I guess I’m the only that thinks this direction could mean the end of Apple as we know it within a couple of years.

I don’t think people realize the absolute inevitability that within a couple of years the better phone will be the one with the better capable AI.
A good AI vs an “average” AI is an exponential difference, it would be like choosing the black and white phone vs the one with the color screen.

For AI to work really well you need data, and Apple to me appears as it’s lagging a lot on the matter. It’s astounding how impossibly stupid my Siri assistant is vs ANY of the free versions of AI.

If Apple really is this behind in AI…I mean, there’s virtually nothing else that will meaningfully differentiate products.

This is coming from someone that would prefer to still pay for iPhone / iOS rather than having android for free.
It is not that Apple does not have user data. After ATT, only Apple has the user data and it has prohibited others from having the data. Unfortunately, Apple does not have the chops to get any useful out of all the data that it has exclusive access to. Apple should step up.

Unless Apple has been doing something AI focused very, very secretly for years that nobody has heard of, there's not a chance in the world the "new AI Siri" will be even remotely comparable to what will be available in competing products.

For a good AI you need:
1) Tons of user Data.
2) Years of development.
3) The best R&D.

We do know that the leading scientists in the world work for competitors, but let's assume they still have a top level AI R&D team. We do not know if they've been working at it for years with the same effort that we do know it competitors have done, but let's assume yes.
What we do know is that:
1) Apple's focus on privacy is exactly what makes it impossible for them, today, to use the data you need.
2) The most likely scenario is that Apple is also 1-2 years minimum behind, and not with the top minds.

Unless there's something big that was kept secret, if Siri looks dumb today in respect to its "a bit less dumb" competitors, in 2-3 years time it will be like comparing a monkey to a top level team of personal assistants.
Are you suggesting that others, such as Google, are able to collect more data from Apple devices than Apple does? Do you know that several European governments have filed suits against Apple because it is misusing ATT by denying other companies' data while using the same data to benefit its Ad revenues?

It’s not that Apple don’t care . Apple knows people are gonna flock to there new devices regardless so why not shaft the customers 🤓😬👦🤷🏽
Much as I hate to admit it, I am beginning to feel that Apple does milk its customers to an extent which is becoming tedious. Samsung have a much broader range of products and can probably afford to discount their products more, but Apple makes us pay for their futures and the futures are not looking that good to me. Am I getting disenchanted with Apple, you bet your life I am.

I loved the company that challenged the norms and did things different (ly). Now they are like the rest. Vision Pro is an interesting product and may change the way we view content but it is a lonely world with those goggles and the thought that my wife and I would need a pair each to share anything is somewhat mind boggling. In the end the Vision Pro is probably going to be a niche product.

I digress, this is about the new Samsung S24 series phones and they are cost effect and the cost to upgrade is significantly cheaper than Apple's offerings plus the phones are very competitive functionally. I will probably upgrade my S23 Ultra which acts as a 2nd phone, for $650 who wouldn't?

I got my iPhone 15 Pro Max on launch day, and after seeing Samsung's presentation... damn! I really hope that Apple will catch up to this (talking about the AI features), or it could be the first time ever that I could turn my back to iPhones. I've been an Apple fan since I can think (well, almost) and I have a full Apple ecosystem, but here Apple is falling behind. And the earliest they can catch up is in 8 months. Which is eons in this world.

S23 ultra was already increble now it's super smart. as an overall phone could say it's the best out there. very much software related but alot of the upgrades are under the hood.

SD Gen 3 with a new cooling chamber is massive for heat or lack there of.

Apple is so far behind now on AI features its a joke, unless they've been secretly working behind the scenes on something significantly better for a while it's going to take them a while to catch up as they are years behind.
it's said it will come in IOS 18

So, let's sum it up. S24/24+ design goes 1 to 1 with the iPhones. The titanium chasys on S24 Ultra copies the material used on 15 Pro Models. Flat Screens, live stickers, "Samsung" Care+, optional Portrait Mode after the photo is taken... Heck, they've even downgraded their optical zoom to 5x just to match that on 15PM. How much more pathetic they can be?
This is one of the most petty string I've read in a long while.
Let's use the same logic, we get the following: Apple copied OLED displays from Samsung, Apple copied big phones from Samsung, Apple copied wireless charging from Samsung, Apple copied 4K video recording from Samsung (first available on Note 3), Apple copied the 48MP camera from Samsung, apple copied 5X Zoom camera form Samsung (because Samsung launched it first will the Note 20 Ultra) etc.

Now this is quite a ridiculous list, woudn't you say?

The counterpoint is that all the AI features I am seeing so far frankly seem like a joke and seem to be there just so the manufacturer can slap “AI” on the packaging.

The video my whostheboss sums it up. Many of those features don’t even seem to work right on S24. They are gimmicks that do not result in any meaningful improvement to the end user experience.

Meanwhile, iOS features like crash detection have been credited with saving lives, and Apple doesn’t even need to use the term “AI” to hype them up. That to me is real innovation.

I wish all of them were rounder. The S24 even though it's rounded off seems off, like it's a rounded rectangle where you can clearly distinguish were it starts rounding off, there's a sharp cutoff. It looks less friendly than the iPhones. But I love how consistent they've been with design regardless. The frame on the S24/+ looks great.

i wonder if they improved the rendering of the 100x zoom.. from some videos it kinda looks the same.

First off, what is AI even? If by AI, you mean LLMs or generative AI, I still feel that is a problem in need of a design solution. It doesn't matter how good the AI service is if the manner in which we interact and engage with it is awkward and cumbersome.

I think that throwing cold water on the whole chatGPT craze and poking holes in what appears to be unguarded optimism will prove to an astute move moving forward.

I wonder how much of the AI processing is done locally and how much is done on the cloud? Will that require a subscription in the future? It'll be expensive to offer...

These phones look terrible as expected.

Nothing of interest.
Look terrible? They look like screens in cases once in a case, like every other phone in the world. 👀

Or do you mean their specs look terrible? That doesn't make sense either as they are clearly not budget crap, with more impressive camera tech than Apple offers.

(And no, I've never owned a Samsung phone and don't plan to at these prices)

I’m not enthused by the AI features, and the new camera features read like last year’s. I’m sure waiting for a proper, fully functional AI assistent along the lines of Her.

LOL god, that’s Apple marketing in full force.

Where’s your data to back that up?
