Waiting for Apple to release their folding phone, so we can progress from "nobody needs a folding phone" to "my folding iPhone is great" stage of acceptance on this forum.
Apple isn't going to release a foldable phone. They're ugly, create a thicker brick to put in your pocket and the seam on the screen is ugly.

Say it with me: foldable phones are a solution in search of a problem.

😄 then Samsung is on track.

Well yeah, i loved a lot with the Fold 2 I had for a while but in general I prefer Apple for the software and ecosystem side of it. But to use it was a very good thing since it meant I would have my small tablet with me everywhere for reading and whatnot. It is also nice that the small tablet would have a good screen unlike my iPad mini.

I might be tempted to try to go all in with Android and get rid of my Mac as well as iPads, iPhone and Apple Watch to replace them with Android products. Previously I haven’t gone all in which makes me miss the interconnectivity between devices but if I switch everything it might work better.

I like it and would buy if 1) Price was lower 2) LumaFusion would actually release for Android.

Prices are rising everywhere and a folding phone will kill off the need for a phone and a tablet.

Still Android OS is no iOS but as long as LumaFusion runs as good as it does on M1 & iPad I am all in.

this mat finish actually looks great but I need to see it in person.

Edit: apparently the marketing material is deceiving, it is still glossy
The back glass is matte, but the sides look semi glossy (not as glossy as a stainless-steel iPhone pro though). The fold 3 is all matte however (the side rails as well as the back glass).

Just preordered the Fold 4 but yeah I definitely like the Apple ecosystem integration. Kinda disappointing that Samsung discontinued Dex on Mac but I’m trying out Microsoft Edge for some browser integration across devices. For file transfer stuff I’ll just stick with OneDrive or Google Drive since Apple won’t release an Android client.

Otherwise with an iPhone 12 Pro Max I didn’t see a strong reason to wait for the 14. Next iPhone I buy will probably be the 15 if it has USB C.

Well just submitted my order, decided on the white with gold frame. I may eventually get a Fold, but I just love the small form factor of the Flip. It's just a treat to use.
So after trading in my Flip 3....

Just like the Surface Series, which are a compromised experience as a laptop and a tablet, these flip phones are a poor phone replacement (thicker than existing phones) and a poor tablet replacement (an unsightly hinge/ fold, not a useful size).

I’m not sure what problem they’re trying to fix. It’s like Samsung just says “here’s a solution” without knowing what they’re trying to fix.

Meanwhile, IPhone 14 will have a smaller notch.
Kind of feel that iPhones are getting obsolete before they even go to market.

Just like with the Mac to a degree they lean heavily on the exclusive software.

I wonder about the longevity of these. One of Apple’s main things is a support program that will fix your device easily. They are probably waiting for the tech to mature just like they always do.

And that’s why people are holding on to their older iPhones longer. They are not fooled these days. Apple has been selling pretty much the same phone since 2017. The fact that there are over 240 million iPhones ripe for an upgrade and they are not budging is concerning. Think about those on 11, 12, 13 in the coming years. They are not gonna be rushing out to get 15, 16 and 17.

I keep my phone for 2-3 cycles. Not because the design is old, but because they last that long with great performance and the spec bump isn’t substantial enough to warrant it. I do the same with almost everything I own, which I often keep longer.

I’m not interested in substantial design changes year on year. The car has been pretty much the same for the last 15yrs. 4 wheels, a number of seats, an exterior to keep you dry and some storage space. Bicycles…2 wheels, some gears, handle bars and a seat….hardly changed in design for years but still receiving iterative updates. TV’s - flat screen, all glass in varying sizes for years.

How much more innovative can a phone become when I believe we’ve already hit the peak functional design? Literally everything you do is on the front screen, and it’s now all screen. What design changes do people possibly want? Other than moving to a completely new format, such as augmented reality glasses, there’s not much wriggle room to make a phone that much better than iterative updates. And when we do get that substantial format change, you can bet your ass people will be upgrading every year again as those first few years are formative for sealing the peak design and function.

Anyone have any thoughts on the thickness of a folded phone? Seems like it would be a bit brick like.

I think it's great that Samsung are pushing the development envelope.

Sometimes I wish Apple had more courage in this department.

Samsung are closing the gap [Galaxy Watch 5] with the Apple Watch. So the competition is good.
Apple can’t and wouldn’t risk launching a device with a screen that will break or suffer any number of issues the soft glass-ish folding screens suffer from, especially in the hands of the average (or below) consumer. Apple has been testing folding screen devices at least as long as Samsung has and knows, as does Samsung, that they can’t get past the issues a folding screen faces for volume implementation.

Imagine for a second just how many calls for Apple to be investigated there would be, for launching a product that they knew wouldn’t survive normal life. And even if you simply say that the screen and its issues are what they are, there is the bigger point of what exactly does the folding screen phone do that is worth the tradeoffs it has including extra thickness, cost, and certainly in the case of the larger version, an awkward usability for anyone with normal or smaller hands?

It is definitely a negative when wearing certain pants, I am not a jeans guy but even with chinos I’d feel it being a bit bulky in the pocket. But it still beats putting a 8” tablet in your pocket without folding it.

Do you ever have something positive or constructive to say? Every post of yours in negative. Maybe Apple is not the company for you.

It basically comes down to Samsung’s folding phones vs Apple’s rumoured AR glasses. As such, I wouldn’t view the lack of a folding phone as Apple lacking in innovation or “courage”. Apple is simply betting on a different horse (wearables) vs Samsung opting to double down on smartphones (both because they have invested so much in flexible screens, and because they see their wearables foray not really going anywhere).

At the end of the day, it seems that Apple faces more competition from their older products than from other companies. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I can't believe people are complaining about creases and "not seeing the need" - we are living in a time with folding freaking screens and we just shrug it off.
Yes, overpriced folding screens that I’m more than happy to continue shrugging off.

Yep, Innovation these days is "Size of Apple's Bank Account" - "Apple Marketing Spend". Not much else.
Ironically, they’re spending more on R&D than ever before, to the tune of $25 BILLION this year. That’s more than 10x what Steve Jobs was spending when he gave us OS X, iPhone, iPad, iMac, iPod, iTunes, Apple TV, Garageband, iCloud, A series processors, unibody aluminum MacBook, MB Air, MagSafe, Siri, Mac mini, glass trackpad, retina displays, etc., etc.
