I see it more like Apple removing the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 - to give consumers a whole year to vent so that the controversy would be out of the way by the time the iPhone X was released the following year.

Samsung is possibly using their mid end phones to telegraph to users their intention of (eventually) removing the headphone jack. I wonder though - if and when Samsung does remove the jack from their S and Note lines, what's their rationale and selling point going to be?
i do agree to some extent that headphone jack would hit the dust bin at some point for every company. but when we don't know.

samsung is coming out with tons of technology,

this along will make s10 sell like hot cakes, i'm still on my iphone 7 since i dont like the idea to have to pick up the phone off desk everytime i want to unlock it.

I still don't understand how people STILL don't have wireless headphones of any kind by now... It's basically 2019 ffs
because airpod cost 150+ and they are easy to lose and expensive to replace. while headphones are 10 bucks.

I have had an iPhone 7 for over two years now, and I still think it was asinine to remove the headphone jack in favor of the Lightning connector.

At least Samsung is using a standard port - USB-C, so one adapter (or one pair of earphones) would work with any other standards based device. Apple is now eliminating the Lightning port in favor of USB-C, so now you have to have three different ways to connect headphones to a device in the Apple ecosystem. This is just dumb and sloppy.

Lightning was a transitional connector. Everyone knew it. The standard is USB-C. Apple should have waited with removing the headphone jack until they fully transition to the standards based connector on their iPhones and iPads.

the usb-c dongles are really trashy. and they lag

It’s 2018 almost 2019, who still uses 100yr old tech, headphone jack what? It’s all wireless baby. Ohh and the people who do are a minority out of the entire global smartphone industry.

What does being almost 2019 have to do with anything? ... or 100 yr-old tech? In other news, my car still has tires, too.

What matters is what works and what the rest of the audio industry is using. Wireless is fine for convenience, but when something is important, it's wired all the way. Unfortunately, a Lightning connector isn't as robust as a good-ol' 3.5mm jack.

I knew macrumors editors were waiting for this day since samsumg first mocked Apple. Very predictable.

Come on people, this is not Samsung copying Apple. It’s Samsung copying the Pixel for removing the headphone jack. And moving the front facing camera hole from the center to the side is innovation you know.

Haha at the 180 by Samsung. They look more foolish now because they were so emphatic about the headphone jack.

While I’m no fan of the notch, I think it’s better than a hole that’s off centre. I think it’s more noticeable and distracting where they placed it.

Not only is this phone a major regression in aesthetics (I actually thought the S8 was rather fetching), but it looks like a cheap Chinese COPY of the Xs Max.
Gross.

It’s ugly. Is Samsung copying Honor or the other way around?

The FCC is strongly pushing cell phone manufacturers into unlocking the FM chip that is within nearly every cell phone for emergency information in the case of natural disasters when cell service is overloaded or out of service, but a radio station might still be on the air with life saving news.

What people are missing about this is that this gives Apple and now Samsung and others an excuse to say, "Mr. FCC Chairman, we cannot enable the free FM radio. As you can see there is no headphone jack/antenna line anymore." Tim Cook himself has been caught lying about the FM chip several times and even caught by the NAB in tests of iPhones to prove him wrong to the FCC.

Obviously, the cell phone manufacturers are beholden to the carriers who do not want this FREE feature and Apple obviously sells music and doesn't want free music available.

I believe there should be a anti-trust investigation of several companies for this. Maybe the rest of the world doesn't see this as a big deal, but Americans are used to free over the air TV and AM/FM radio and more people are turning back to over the air TV of late, the so called cord-cutters. This would be the equivalent of all of the TV manufacturers only making TVs that only get Pay channels.

And finally, the question begs. What will happen when Next Generation TV that is being tested on cell phone equipment now rolls out? In America, it will also be FREE TV on a cell phone with no data charges. Will the cell phone manufacturers and carriers prevent it on their phones too? Once again, Apple has a conflict of interest in this matter too.

Samsung actually started having a Chinese ODM to make phones for them and label Samsung on the phone (this is real, not hating). The first phone from that is the Galaxy A6s. So don’t be surprised when more and more future Samsung phones looking alike the Chinese phones.

Looks pretty nice aside from the "drain plug" front camera.
Thank goodness it still has a fingerprint sensor instead of Apple's half-baked FaceID.

Sadly, too late to return my XS Max. I've had every iPhone model and the X-series has been the absolute worst in terms of progressive improvement. Such a step backwards. SMDH.

Apple didn’t remove the headphone jack in favour of lightning. They’ve been using lightning since the iPhone 5 while keeping the headphone jack until the iPhone 7, four years later.

I have a 7 Plus, wanna trade? ;)

To those who don't know anything outside of the Apple ecosystem, this Samsung phone is called the A8s and it is a MID RANGE DEVICE. And for a mid range device this thing looks good. It's also most likely an Asia only phone, or more specifically, China. The Galaxy S10/S10+/Note 10 on the other hand will be the world's first OLED displays with the Infinity O display (the A8s is LCD.) And like others have already mentioned, the headphone jack is said to be still around on the flagships. It's gonna be treated as a premium feature. So if the A8s looks this good as a mid range phone, God help every other OEM in 2019. Galaxy S10/S10+/Note10...Greatness Is Coming!

What do you think? Who bone crushingly dominates display tech and dictates the direction of displays in the mobile space? Who actually develops and uses their own displays and who buys displays from supplier? What company just had the display tech stolen and sold to Chinese OEMs? SMH at the lack of intellectual curiosity.

A hole for a wrist loop instead of a cam would have been a cool move.

Just design- and coolness-wise. Not that anybody uses wrist loops...

Guys, the headphone jack is going the way of the dodo, like it or not. Forget about the argument that the jack is old tech, there's just too much $$ to be had from selling privately badged, wireless headphones to ignore, the success of AirPods being the best example to date. I think it's likely Samsung removed the headphone jack because it probably has what it thinks to be a good set of bluetooth buds to sell with them. That and, well, smaller chin without it :)

Who is buying headphones with any connector?
Not many people now I would imagine. I still have a set i use on flights but I’ve gone wireless for exercise etc and they connect just fine to my watch, phone, iPad, Mac even my tv.
