That’s _not_ common sense from someone owning an iPhone 6, then upgrading to the XS, not when they can purchase the XR, which would be a middle ground phone. I doubt an iPhone 6 owner would opt straight to the most expensive iPhone, not when the XR exists for a cheaper price point that offers similar functionality and capabilities.

Why not? The 6 was the top of the line phone at the time and after 3 or 4 years use I think it’s common to get the next top of the line phone.

Apple is not going to make a foldable phone in near future. If they do I will eat my shoes.

Laptops, it will be foldable laptops, and if it isn't I'll eat your shoes.

Probably starting with the MacBook as it's a random product without a real USP at the moment and seems best size to start on with it's smaller screen, and near iPad level thickness.

I think the foldable technology could be used elsewhere than a phone. Maybe like on the watch where you actually can use a bigger screen, or the iPad Pro where you can use it as a regular tablet, but if you have a use for it... just unfold it and use the bigger screen.

To be fair, back in 2011 people were thinking of smartphones more like cellphones like BlackBerries. No one imaged people will ditch their computers and tablets and use their cellphone for work and play. Today there are people who literally make their living off their smartphones.

Think of people like Instagram celebrities and snapchat-ers

Going to be great to see this forum when Apple reveals its expensive as f*ck folding phone.

Expensive it will be, but they are more than welcome since they have the only good tablet-UI.

Not this year but 2020 is feasible, it will depend on whether Samsung can offer one for the price of the iPhone XIS Plus or not. Seeing how Apple's phone prices are going up and this foldable gen 1 "only" costing like 50% more we will likely see a foldable phone for the price of the plus pretty soon.

Don't forget that Android Q is rumoured to be supporting folding devices out of the box.

I don't know about the rest of the people, but I do know that if I want a large screen device, I'd buy a tablet. If I want a smaller device, I'd buy an iPhone. A phone should be a device you can hold and use with one hand. A phone should fit in your pocket without becoming a bulge or heavy weight.

A foldable phone isn't necessarily a bad idea, but it would increase thickness significantly due to the need for a larger battery. It would be heavier because it requires more components (ie: 6 cameras instead of the already many 3-4 cameras on a single phone). The phone would no longer be a one handed only device because when you unfold it, you can't use it with 1 hand. When you text, you can't use two thumbs to type anymore unless you fold it back up. And if you fold it back up, you're better off with any android or iPhone today.

Do you see the point? If you're folding it back up to use it like most phones today, you don't need a foldable phone. If you want a large screen, you'd buy a tablet. So why would I want a heavier and thicker device for the sake of flexibility? Why would I want to pay the price of an iPad Pro for a phone that folds?

I guess only if you need that portability, but I feel the trade off for portability at the cost of a significant price hike, heavier weight, more components to fail, increased thickness is not worth it.

If I was Apple, I'd invest in refining MiniLED tech and getting back into the monitor game instead as others have mentioned. Hell, I would love to buy an updated Apple wireless router. I missed the old days when their ecosystem packed a much tighter game. They should focus on refresh their existing products and services that have gone stale rather than following this fad. It will be like 3D TV. Yeah, long forgotten.

Still not believing in phablets that’s why I have a tablet, but that foldable thingy... I like that a lot!

Now fix the software, hardware and other issue that will arise in the next 3 years. Then make one that looks and feels premium, then reduce de price a little because it is a small table, then I’ll buy that.

Easy as that don’t you think?

“The most expensive, hum, we weant most best, most coolest iPhone XSF Pro Plus 2020. It starts with 64 gb for $1999. Now that’s an amazing price for an amazing device.”

My guess is that foldable displays are not the real future in the long run. Rollable displays are, like the rollable OLED TV LG has shown at CES.
It is a much more practical solution, you don’t need hinges. (Very) simply put, imagine a regular iPhone XS Max with the stainless steel frame on the right being retractable, so if you pull the right side of the frame, it expands and a piece of extra screen rolls out and fills the bigger frame on the right at the same time.
Much cleaner solution, which could even have 3 modes: standard regular iphone 21:9 mode , 16:9 mode (iphone 5 to 8) and 4:3 (iPad ) mode.
This is much more a solution apple could choose instead of having a curved screen on the outside that could be damaged or a big grease in the screen because you fold it inwards. LG have shown such thing this is possible with a big OLED TV, and it looks very clean and like a finished product without the bubbly plastic effect , folds, etc.

Rollable I can see working in large television displays perfectly.. It would help with shipping and delivery. That’s where I think this type of technology is heading on the consumer side. Foldable displays on phones is just a stupid all around idea.

Can you reduce app window to arbitrary size (or just to 1/4 screen)? Other OSes have been able to do it for more than 30 years now.

The apps are designed so you can - for example, if you run it on Mac via marZipan then you can arbitrarily size the windows and the code already in the apps makes everything work. The iOS running on iPad only allows ½ ¼ ¾ and full size because it doesn’t allow overlapping windows (other than slide over). That’s a user interface choice to allow only tiled windows. Of course that’s not unique to iOS. But that may or may not change in the future, and of course that’s a separate issue than the original claim that somehow you had to rewrite apps just because of new screen sizes. If the screen size changes and your app is written using constraints, auto layout, or traits, there is no need to rewrite as long as the screen SHAPE doesn’t change (in other words they don’t add new notches etc).

Going forward, though, if your code uses the “safe areas” in your constraints, then even new screen shapes (new notches and holes, etc) should be fine.

In the past, before Autolayout, you did have to address each screen size manually. It was a giant pain. But that was a long time ago. Now your apps should work on any size screen and dynamically adjust when screen size or window size changes.

Guess they don’t want average consumers purchasing their products anymore.

Yeah a foldable iPhone at the courageous price of $2500. F-that.
Every new technology is expensive. When the 4K TVs went on sale the price tag was minimum 4000$. Now, just 2-3 years later you have one for below 400$. Before the end of next year you will have foldable phones for far below 1000$. Patient.

Turn it down Apple!!

I would so love to hear Steve Jobs' thoughts on foldable screens!
Most likely he would have asked his engineers why Apple does not have a foldable iPad Pro you can put in your back pocket.

This dictionary fails to grasp the meaning of innovation.

Innovation comes from economic theory and the result has always been important to innovation. The end result of innovation has to have some meaningful positive impact on a process, the economics of a company, the effect on society or similar to count as an innovation.
[doublepost=1551610461][/doublepost]illi

So, can you provide how much revenue companies generated from VR-gaming in 2018?
I would be surprised if the world wide revenue was more than a few billion dollars.

Innovation predates the the corresponding economic theory by thousands of years. It doesn’t “come from” it.

Now that you bring it up, I wonder what became of that uproar. We have heard nothing since then. Did all iPads magically stop bending all of a sudden? If it was a genuine problem, I would imagine we would have heard more about this issue by now.

I called it back then. More clickbait news by news outlets eager for clicks and ad revenue.
apple probably dealt with it internally, but it did stop me having interest in upgrading my 12.9 now that i know it has the iphone 6 syndrome.

Anecdotally speaking, my mom sat on my ipad today by accident and it’s none the worse for wear. It’s certainly not folding in half if I so much as look at it wrong, as what some critics here make it sound...

If 5G implemented on a wide scale, the wireless device needs will change significantly. One example, no matter where you are the Apple Watch could attach to your systems. Very little need to carry a phone, tablet, or laptop around all the time. Why have a seperate home system when you could interact with a panel that presents your data no matter were the data resides.

How we interact also changing and will greatly accelerate once the network can handle the data seamlessly from home to car to work.

Constrained by the network and thus we lug around various deceives to accomplish today’s tasks. 5G has the potential in the very near future to upend the wireless industry.

How? Apple and other companies will be doing foldable screens, that’s the future.
Beg pardon?

Because a phone that unfolds into a tablet is valuable to me. I know some people are dismissing it, but to me it’s innovative. Some things just need to be fine-tuned and improved.
So, skepticism about a foldable phone can’t possibly exist without being blindly loyal to Apple, Inc. No logical, rational criticisms could possibly exist without a pro-Apple bias. That is, of course, what you are saying. That’s called a “tell.” Have fun back in the android forums.

I went from a 6+ to XS Max. The XR, to me, is the equivalent of the 5c in the current lineup. It doesn't make sense to me, to go with the lowest version of the current lineup.

How come no one is talking about the bend life of these things. I question the longevity of these screens. How many bends can they do before starting the degrade.

Also Apple already brought out a folding ipad. It’s called the iPad Pro. Quicker and cheaper than Samsung.

Agree. So many moving parts can mean many more failures. I can see this more in a laptop/tablet form before an iphone.

But, it is exciting to see where this type of technology can go. Kudos to Samsung for getting it going.

glad to hear ur ipad survived but it depends on how much ur mom weight, how much force she exerted onto the couch, and how soft is the couch cushions :D

Next time I'm tempted to read through one of these long reader comment threads, I'll just go watch Monty Python's Argument Sketch. #getalife
