware bumps, not design changes. This bodes well for a newer, faster CPU/GPU upgrade for the 5S. Even in cases that were not "S" revisions (the move from the "new iPad" to the iPad 4), they doubled the CPU performance from one generation to the next.

----------

Damn.

Gotta give credit to Samsung.

They said it was fast and they delivered.

You're easily entertained. :)

----------

I couldn't agree more. I really feel that the next iPhone needs to be a game changer. iOS needs to be totally revamped, it has been the same since release and I feel it is starting to feel old.

I would move to Android but there is no way I am giving up that integration between my iPad, iPhone and Mac. Photo-stream is enough for me to stay in the Apple eco system. I still see no reason to upgrade my iPhone 4 though.

What does that mean "the same since release"?

We need clarification here.

----------

Totally correct. I had every iPhone since version 1. I jumped ship just to get a bigger screen. I bought an Nexus 4 and after using it for roughly a month I couldn't be happier.

If that's your main qualification for a phone, I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

It might feel and look old but it still works perfectly. I fail to understand this never ending need for something "new".

For some, "newer" is "better" by definition.

----------

Man, that phone is more powerful than my Core2 Duo ThinkPad!

But for what? Do you really need that much power to play Angry Birds?

One of the things Apple is good at is when they show a new, faster processor or GPU, they show a new killer app alongside of it that SHOWs you what you get for the money. I'm thinking of the "Infinity Blade" series. Every time Apple showed off newer procs/GPUs, they had Epic come out and show off a new "Infinity Blade" iteration that took advantage of the horsepower.

Samsung needs that focus.

----------

The beauty of this is how much the A7 and new ImgTec GPGPU combined will stomp on the S4, on paper, and especially in the real world.

What do we know about the A7?

----------

That's what she said.

I'm going to start doing it this way:

"That"

- she

----------

sigh... switching to Samsung on my next phone....

yeah Apple... where is the innovation? getting tired of overpriced iteration...

Wait? Where was the innovation in the Samsung announcement?

Offensive, sexist, racist, tone-deaf they got right.

Maybe I missed the innovation in that.

It's funny watching people defend the iphone. It's like watching a parent of a criminal defend their kid. Everyone knows the kid should be locked up but mom will swear he's a good kid caught up in circumstance.

Let me know when the iphone gets:

- Larger screen
- Faster performance
- More ram
- Better camera
- a back button
- removable battery
- sd card slot
- swipe typing
- A damn file system
- Multiple browsers
- LED notification light
- can install any mp3 as ring tone
- widgets
- a real notification bar
- multitasking

Ugh. Tired of typing. The list can go on forever.

Your list of "must-haves" reminds me of old debates in the 90's from Windows-diehards who laid out these Windows features that the Mac didn't have, and that Apple MUST adopt in order to get them to switch.

It was pointless then, and it's just as pointless now. If Windows/Android does what you want, why demand that Apple become Windows/Android to "get you to switch? It's an outlier buyer in the smartphone market, not the majority.

Noone intentionally designs and markets to the outlier buyer.

This is impressive hardware....BUT

With how poorly coded Android OS is, you need monster hardware just to have a decent user experience. Android phones have these monster CPU/GPU's and still stutter when scrolling and they devour batteries. The iPhone 5 gets by for days on a 1430mAH battery while Android devices with 2100mAH batteries cannot even make it through 10 hour work day.

The battle is not about power anymore; those days are over. Today, it's all about simplicity and beauty - whether the device can be played by your little ones.

Clearly, iphone is still ahead.

Absolutely insane. That's about as powerful as the Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro I'm typing this on and still use as my daily driver.

I wonder if smartphones specs will start to become irrelevant. If I can still use this computer nearly 5 years after it is released and it meets my needs, how long will I be able to keep my next smartphone for?

I went three minutes into it, and the lag I saw had more to do with it pausing for a second while it loaded up graphics and information from the internet, rather than the processor having to chew through an overly bloated OS.

I've seen similar happen on my iDevices. It's something you barely notice unless you're looking for it.

If this is the horrible lag everyone is talking about around here, then the whole issue is greatly overblown.

No it's earlier than that (55-60 second mark) You'll notice it in the app/widget drawer - but as you say it could be it just loading widgets into memory.

It is noticeable albeit barely, though I didn't say it was a big deal by any means - just that it is there. ;-)

But to say it's very laggy or riddled with lag is certainly over-egging it.. you are right it's not that big a deal, but at same token theres no point denying these little lag stutters. It would be nice to see as phones like this get super powerful these mini lag stutters however insignificant would be gone completely.

Ditto on that Derek. The first thought I had when I saw this was "more complaints from my Android carrying friends about battery life!"
Personally I would love it if Android was truly an awesome competitor to the iPhone because it would force Apple to pick up the pace a bit on their end. But iPhone haters can say what they want about this feature or that feature missing from the iPhone, but for the most part it's all about the current limits of the technology and how adding this or that will affect the overall experience. In this case with the S4, it's all about the battery life, which I'm sure will royally suck compared to my (preferably) smaller and lower powered iPhone 5. :apple:

Why are you using Android
I'm a geek
Man, I hate those things. Work makes us use those when we want to experience bloat ware
What?
They make you get viruses and have bloatware like crazy.

Maybe you are just a wannabe ?

What?!?! The note 2 lasted me about 2 days on a single charge depending on how I used it and my s3 lasted me all day. My iPhone 5 at one point didn't last me a full day I have to charge it by noon sometimes and then after I restored it got better battery life but I am still on the charger by 5pm depending on the days use. Idk why apple fanboys can't take Criticism. There's flaws in iOS just admit it and the other day I asked Siri where's the nearest verizon store and it gave me a location 51 miles from and it wasn't even the right place. Android is not poorly writing look at a s3 or Htc one x+ or a note 2 with pure android and I can bet that you will have a different opinion. Stock android 4.2.2 jellybean on the s3 note 2 and others are smoother then iOS and way more snappier and speedy

I'll be the first to create the best app for this new phone:

A Coffee warmer for the Samsung Galaxy S4.

I think I can make it with three lines of code to create an endless loop with a complex calculation, to put all 4 cores to work.

In version 2 I'll allow a slider control to adjust the temperature, which would adjust the complexity of the calculation accordingly.

In version 3 I'll add a temperature reader and automatic shut off once it reaches the desired temperature.

In version 4 I'll add a battery saving mode: The OFF button.

I'm going to be rich! :D

Anyone would like to join this Kickstarter Project?

Android is a far less optimised system, it needs the faster CPU to give the same fluid user experience that iOS gives. Don't read too much in to it folks.

Moronic posts like this are the reason Apple fans are hated. So many have their head so far up their own and Apple's backside they can see the sun.

If it needs twice the CPU power to be as fluid as iOS, then it wouldn't be scoring almost double in tests would it?

So why did the S3 perform better as well them? Oh wait must have been a fluke.

The iPhone was good 6 months ago, now it's falling to the bottom. Only fools delude themselves otherwise. Samsung have shown what can be done in terms of hardware. It's time for Apple to step up. Stop the girly slapping from Phil and give the consumers something at least on par with the S4

Granted. Though this is nearly twice as fast! That is impressive.

Not sure what your definition of optimised is.... I would like it to be less optimised and catch up-to 2013.... Something made in 2007 is gonna scream on current hardware ;)

That's goes both ways. There is a lot of denial out there by both camps .

Goes both ways. It's clear that there are people here who have never used Android and/or have spent less than 5 seconds with it yet talk as if they are experts. "Blinded by their own unjust hate for Android/Google/Samsung"

And I think you have your last comment wrong. First - I'm not into name calling. But I think you mean to say that Android and/or Samsung would be nothing without Apple (which I disagree with anyway).

How can "fans" of a platform be nothing without Apple. Silly agrressive comment. As if what OS someone uses defines them, completes them or is all someone really is.

All these silly comments here really made me laugh.

The S4 is the better phone... Accept it and move on
