Oh the irony!
I don’t see any irony unless you mean it in the Alannis Morissette sense.

How come no one is talking about the bend life of these things. I question the longevity of these screens. How many bends can they do before starting the degrade.

Also Apple already brought out a folding ipad. It’s called the iPad Pro. Quicker and cheaper than Samsung.

I bet you’re the first person to think of that joke and post it on this thread! We should check...

Regardless on how you see this? My personal thought is this going to be a flop like 3D TV. Cool to test once!
This is a feature no one wants, so drop it dead

“I don’t even care about folding displays. Give me a phone as thin as a strand of hair I’ll be happy.”

-Jony Ive

So a laptop is a more portable desktop computer. A tablet is a more portable laptop. A folding phone is a more portable tablet + a phone. Why is there so much negativity towards the idea?

Wasn't there a similar level of doubt over larger "phablet" phones, tablets and wearables?

I personally sold my ipad and use my plus iphone exclusively as I didnt have the need for two expensive devices when 80% of the time I was using the iphone like a tablet. If an iPhone could fold out into an ipad then I would purchase 100%.

Agreed as long as in tablet mode there aren’t serious compromises. Must be big enough size and support pencil. And in iPhone mode must be small enough to be comfortably carried, so no bigger that max sized more or less. Seems unlikely that a folding device can do all that, but I’m open to be proven wrong.

Let’s assume for a moment that the display can stand a sufficient number of folds to last minimum 2 years (avg phone contract length), which yet has to be proven.

What about the display touch feel? In order to be foldable, the display needs to be flexible, i.e. a foldable display won’t have the rigid glass feel to the touch, but something more wobbly, plasticky feel (this is also how the pictures of the pioneer devices look like).

Not sure I’d like this ...

People seem to say it fees pretty nice, but I am also looking forward to more reviews when it gets out into regular peoples’ hands

Aah, now it all makes sense!

So the bendie iPad pro they've been shipping is just a beta test for the foldable iPad! They just wanted to see how much **** we'd tolerate in a bendy screen. Now they know, it's gotta be less than the bendie pad. Nice work Tim Cook!

Lol, wow... you are really, really, really ill-informed on the way tech is manufactured. Like, embarrassingly so.

Do you seriously think Samsung has no component suppliers?????!
You think they manufacture every bit of their products themselves?
You think they don’t pay millions to Hynix for example? How about Qualcomm? Toshiba?
Where does it end?? Do you imagine they smelt all their own ore?
*facepalm*
To put it in perspective for you- Samsung has a program called “Smart Factory support”, where they help some of their smaller/less sophisticated suppliers update their factories to better be able to handle Samsung’s volume of orders. In 2017, four hundred and eighty seven of their suppliers’ factories used this program. I believe by now that number is over a thousand.

Apple does WAY more custom in-house than Samsung does... designing their own chips (1st cpu, then gpu, now neural... not to mention the t-series & w-series, or the rumored in-house baseband chips). When they created these products, they erased HUGE payments for using tech from PowerVR, Imagination, ARM, and others. It’s looking like they may be able to create their own 5g chips soon & even desktop processors (eliminating reliance on Intel or Qualcomm).
When a company creates a new way to do something & no longer has to pay someone else to do it for them... I believe that’s called: what’s the word? Oh yeah, INNOVATION. Apple’s got a strong recent history in that area, w/ rumors pointing to acceleration, not deceleration.

Yeah... so while Apple does purchase screens from Samsung, that has precisely zero to do with whether they can or cannot innovate. For example: The XR screen was custom designed by Apple, w/ zero input from Samsung... they just sent them the specs & ordered some built.

As their largest single customer- Samsung needs to “sale” (sic) screens to Apple, so they can actually make money.. you know, without “sueing” (sic) companies for allegedly “viloating” (sic) their patents.

Further, I think when you pay market price to a supplier for a product that they would like to sell you... that’s not being “hooked up” by them.
I don’t say: “wow, Texaco really hooked me up w/ some gas- all I had to do is drive down there and pay the price listed on the sign... what a hook up!”, or “man did I ever get hooked up w/ food at the grocery store.... I went in & paid them the prices listed on the shelves; bet you wish you had a hook up like that, right?”.

TLDR;
everything that you said was wrong
hello there lord beerus, lol
I will cut it short, I will start right at where you end

everything I said was wrong , yeah ok, maybe because you have a different point of view
and the idea that apple needs help from Samsung to be relevant in todays market
it doesn't fit inside your head, with all due respect, that is called living on denial
me I'm the opposite, I accept then truth, because I am realistic
I'm not blind by fanaticism, the truth is the truth but some time for some people the truth hurts

you are mixing 2 different things, but let me ask you , who made the OLE screens for apple?????

no more questions for the witness your honor
:D

it really depend how you want to see things
I can twist your texaco analogy around real good but I honestly don't have time for that right now
I don't have to convince you, but every coin has 2 sides
there is always another side of the story or another person with a different point of view

but you are free to believe what ever you like or interpreter things your way
nothing wrong with that

that is the difference between your brain and mine
how they process data in a different way

apple doesn't innovate anymore that is the painful truth
there is no point on denying what is obvious

we can continue this some other time

cheers

I’m sure Apple is looking at all options. They’ve missed or have been slow to board the boat on popular trends like large display phones and 2 in 1 touch screen laptops. They’re rarely first to market, but they can’t ignore new technologies like flexible screens especially as it has potential wearable applications.

Ooh I get it! I wonder if anyone else has made that joke yet.

this is the # 1 problem with apple, as much as people don't want to hear it or they simply don't want to admit it

no innovation

apple should get new personal with new fresh ideas and stop milking the cow
eventually the cow is going to run out of milk or they will end up with out a cow
because they sucked the poor cow dry

making an fordable iphone will be just like coping someone else idea, it doesn't matter how good that phone will be
it doesn't matter if you make it better because you copied the idea, be original or at least made some changes

we already have bendable iPhones and iPads, now we need fordable ones
:D

while you at it, see if you can also do something with the watch
prepare yourself, apple is going the fordable route with all their devices

something new

yeah right, something new for apple costumers but they stole, sorry copied the idea from samsung

just in case I'm not a samsung fan, I'm an android hater
but I'm realistic

mr cook thinks the ship is a submarine and he is going to drown everybody
he is taking the ship to the bottom of the sea and everyone on board with him

:)

Foldable phones are akin to curved tvs.

Totally two different segments. A TV, more specifically a curved 3-D TV, is a stationary device, and consumers generally don’t update TV’s on an annual basis. In the mobile market, smart phones have much more of a dominant play, because we are constantly on the ‘go’, and the ability to able to enlarge and truncate a device with a foldable display, has far more appeal than a 3-D TV. The Only thing a foldable display and curved TV share, as they are price exorbitantly, but the fact that a foldable display has the ability to be more mainstream once the technology matures over the course of time.

Yes. If there is one thing that defines apple it is lack of innovation.

It’s not like they changed the world with Mac, iPod, iTunes, or iPhone, after all. And even those uninnovative things were all released one after another in rapid succession, within a period of just a few years.

Of course, I may be misremembering all this...

Believe it when I see it. Apple has a history of not releasing any hybrid devices. And a folding phone is exactly that.
In theory this is very nice. Practically, I've many doubts phones are a good application for folding screens.
Same goes for transparent screens often seen in science fiction movies. Nice for certains applications but not handheld devices...

Foldable phones are akin to curved tvs.
There have been curved phones as well... just sayin'... they also were a huge success...

Well I have just replaced the broken screen on a 5S because nothing that Apple currently sells interests me, they are all too big and I will NOT be buying them.

Anything that folds or bends has mechanical stress points, stress points eventually break. Of course Apple will be happy with a phone that dies every 3 years, consumers won't be.

Why not just get an SE? It’ll last you a few years longer, it has the same specs as the 6s
