I disagree on "nothing too exciting when ti comes to hardware these days.." My non-partisan view is one of amazement at what has been accomplished in terms of technology miniaturization of mobile phones. This is where Apple has the clear lead -- a leadership driven by special-purpose silicon.

On your second part, "it will come down to software, performance, ..." I agree. But I disagree that Apple has a serious lead on all fronts, as Google is far from laying still, and they have demonstrable software skills, some unmatched by Apple.

.

That's a fair point. It's still amazing what we have in our hands, but I just don't see general consumers getting too excited about the majority of hardware features. Google definitely has some software skills, but I still feel Apple have set themselves up better for the future. Google is playing catch up in a lot of ways by trying to establish more control over their ecosystem. If they can do this though, they'll slowly chip away, but Apple won't be standing still either.

Smart Phones have gone from enhancing your life to having the latest gimmick.

The disruption the iPhone 2g introduced is just not there anymore. The Apple Watch certainly has not done it, neither the HomePod.

They just have to put the three in a triangle foation, with a big circle glass over it to look like a single lens. people will love it.

Apple: We are going to put 135 lenses on our next iPhone
Samsung: We are going to put 136 lenses on our next Galaxy.
You're giving Samsung too much credit. This rumor is only a response to the 3 lens iPhone rumor from a month ago. Samsung doesn't take any chances when they can have Apple do the marketing research for them.

Why is this article on this website? Does the author also post on Samsungrumors.com and misspost?

This site is constantly posting out of context articles. Either change the site name and ethos or stop with these articles.

I couldn't give a crap about Samsung, I don't buy their phones and have no interest. If I did I'd go to a Samsung site.
How about starting your own website and save us the belly aching?:p:D It is after all, MacRumors: News and Rumors You Care About. That "You" is the generalized you, not the rodpascoe you. ;) I'd safely bet this thread will end in the 7+ range of pages of comments. That's a lot of "You" that have an interest. Just not so much you.

I think the triple-lens camera is maximum and the dual-lens camera is ideal. When you look at what Pixel 2XL can do with just a single-lens and great software, you instantly know that the software is the MOBILE photography future. People that are using mobile phone as their main camera doesn't care about the hardware, they just want nice photos.
The only problem is that Google's single lens approach doesn't allow for realtime portrait mode. Maybe faster processing will help address this in the future but for now, hardware does make a difference to some.

Really? Your take on this article is that Samsung is purposefully copying Apple? Could it be the natural progression of smartphone technology is a 3-lens system?

Kudos to Samsung for being able to engineer, build and release a new phone is a reasonable amount of time. By the time Apple releases something, it's old news. Maybe Apple should "hurry up".
Samsung's "innovations" never work quite right. That's what happens when you rush garbage to market. Ever use a Note 4's answer to TouchID?

Have you seen AR Emoji?

Samsung is not a “credible competitor” to Apple.

They don’t even have their own OS, AppStore, programming languages, SDK, WWDC, Apple Music, computers and their own OS to make everything, their own CPU cores, GPU cores, vídeo encoders/decoders, etc. etc. etc.

They make phones, but so does Xiaomi.
How about the following:
Samsung computers?
Samsung laptops
Samsung OS
Samsung is still working on Tizen phones
Samsung SDK
Samsung SDK (Tizen)
Samsung Developer Conference
Samsung SDC
Samsung App Store
Samsung Galaxy App Store
GPUs, well not yet but there is this form June 2018 :
Why would Samsung want its own GPUs?
Nothing on CPU or video encoders/decoders however the point is even though some of the areas listed may not be Apple level, you are incorrect on certain aspects of your post.

However you are right on this: Samsung is not a credible competitor to Apple.
Apple doesn't build ships.
And since you didn't limit your comment to mobile, ships is fair game.

But... those three will be far superior to Samsung's 15 or 20 lenses.

As a keen photographer I know that cheap lenses can ruin an image. The quality of images taken using top quality glass are noticeably better than with cheaper lenses. I've done a lot of testing in the past on this very matter.

A bunch of haters.
Notify me when Apple will do something similar to this. Oh, I forgot Apple doesn't develop it's only camera sensors and camera hardware in general like Samsung does.

i find it funny how everytime theres a apple rumor going around of a future product samsung hurries up and tries to built it first.
You do know Huawei did it first and it's them Samsung is copying, right?

Don't overlook the fact that the competition already has a three camera phone out called Huawei P20 Pro. And, if it wasn't for Samsung popularizing the phablet iPhones would still be stuck on 3.5".

Stop with all this logic and facts

I'm just pointing out cameras in phones have recently gotten good enough to really start to move the needle in the photo world. They aren't DSLRs, but they are getting close. Why people resist this like "3 cameras is too many" just baffles me. They will make it flow with the design, just like they did with 2.

I counter with the slowing pace of megapixels. We saw rapid increase of megapixel count in cell cameras then suddenly stabilized to 12-20mp. Why? Because it’s about quality not numbers.

About 4yrs ahí a small tech firm was creating and trialing a smartphone camera that (under glass outer lens) used an oil with electrical current passed through it to change the surface tension. Making the tiny film oil to curve much like the human eye for a clearer and sharper Zoom over digital zoom. I cannot recall the company or what happened to development but I feel this is a better way to go along with more dense pixels and larger processor for better quality photos and videos over just adding another camera.

Another reason to fight 3 cameras on the rear? Li-ion battery life and current technology and space in iPhones. Too little capacity for me.

I really want someone to leak that the next iPhone will have a Swiss Army Knife built in, and then see Samsung release a phone with a Swiss Army Knife built in, as Apple laugh at them.
Or you could do a little bit of research before you post a stupid comment so that we don't have to laugh at you.

Then by that stretch it could post absolutely anything whatsoever then? So why call it Macrumors then?

I've been a member of this website for 12 years and it used to be just what the title suggested. Now it's trying to compete for ad revenue along with the likes of Engadget. Such a shame.

Is that a paid member or just somebody who created an account?
What alternative method do you suggest for them to pay their bills?

In any regard, Apple expanded beyond computers.
Macrumors needed to do the same to stay relevant.
Macrumors doesn’t have the luxury to live in the past like some posters do here.

Nothing stopping you from creating your own site and posting articles that you deem relevant.

Of course Samsung is going too. As soon as Apple lets or leaks the news on 3 cameras, Samsung will do it. lol. Copy where they will.

Am I wrong?

Anyway, pictures these days are at least half the result of the software and image processing, in which Apple trounces Samsung. Portrait mode has been copied by Android manufacturers, as one example. Samsung’s color accuracy is garbage and over saturated in almost all cases.

Apple isn’t a hardware company. They spec hardware out but don’t build a lot of it because hardware manufacturing is a crap, competitive, low margin business. Remember, Apple’s Samsung screen was better than Samsung’s Samsung screen, so they know what they are doing.

Ad absurdum is not a valid tool for discourse.

I'm guessing it's called MacRumors because it primarily traffics in Apple related content. Sounds as if you're looking for exclusively traffics in Apple related content. Thankfully, MR isn't that insular. Might I suggest skipping over content that doesn't meet your definition of what should be on the site. They have plenty of Apple focused content. The majority of it is, in fact, Apple focused.

MR, Apple, and the entire tech industry are different from what they were 12, 8, heck even 4 years ago. They've all adapted to current times. Every site needs revenue to operate. Trying to drive it isn't some sort of activity worthy of derision.

Again, you could always start your own 24-7, all Apple-all the time site.

Disagree completely. Smart phones have evolved greatly over years. In respect to the article, look how smart phone cameras have almost eliminated point and shoot and cameras. Its incredible the detailed photography smart phone cameras can produce.

The disruption the iPhone 2g introduced is just not there anymore. The Apple Watch certainly has not done it, neither the HomePod.

In fairness, the Apple Watch is the _best_ selling smart watch in the world. The HomePod is still in its infancy to determine how successful it is yet, being its only been available for six months.
